The Colorado statewide ballot
will be a long one this November.
Besides the contentious presidential race, voters will decide on a US
senate seat, local state legislators
and district attorneys. Numerous
initiatives will take up the balance of ballot space. Statewide
issues include Initiative 101 which
would raise the minimum wage of
workers, Initiative 143 designed
to increase cigarette taxes for
tobacco education and cessation
programs and Proposition 106
allowing terminally ill patients to
end their lives with the assistance of a doctor. Perhaps the most
interesting of all these questions
is Amendment 69, an initiative to
provide universal health care to all
Coloradans.
Championing Amendment
69 is Colorado State Senator, Dr.
Irene Aguilar. Dr. Aguilar has
always been concerned with the
nexus between health and public
policy, a primary reason she ran
for the state legislature in the first
place. As an inner-city Chicago kid,
the first in her family to graduate

Denver Broncos Von Miller gives back
Eye and hearing health are one
of the two healthcare services that
are often overlooked. It is easy to forget that the eyes and ears are a basic
need. According to Brien Holden
Vision Institute 625 million people
are unnecessarily blind or visually
impaired because of lack of examinations or a pair of glasses. The Center
for Hearing and Communication
Clerissa Salazar
reports that 48 million Americans
have significant hearing loss and
only 16 percent of physicians screen for hearing loss.
The best way to combat these numbers is to take action
and control of your health. Von Miller has stepped up to the
issue and has started a back-to-school vision day for children
as they start school. The event was held on August 13 and
over 150 children were given free eye exams, screenings,
and corrective eye wear if they needed it. For the Back to
School Vision Day the Von Miller Foundation partnered with
multiple optometrists and retailers to help provide children
with what they needed. The Back to School Vision Day­­is a
once a year program.
Von’s Vision Day however, has two parts. The foundation partners with multiple and regional eyewear retailers
and then it provided a citywide vision day for underprivileged children in the community. Each child that attends
Vision Day receives a free screen and if the child needs
it, they are then provided free eye exams and corrective
eye wear. The experience does not end there though, after
everything has been done, Miller holds a Reveal Party where
the children are then fitted for their glasses and they are
personally delivered by Miller.

The program started in 2014 when only Von’s Vision
Day was available, now The Von Miller Foundation has
nearly tripled. “Most of these kids are told they are dumb
and that they cannot learn. But it’s a vision problem. There’s
no access to healthcare. “ said a Von Miller Foundation
representative.
The Von Miller Foundation has been one of the major
movements in eye care for children who need it and they do
not see it as a small issue. The foundation wants to continue
to grow and help as many children as possible. The founda-
tion is trying to add a year-long program into their services.
Every year since 2014 there has been a new program added
in order to help children. The new program will be called
Von’s Vision Year Long and is set to open in late 2016 or
early 2017.
The Von Miller Foundation all started because Von
Miller was a child who required eye care, because of that
he knows what it is like not to have eyewear. Low income
children can go through their entire school career and never
get the chance to get their vision tested. “ To watch them
prove people wrong is an amazing thing. To see the wow
moments, it’s an impactful thing. Once the kids get their
glasses their grades skyrocket. They get to prove people
wrong,” a representative said. Every child who goes to any of
the vision centers receives a chance to change their life. The
foundation has helped 1,750 so far and is continuing to grow.
The Von Miller Foundation will make it even easier
for children to receive the help they need. One of the most
amazing things about this foundation is with just a little
help a child can turn their grades and their entire world
around.
It is very easy to overlook eye care. Most of us take it for
granted, but there are ways to receive healthcare and make
it affordable. People like Von Miller help provide access to
great vision for kids who need it.

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has partnered
with Richmond International Raceway (RIR) for the second
year in a row to promote greater access and awareness to
VA benefits and services at NASCAR weekend. In addition

The Obama administration is now acknowledging its controversial transfer of $1.7 billion to Iran earlier
this year was made entirely in cash, using non-U.S. currency.
Treasury Department spokeswoman Dawn Selak said in a
statement late Tuesday that the cash payments were “necessary” because of the “effectiveness of U.S. and international
sanctions,” which isolated Iran from the international finance
system. An initial $400 million cash transfer was sent to
Tehran Jan. 17, the same day Iran agreed to release four
American prisoners. Congressional officials told the Wall
Street Journal that the remaining $1.3 billion was paid in two
more installments delivered on Jan. 22 and Feb. 5.

IRS urges withholding check-up
The Internal Revenue Service today encouraged taxpayers to consider a mid-year tax-withholding checkup
following several new factors that could affect their refunds
in 2017. Taking a closer look at the taxes being withheld
can help ensure the right amount is withheld, either for tax
refund purposes or to avoid an unexpected tax bill next year.
The withholding review takes on even more importance this
year given a new tax law change that requires the IRS to
hold refunds a few weeks for some early filers in 2017 claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Additional Child
Tax Credit. In addition, the IRS and state tax administrators continue to strengthen identity theft and refund fraud
protections, which means some tax returns could again face
additional review time next year to protect against fraud.

Emily Griffith Technical College
celebrates 100 years
On September 9, 1916, Emily Griffith, an elementary
school teacher with a vision, opened the doors to a place
of learning for those who had no other, and she named it
Opportunity School. The Opportunity School was the first
of its kind in the nation, providing free adult education.
Educators from around the world visited the school, hoping
to replicate this unique model of educating adults. During
World War I, the school helped train soldiers in radio communication. In the years of World War II, the school operated
Mayor Michael B. Hancock and the
Denver Public Library Commission honored four Latino
leaders at the annual awards ceremony on Sept 10. Award
recipients were Colorado residents of Latino descent who
have made major contributions to the Latino community.

Obamacare, a bridge from human to civil right
When Bernie Sanders advocates
for a single payer health insurance
system he is advancing the issue
as part of a civil right agenda for
America. He does so because health
care for the people of this country
has reached a crossroad that will
determine whether everyone in this
country can enjoy guaranteed medical insurance and care regardless of
their (economic) status in life.

One of the major reasons that
there is and has been a history of resistance to medical
coverage for everyone is that it has not been seen as a right.
Sure, there is a human right dimension to this issue, but
many feel that this has been addressed through the use, or
more likely, the misuse of our hospital emergency rooms.
Also, when we think of civil rights, we conjure up the
images of minority groups that want social, economic and
political treatment that has only been largely available to the
majority community. It is because of this context that our
political establishment refuses to fully recognize the priority
of medical care for all.
The United States has never really come to grips
with class issues like we see in Europe and the rest of the
Americas. We fancy ourselves to be a society of individuals
where hard work can lead us up the socio-economic ladder
or that we can be just as effective citizens standing where
we are.
Strangely enough, Obamacare comes from that kind of
thinking, but is opposed by many that would support it only
if President Obama had not proposed it. As a matter of fact,
that is the form of initiatives that have had more success in
past Republican and Democratic administrations.
The notion of medical insurance for people was a product of the Industrial Revolution and was first raised right
before the American Civil War. It grew stronger as it became
one of the benefits newly organized labor Unions sought
from employers around the turn of the 20th Century.
The Roosevelt Administration first took on a universal
medical insurance initiative during the Great Depression
but it was denied largely because it was not the right time.
World War II made the issue even more difficult as the wage
and price control mechanism created to effectively fight the
war did not allow for free wage adjustments, but did allow for
benefits in lieu of more money.
President Truman tried to get an initiative passed
in 1945 but was bogged down by opposition from the U.S.
Chamber of Commerce, the American Hospital Association
and the American Medical Association. Also, the union
movement chose to stay with medical insurance as part of a
negotiated benefit package with employers.
President Johnson’s 1965 Great Society initiative introduced Medicare and Medicaid that were in part designed to
address the needs of the elderly poor. This was followed in
1970 with Senator Edward Kennedy’s single-payer proposal
and President Nixon public-private insurance program that
were not successful.
Led by the First Lady Hilary, the Clinton Administration
developed a universal health insurance system that again
went no-where. Obamacare passed during President
Obama’s first term has elements of ideas advanced by previous Democratic and Republican administrations particularly
in the area of participation by the private sector.
The single-payer system proposed by Bernie Sanders
represents the next and final step in a universal health
insurance system guaranteed by the government as a right
for everyone. This way, the notion of a civil right is extended
into another area of American life.

nuestro establecimiento político rehúsa reconocer la prioridad
del servicio médico para todos.
Los Estados Unidos nunca ha llegado a reconocer los
problemas de las clases como lo vemos en Europa y el resto
de América. Nosotros creemos que somos una sociedad de
individuos en la cual el trabajo duro nos sube a la escalera socioeconómico o que podemos ser ciudadanos tan efectivos estando
como estamos.
Como cosa rara, Obamacare viene de esa clase de pensamiento, pero es opuesto por muchos que los hubieran apoyado si el
presidente Obama no lo hubiera propuesto. En realidad, esta es
una forma de iniciativa que hubiera tenido más éxito en administraciones republicanas y demócratas del pasado.
La idea de un seguro médico para la gente fue un producto
de la Revolución Industrial y fue primero reconocida antes de la
Guerra Civil Estadounidense. Creció más fuerte cuando se convirtió en uno de los beneficios que la fuerza laboral organizada,
los sindicatos buscaron de sus empleadores al inicio del siglo 20.

Dr. Licona makes health care history

Dr. Virgilio Licona was a Chicano activist and a health
care professional that focused on giving back to his community. The documentary “A Product of the Chicano Movement”
focuses on Licona’s contributions to the community health
center movement from the early 1970s to the present. The
documentary, however, is not a typical documentary as it was
also made with the intent to be remembered and studied.
“The whole point was that this piece was not going to
just be a documentary, but it was going to be a documentary
in the sense that we were going to do modules, that we were
also going to include a curriculum and study guides that
teachers can use in the classroom.”
The individual in charge of creating the study guide for
“A Product of the Chicano Movement” was Antonio Esquibel,
emeritus professor of Spanish, Metropolitan State College of
Denver and a well-known Chicano activist who stood alongside Corky Gonzales during Colorado’s Chicano movement.
“We tried to put together a video that would be directed
towards several audiences,” Esquibel said. “One of them is
students that want to get into the medical field and the other
is for people who are interested in the Chicano movement.

to do with this project: encourage minority students to go
into health care, not only in lower level positions, but to
become nurse practitioners, doctors, whatever that may be.

away before film was finished, Licona’s story is documented
through a series of interviews and in-depth research that
Vigil and numerous collaborators carried out.
“We were very fortunate to be able to capture his story
and his story is nice because his story is told by him,” Vigil
said. “It’s sad that he left us so young. He cared. He was the
kind of person that walked the walk and talked the talk.”
Vigil added that an additional effect of the documentary
is to allow Dr. Licona’s legacy to continue despite of his passing in March of this year.
“He really cared about his community,” Vigil said. “When
I look at the whole piece, I have to admit it’s quite inspiring
and I think that not to share it with the youth of today would
be a loss.”

Carolina giftwraps Denver’s first win
Last week kicked off the first
week of the 2016 NFL regular season.
Denver hosted country music’s Dierks
Bentley and pop band One Republic
from Colorado Springs for a pre-game
concert on Thursday night before the
Broncos took to the field to face last
year’s, Super Bowl contender, the
Carolina Panthers. A lot of hype in the
previous weeks leading up to Thursday
night’s game had critics adamant that

Denver would likely lose the rematch
without the likes of Peyton Manning, Danny Travathen and
Malik Jackson all of whom are no longer with the Broncos.
It appeared throughout the game that critics were right,
as the Broncos turned the ball over three times, two of which
came by interceptions from the young Trevor Siemian. Carolina
led most of the game scoring in the first quarter after causing
a fumble on running back Devontae Booker’s carry. Denver got
the ball back and with Siemian at the helm, marched down the
field to the Panther’s 32 (the same location where the previous turnover took place) before trying to toss a pass over the
Panthers’ tackle who tipped the ball up for Panthers’ linebacker
Star Lotulelei who intercepted. Denver had given up the ball
twice in their first two possessions before making their third
attempt the final charm. The Broncos got on the board with
a 28-yard trot into the end zone by Denver’s fullback Andy
Janovich.
The Carolina Panthers extended their lead by 10 with a
17-7 lead heading into the locker-room at the half. Carolina’s
quarterback Cam Newton was nearly perfect in the first half eating up yardage on Denver’s-not-so dominant defense, looking like
Carolina had finally figured out how to beat one of the stingiest
defenses in NFL history. Denver’s defense had other things in
mind, like being more aggressive, much more aggressive. So
aggressive in fact, that the game was the most talked about
sporting event until Sunday when the rest of the League started
their first week’s match-ups. Many believe that Denver was
much too aggressive with the hits on Carolina’s quarterback
Newton, who took shot after shot after shot. Newton was hit so
often by Denver’s linebackers in the second half that Carolina
fans and critics were screaming foul the entire second half.
Carolina’s offensive line managed to keep Super Bowl MVP
Von Miller in check with double and triple team coverage at
times, although that seemed to free up openings to Newton, for
Demarcus Ware who had 2.5 sacks on Cam for the night.
By the end of the night Newton was battered and bruised
and the young gun-slinger Trevor Siemian with the help of running back C.J. Anderson brought the Denver Broncos back for
the lead 21 - 20. It was now Newton’s opportunity to march his
team to victory which seemed inevitable with a call on Chris
Harris Jr. for illegal hands to face keeping Carolina’s hopes
alive. Newton led his team to Denver’s 32-yard line and lined
up for the game-winning field goal. Coach Gary Kubiak, iced
Graham Gano who bounced his first attempt off the uprights
which went in, but did not count. Gano and the Panthers lined
up again with added confidence and shanked the kick to the left,
missing the goal posts by nearly ten yards, sealing their fate and
handing the win to Denver. Denver is now 1 - 0 heading into
their matchup with the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

2016 Prius, the clear fuel economy winner!

strength steel and provides 60 percent greater torsional
rigidity. With this platform, the Prius also gets a multilink
rear suspension, which is heavier than the previous torsion
beam and provides more favorable suspension, for better
handling. This heavier suspension, along with the relocation of the hybrid battery from the trunk area to below the
rear seat, probably accounts for most of the center-of-gravity
reduction.
Passenger volume is smaller than before, but interior
seating was extremely comfortable for our 5-hour drive to
Taos, New Mex. Trunk space has grown from 22 to 25 cubic
feet—and even more in some versions. Inside, the 2016
Prius retains the traditional central instrument cluster, but
the dashboard now sweeps into the doors and has a prominent central display with separate HVAC controls.
With Prius, the emphasis is on efficiency, achieved
with its high-tech powertrain. This new model employs
an upgraded version of the outgoing car’s Atkinson-cycle
engine, with the addition of a cooled exhaust-gas-recirculation system, and faster combustion due to intake ports that
increase tumble in the combustion chambers. Power is down
from 98 to 95 horsepower, while the torque peak of 105 lb-ft
is maintained, but developed slightly lower at 3600 rpm. The
2016 Prius pretty much surpassed our expectations going
over La Veta pass at a comfortable speed of 70 miles per hour
with plenty to spare.
On the electrical side, the motor has been downsized,
cutting its output from 80 to 71 horsepower and its torque
from 153 to 120 lb-ft. But it’s also physically smaller and
lighter, and the engine’s output is limited by the power that
the battery can deliver, so there’s no effective loss of power. .
The 2016 Prius is the clear winnner on the road when
it comes to fuel economy, and while the official figures are
not yet out, Toyota is projecting that the ratings will come
in at 54 mpg city and 50 on the highway, increases of 3
mpg (city) and 2 mpg (highway) over the current car. With
weight essentially unchanged and only a small aerodynamic
improvement the drag coefficient drops from 0.25 to 0.24
this is a useful improvement. We could not believe the distance achieved by a sole tank of gas!
On the road, the car feels very solid quieter than last
year’s model. You can hustle along very quickly on a winding
road with far more confidence than the old Prius.
It all adds up to a 2016 Prius that looks and feels like
the car of an environmentally-conscious consumer. As other
automobile manufactureres work on steadily improving fuel
economy, the 2016 Prius retains its position and is far ahead
of that game as the most fuel-efficient car for this driver.
Los autos híbridos en general, y el 2016 Toyota Prius en
particular, se ha convertido en una parte tan íntima del escenario Estadounidense de autos que es fácil olvidar que el Prius

Y sin embargo desde 1997, Toyota ha producido más de
5 millones de estos modelos del Prius en todo el mundo. Aquí

Esta impresión de estar cerca al pavimento es más que
cosmético, porque el nuevo modelo tiene una pulgada menos
en el centro de gravedad, gracias a la nueva plataforma TNGA
(Toyota New Global Architecture) , que usa más acero
de alta tensión y provee un 60 por ciento más de rigidez. Con
esta plataforma, el Prius también tiene una suspensión trasera

El volumen del pasajero es menor que antes, pero los
asientos del interior fue extremadamente cómodo para nuestro
viaje de 5-horas a Taos, New Mexico. El espacio de la cajuela ha
crecido de 22 a 25 pies cúbicos—y aún más en unas versiones.
Adentro, el 2016 Prius mantiene el conjunto central tradicional,
pero el tablero de instrumentos ahora llega hasta las puertas

La fuerza ha bajado de 98 a 95 caballos, mientras se mantiene
el torque pico de 105 lb-ft, pero desarrollada un poco menos a
3600 rpm. El 2016 Prius sobrepasa bastante nuestra expectativa
al pasar el paso de La Veta a una velocidad cómoda de 70 millas
por hora y con bastante para superar.
En el lado eléctrico, el motor ha sido rebajado, recortando
la salida de 80 a 71 caballos de fuerza y su torque es de 153 a
120 lb-pie. Pero es también físicamente más pequeña y liviana,
y la fuerza del motor está siendo limitada por la fuerza que

necesita, se les ofrece examen gratis de los ojos y anteojos

en donde se ajustan los anteojos a los niños y son entregados personalmente por Von.
El programa comenzó en el 2014 cuando solamente el
día de Von’s Vision estaba disponible, ahora la Von Miller
Foundation se ha casi triplicado. “A la mayoría de estos
niños se les dice que son tontos y que no pueden aprender.
Pero es un problema de visión. No hay acceso a los servicios
médicos.“ dijo un representante de la Von Miller Foundation.
La Von Miller Foundation ha sido uno de los mecanismos más grandes en el cuidado de los ojos para los niños que

salud que frecuentemente se olvidan. Es fácil olvidar que
los ojos y los oídos son una necesidad básica. Según Brien
Holden Vision Institute 625 millones de persona quedan
ciegos o impedidos innecesariamente debido a la falta de
examines o un par de anteojos. El Center for Hearing and
Communication informa que 48 millones de americanos
tienen una pérdida significativa del oído y solamente el 16
per ciento de los médicos hacen exámenes del oído.
La mejor forma de combatir estos números en tomar las
riendas y controlar su salud. Von Miller se ha apersonado
del problema y ha comenzado un día de visión de vuelta a
la escuela cuando comienzan el año escolar. El evento fue
hecho el 13 de Agosto y más de 150 niños recibieron examines gratis de los ojos, y corrección si es que lo necesitaban.
