YONKERS
August 15, the Solemnity of the Assumption of Our Lady,
is a Holy Day of Obligation. The Mass schedule for this
day is 9 a.m. (English) and 7 p.m. (Spanish).
“Jesus makes us feel truly alive”
It is not surprising when a tourist visiting Yonkers or America has
seen more places than we have. Or maybe it is us who, after some
time away, return to our home country or home town and visit sights
we had never seen when we lived there. We often only start to
appreciate “our things” when it is no longer just around the corner, or
when we have distanced ourselves from them.
Something similar happened to some of those who had known
Jesus and His family for years. Since they had shared years of His life,
it was hard for them to see Him as someone different and, as is the
case today, they could not understand what He was telling them. They
were used to seeing Him as “the son of Joseph,” just another neighbor,
and they could not see in Him what others could.
Last Sunday, on the Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, Jesus
made Himself known through a unique event. Today, He does so
through simple words: Jesus is the Bread of Life. In other words, Jesus
is the basic food in our lives. We all have certain basic necessities,
such as food, water, and a place to rest and find refuge. But these elements only allow us to survive. For our lives truly to have meaning,
we need more than a piece of bread or a roof under which to sleep.
And that “more” makes us feel alive, sustains us in difficult moments,
and helps us celebrate the joys in life, is our faith in Jesus.
Jesus is the bread of life not only in reference to the Communion
we receive on Sundays, but also because God, source of all life, makes
Himself present in our daily lives through Jesus. Maybe we think that
we will be happy if we have a lot of money, or are famous, or have a
fashionable car, or the latest computer available. But while all these
things might make us happy, they are like the manna in the desert, for
they do not truly give us life. Today’s Gospel reading reminds us not
to forget that it is Jesus who gives meaning to our lives and who truly
will make us feel alive, today and for eternity.
For reflection
What gives meaning to your life? Who has been the source of life and
support for you? What or who makes you happy? How does Jesus
support you in life? How can you help others so that they might truly
feel alive and happy?

The Zumba Toning Class will meet every Saturday in August from
1:00 pm to 2:30 pm. Classes are held in the Church Basement.
Fee: $5 per adult and $2 for youngsters from 12-15. Please bring

It’s Summer – As we enter summer and we think about
weekend picnics, trips to the beach and vacations, there are two
very important things we should keep in mind”
1. The summer is a time for vacations from work and school;
but it is not a time for vacation from church. We are called to
keep holy the Lord’s Day throughout the year, including the
summer months. Don’t forget about Sunday Mass.
2. During the hot weather, we should remember to dress,
appropriately for giving worship to God. Mass times while
traveling – Parishioners who are traveling may call 1 (800)
627-7846 (1-800-MASTIME) for the location and schedule of
Masses in Catholic Churches throughout the USA.

The Madrinas program is currently offering $1000
scholarships to help make tuition more affordable. Applications
are available for students to register now. The deadline to submit
an application is June 13, 2012. Non-Catholic students are eligible
for the scholarships.

RELIGIOUS ED REGISTRATIONS are currently being
accepted in the Parish Rectory. Please bring in your child’s birth and
baptismal certificates and the last school report card. The registration fee
is $70 and must be paid before September 1st. After September 1st the fee
will be $10 more per child. Registrations will be held Monday- Friday
from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m

NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
“Jesús nos hace sentir vivos de verdad”
Es posible que algún turista que esté en Yonkers o los EE.UU.
haya visitado lugares a los que nosotros mismos como residentes
nunca hemos ido. A lo mejor somos nosotros, cuando regresamos
después de algún tiempo para visitar nuestros países o ciudades de
origen, los que vamos a lugares que nunca habíamos visitado cuando
vivíamos allí. De alguna forma, empezamos a apreciar “lo nuestro”
cuando ya no lo tenemos a la vuelta de la esquina, o cuando nos
hemos distanciado un poco.
Algo parecido les pasaba a algunos de los que habían conocido a
Jesús y su familia durante años. Al haber compartido parte de su vida,
les costaba verlo como alguien diferente. Según las lecturas de hoy,
no podían entender lo que les decía. Se habían acostumbrado a verlo
como “el hijo de José”, como si fuese un vecino más del pueblo, y no
veían en Él lo que otros reconocían.
El domingo anterior, la fiesta de la Transfiguración del Señor,
Jesús se daba a conocer por medio de un evento único. Hoy se
manifiesta de nuevo por una frase sencilla: Jesús es el pan de vida.
Mejor dicho, Jesús es el alimento básico de nuestras vidas. Todos
tenemos algunas necesidades básicas como comer, beber y buscar
albergue y seguridad. Pero estos elementos sólo nos ayudan a
sobrevivir. Para que nuestras vidas tengan un verdadero propósito, se
necesita más que un trozo de pan o una cama donde dormir. Y ese
“más” que de verdad nos hace sentir vivos, que nos sustenta en los
momentos difíciles, y que nos ayuda a celebrar las alegrías de nuestras
vidas, es la fe en Jesucristo.
Jesús es el pan de vida no sólo en referencia a la comunión que
recibimos en cada Santa Misa, sino también porque Dios, fuente de
toda vida, se hace presente a diario en nuestras vidas a través de Jesús.
A lo mejor pensamos que estaremos felices con mucho dinero, o la
fama, o el auto de moda, o el último modelo de computadora. Pero
mientras que esas cosas nos brindan una alegría superficial, son como
el maná del desierto, que no dan vida auténtica. El Evangelio de hoy
nos insta recordar que solo Jesucristo nos da propósito a la vida, quien
de verdad nos hará sentir vivos de verdad, hoy y siempre.
Para la reflexión
¿Que cosas dan sentido a su vida? ¿Cuales personas han sido para
usted fuentes de apoyo y vida? ¿Qué o quién le hace sentirse feliz?
¿Como sustenta Jesús su vida? ¿Cómo puede ayudar a otros para que
se sientan verdaderamente vivos y contentos?

Las Inscripciones de Educación Religiosa ya están abiertas en la
Rectoría. Necesitan traer las actas de nacimientos y de bautismo y
las últimas notas de la escuela, al igual que el costo de la
inscripción que es de $70 por estudiante. Hay que pagar la cuota
antes del primero de septiembre, 2012. Después de esta fecha, se
aumentará la cuota a $10 por cada niño/a. El horario de inscripción
es de lunes a viernes desde la 10 a.m. hasta las 6p.m. y los sábados
de 10a.m- 4 p.m.
Cualquier Adulto con desee de recibir cualquier Sacramento que no
tenga como Bautismo, Primera Comunión, Confirmación, por
favor, no tenga vergüenza. Habrá una preparación especial para usted
y podrá recibir dignamente su Sacramento. Las clases en Español –

The farmer’s market at St. John’s Church in Getty Square is
open every Thursday from July until November from 8 a.m. to 4
p.m. Several farmers from upstate New York come every
Thursday and sell a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, baked pies,
cakes and seasonal plants. A flea market will also be featured with
vendors selling a variety of merchandise. Refreshments will be for
sale from early morning thru mid-afternoon. For more

St. Peter’s Food Pantry is open each Tuesday and Friday from
10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. We serve over 200 families each week.
We thank you for your help. The need has increased so
significantly that we want to continue serving those who depend so
much on the food that they receive each week. Summer Hours will
remain as Tuesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
