My dear parishioners, I write to you from Krakow, Poland. We are having a glorious time here. We left last Sunday, switching planes in Dublin, Ireland and arriving in Warsaw. We went to our hotel in Warsaw and after getting settled, our group went out for a traditional Polish meal. We then went with all the other pilgrims who arrived with us to celebrate Mass in the Church of All Saints in Warsaw. I had the honor of being the principal celebrant and there were eight other priests at the Mass. That night I met up with a priest friend of mine who ministers in Warsaw and he showed me around town and took me to dinner. The ladies in our group had dinner and then rested up for the next day’s journey. Tuesday, we took a long bus ride (almost 5 ½ hours total, with traffic) to Krakow. We had little time to settle in as we had to walk to Blonia Park for the opening Mass of World Youth Day. We joined up with other groups from the Diocese Brooklyn, marching under the American flag and our diocesan flag. In a roundabout way the group finally settled in our reserved section. Each registered group has assigned sections. I joined my fellow priests in concelebrating the Mass with the Cardinal Archbishop of Krakow, Stanislaw Dziwisz (the former secretary of St. John Paul II). The Mass was a superbly well done with an incredible choir. There were hundreds of bishops and thousands of priests and more people than the eye could see. The pilgrims have taken over the city. No cars are allowed in the city, the only vehicles permitted are public transportation and buses registered for the World Youth Day events. Citizens in the old city were informed it would best if they took vacation for this week. Being a New Yorker, it is mind-boggling how a Catholic event can take over a city for a week. It is beautiful to see the crowds of hundreds of thousands, walking the streets, carrying their national flags, singing songs, greeting one another. Events like these always remind me of that first Pentecost when people from different nations and languages all heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ spoken to them. I do not know if you can picture it, but it is something to see when there are groups from countries where the Catholic Church is under attack. There are pilgrims here from China, Pakistan, Bangladesh. They find ways to come here and celebrate their faith. There are pilgrims from France who are hurting from the recent terrorist attacks there, especially with the murder/martyrdom of the priest who was killed the same day we had the opening Mass. There are pilgrims from all the different states of the United States. There are so many Brazilians and others from Latin America. So many people from different places, speaking different languages, but we are all united in our love for Jesus Christ and His Church. Please pray that the faith set a fire here will continue to burn and burn strongly. God bless, Fr. — Be on guard against all greed, for your life does not consist of earthly possessions, but of the riches of the reign of God (Luke 12:13-21). Update on church boiler In the beginning of July, we began the work for our new church boiler. Asbestos removal took place first and just this week the demolition of the old boiler (about 58 years old) happened. The new lining for the chimney is coming soon and then we will have the installation of the new boiler. This is the first project we are doing for the parish portion of Generations of Faith. Annual Walking Pilgrimage Walking Pilgrimage and retreat: From August 10‐14 we will participate in a 4‐day walking pilgrimage from Great Meadows, NJ to Our Lady of Czestahowa Shrine in Doylestown, PA. Four days of walking, singing, camping, praising the Lord and growing closer to Him with the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. For more information contact Father Evans at the rectory. Did you know? The Parish had hardly been established 3 years when a parish school was considered a very essential part of the plant. It was a distinguishing characteristic of these German pioneer priests to establish a parish school almost simultaneously with the church. “They felt and knew that if they had the souls of the children, the salvation of the coming generations would be secure” (Diamond Jubilee Year Journal: 1854-1929). In 1858, acknowledgement for opening the first parochial school was given to the second pastor, Rev. Ignatius Goetz; the first school teachers considered taught language: 2 for English and 1 teacher for German. In addition to building the school, several additional lots were acquired and the first rectory was erected next to the Church. The need to procure efficient teachers was realized by the new pastor, Very Rev. Ignatius Zeller, V.F. In 1864, he invited the Sisters of St. Dominic, of the American Congregation of the Holy Cross, to establish a convent in Winfield and to take charge of the parish school. The convent was dedicated on September 12, 1869. These devoted women sacrificed their personal time and energy in teaching school, presiding at the organ and with the choir and unselfishly in all the various activities associated with the Church and School until June, 1989 when the administration and faculty of St. Mary’s School became totally staffed by competent laity.
