CHOP Shop/Dry Bones
Review
Thanks to all the teens who put their
time, energy, creativity, and passion into
making CHOP Shop happen!
Your
enthusiasm and dedication to make a
difference through prayer in not only our
church but our community is an example of
the life Jesus taught us to live. We have
been blessed, encouraged, and
challenged through you.
What a tiring but awesome week we
had doing CHOP Shop and Dry Bones!
For those who missed out, our Dry Bones
participants learned from Robbie
Goldman and his intern, Joanna, how to
love our community in easy, natural ways
without any gimmicks or money. Our
teens prayed over various locations in the
community of places of pain, violence, and
poverty, as well as traveled to places of
hope and celebrated those who help
people in our community such as our own
food bank volunteers. They also got to be
put in an unfamiliar place, an apartment
complex in Duncanville, and simply love
and hang out with kids of all ages from the
apartment. It was a joy to watch our
teenagers take in what started out to be
only three kids, and have so much fun with
them that soon there were around twenty
kids out there hanging out. And then the
next day they got to take those same kids
out to the movies for a treat and hang out
with them some more. Both our teenagers
and the apartment kids were blessed by
this. In addition, our teens got to practice
what they learned in the evenings at the
House of Prayer. Some served by praying
over others or by themselves. Others
served by leading an Art Room or running
the amazing Hebrews Coffee House. And
still others served by leading worship or
simply picking up trash to keep the building
clean.
If you missed out on this
experience, don’t next year! For those
who participated, how will you continue
what you learned after such a powerful
week and continue to serve and love this
church family and the community?

lunch (or you can bring your own)
and shaved ice.
Quiz Show was released in 1994 and
recalls the true story of the 1950's "21"
game show. Though the television show
was wildly successful, the movie depicts
the infamous scandal that brought the
game show to an
end. Specifically,
the movie depicts
the story of Charles
Van Doran, played
by Ralph Fiennes,
who is an up and
coming professor
and the son of
famous
poet/
scholar Mark Van
Doren who decides
to test his knowledge in the television
game show market. In order to boost
ratings, the producers of "21" offer Van
Doren supposedly secure information in
order to ensure his victory. When a former
contestant threatens to blow the whistle on
the game show for cheating, Charles Van
Doran has to decide where he stands in
his moral crisis.
What to watch for: The most glaring
dimension of the movie deals with morality:
How do we define it? How do we
implement it on a personal
level? Secondly, the movie has serious
questions each viewer must ask about
personal integrity. When we come to
conclusions in life regarding what is right
and what is wrong, how will we respond to
that knowledge...especially if that action
requires personal sacrifice and/or
punishment? Finally, the movie gives
keen insight in to the television industry
which, in my opinion, has had a
tremendous cultural impact upon everyone
in our country. The movie is a wonderful
watch for any avid movie viewer but also
serves as a superb parable about how to
live your life.
The movie is rated PG-13 for
language. Parents are encouraged to view
the movie for contents before letting
children watch.
Thursday: 5:00—11:00 pm

Brian Beck, our Worship

positivos.
Inscriba a sus hijos y
envuélvase con ellos en estas actividades
hasta donde sea posible y notara un
provecho favorable en sus hijos. Las
clases de entrenamiento dan inicio el
primer miércoles de septiembre. Si
tienen alguna pregunta pueden dirigir
sus preguntas a Jerry Gonzalez,
Priscilla Sotelo, o Mark Walle.
sigamos siempre adelante, recordando
que al final todo será mucho mejor que lo
que fue al principio. El día de la muerte
no es motivo de tristeza ni lamentaciones
por no haber creído en Dios. Todo lo
contrario, al final de nuestra jornada por
esta vida, nuestro final será mejor que su
principio. ¡Alabado sea el Señor por su
gracia!
~Joe Valenzuela
MIÉRCOLES DE SANDILLAS
Este miércoles habrá sandillas para
todos los que lleguen a estar entre
nosotros. Después de la clase bíblica
habrá suficientes sandillas para todos los
que estemos aquí. Las sandillas no son
para llevar, a menos que queden algunas
después del evento.

CARLON’S CORNER...
What a pleasant week of weather for
mid-July! I hope you’ve enjoyed it
because, well, it’s still July! But it will
cool down in August! Hopefully in
time for our Giant Back-to-SchoolGive-Away, August 15.
First
Baptist church is collecting and
distributing Duncanville ISD uniforms
the same day we do Back-to-School,
so please bring your clean used stuff
and put them in the container in the
foyer.
It’s going to be a great
day!...We had another wonderful
VBS, and thanks to Gus & Diana
Lomeli for great organization, great
volunteers, and a great experience
for our kids. We had visitors and first
-timers, and some kids who may
never get Jesus anywhere else. I
had fun, even though officials
shelved the snow cone machine…
Music Camp started Thursday and
picks back up tomorrow. There will
be a presentation on Saturday at
7:00 pm and an encore during the
Bible Class hour next Sunday. Adult
Classes can meet or dismiss, and all
Children’s Classes will meet in the
auditorium. We’ll start on time so be
in your seats and not disrupt the kids
on stage…“Streams,” a wonderful
week-end of worship, will be held at
the South MacArthur Church in
Irving on August 28 and 29. You can
register online or call 615—794—
8855. I’m going, and hope to see
you there…We’re going to have
fresh
cold
Cox
Farms
watermelons this Wednesday night
after Bible Classes. Stay and eat and
fellowship and drip juice all over
your shirt…As we prepare to launch
a large ESL program, we will need
additional Wednesday night teachers
and helpers. Please see Connie or
Jeff if you’re interested. We are
going to miss Pete & Amy Riley as
they head out on the next leg of
their PBT adventure. They have
been great servants here. A Going
Away party will be held today from
3:00—6:00 pm at the Walle’s
~Ron

SERVING TOGETHER
The VBS memory verse:
“Our Father which art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom
come. Thy will be done on earth,
as it is in heaven.”
Matthew 6:9-10
Wow! VBS was GREAT! We had
about 120 every night with some of
those being visitors! The skits were
good. One child said it was ONE OF
THE BEST VBS’s EVER!!! Good job,
Diana
and
Gustavo
Lomeli.
Thanks to all who participated in
one aspect or another! Ron and I
even led “Booster, Booster” on
Monday evening, but Mr. Jeff
rescued the audience by relieving us
of our Christian duties! Some of our
gifts have been “misplaced!” To
start off the evenings, the
registration tables were coordinated
by Tim & Marty Pinon with
assistance from Cari Fulfer , Jerry
Gonzalez, Sherri Robinson, and
David Vehon. The drama skits by
Amadeo Fonseca, Nathan Lowe,
and Chris Reno with help from
Ronnie Wright and Samantha
Anderson were very entertaining
and humorous, too! All the field
guides were “right on” every night.
They included Kristi Cockerham,
Bettie George, Rachel Houts,
Dianne McFerren, Mike &
Tammy Moehlman, Rick & Maria
Rivas, Mark & Stephanie Walle,
and a SQUAD of young adults.
C r a ft s w e r e l e d by Susan
Steverson with Pauline Dagen,
Perla Gonzalez, and Mary Kent
(who doubled as resident facepainter). Our game-masters were
Cindy Allen, Chris Reno, Benn
Richey, and Craig &
Julie
Slaughter. The much anticipated
snacks were passed out by Sharon
James, Brandi Olmstead, and
Tiffany Richey. The teachers who
worked on their lessons with
creativity and zest were Gene
Adams, Drew & Melinda
Bowman, and Priscilla Sotelo.
Nursery was seen after by Virginia
Anderson, Martha Conrad, and
Janie Stolz.
Here’s to a GREAT
success and we are looking to NEXT
YEAR!!!
Love you all, Ms. Connie
