Registration for
2004-2005 Calendar Year
Classes will begin on Sunday,
September 19th for grades K-8.
Teachers are still needed for 1st Session,
8:45 to 9:45AM, for grades 4 & 5. Tuition fee is
waived for all teachers and volunteers.
For 2nd Grade Parents, there will be an
orientation meeting Tuesday, October 5th at 7PM
in the Lower Church Hall regarding Sacramental
Preparation for school and parish Sunday program
parents.
For Confirmation, 9th grade parent orientation is Sunday October 17th beginning with 5 pm
Mass followed by a meeting in lower church hall, 6
pm to 7 pm.
For Confirmation, 10th grade parents and
candidates meeting is on Sunday October 24th beginning with 5 pm Mass followed by a meeting in
lower church hall, 6 pm to 7 pm. (No need to reregister for 10th grade, if you were in the program
last year)

FAITH SHARING WEEKEND
On next weekend, September 26th, we will be honoring our catechist at the 10 am Mass, for their
important work of teaching the Catholic faith. It is
true that the parents are the primary religious educators of their children, parents also need some assistance by others in teaching the faith to children.

Mass and Healing Service
A Mass and Healing Service will be celebrated
here at St. John’s Parish by Father John MacInnis
on Thursday, September 30, 2004. The service will
begin with the Rosary at 6:45PM.. The service is
open to all, so please bring your family and friends.
This is a time when many are in need of healing,
not only physical healing but even more importantly spiritual, emotional and psychological healing. Let us open our hearts to the many graces and
blessings that God has in store for us!
God loves each of us deeply and is with us
as we bear our own cross, as well as help
to carry the burden of others. He brings
us courage, hope, wisdom and new life.

Generations of Faith: Liturgy stands at the Center of Life
Last week when I met with the family of the late Peter Torigian, an extraordinary man and mayor of Peabody for so many years, to offer them help with
the decisions they faced about the funeral, it was clear that they wanted to
celebrate a mass and receive communion for their beloved husband and father.
Even though he had been baptized in the Armenian Apostolic Church, Mayor
Torigian always supported his wife and children in their practice of the Catholic faith. Knowing that his funeral could be permitted in our church and at a
mass, they were much consoled and we began planning the liturgy, a liturgy
they hoped would express their love for him and their faith in God.
We Catholics value the mass as our highest form of worship. Yet for many Catholics, even very good and
faithful ones, the liturgy (or the Mass as we often call it) is what happens in church one hour a week. Our
faith tells us that in that hour all that we are and all that we have are united with the one, perfect self offering of Jesus Christ to the Father. If the homilist does his homework, we will come away from that Sunday
Eucharist with a message for our daily life.
This is very good, but it does not express the richness of what the mass is and the breadth of what the mass
can do for us. If our minds and imaginations could grasp it better, we would know that the mass brings together every thread of the fabric of our life and makes it a tapestry of our entire reality. When I talk with
young students in our school to plan our monthly mass, I ask them to think of symbols of the various activities which make up their day and their week. These reminders of ordinary life are brought forward to the
altar in procession. A plastic globe, a soccer ball, sneakers, and textbooks are only a few items that have
been placed before our altar. Folks may snicker at the sight but this simple gesture is meant to help the students make the connection between this liturgy and the rest of their life.
Generations of Faith, the new way we have to enhance our faith life as families and as a parish, aims at creating and anticipating a desire in us to participate more fully in the Sunday liturgy and make it an experience of God and community that carries over into the remaining hours and days of the week. Through careful, thoughtful preparation that precedes each mass and through the sharing of food and the home activities
that follow it, we aim at being energized by God’s Holy Spirit. Through collaboration with the religious
education program, the school religion program, and the Spanish religious education program, we want
people to realize how inclusive we are as church. We want to build a sense of unity that begins with little
ones and touches the hearts of seniors as well.
We also want every Catholic we can reach to appreciate the gift of time and seasons. The mass follows a
calendar that is not disconnected from the calendar pages which mark our activities at home, school, and
work. Liturgy moves with the ebb and flow of the human spirit, up its peaks and down into its valleys. If
with the different parts of Generations of Faith, we do our part and let God do his in us, we will rediscover
the mass as much more than just one hour and one place a week. I hope and pray that step by step we will
walk as a parish in a direction where we can see God becoming more present, more active, more often, than
we ever have before.

Evangelistic Outreach
The Archdiocese of Boston is sponsoring a oneday evangelistic outreach on September 25 at the
Lowell Memorial Auditorium titled: “Revealing
the Face of Christ”. The day will run from
9:00AM—4:00PM and will be filled with joyful
music, inspirational talks by Father Lou Cerulli
from Montreal, and a performance by Rob Surrette, a gifted local artist. This is an extraordinary
opportunity to introduce, or re-introduce family,
neighbors and friends to the person of Christ. All
are welcome. An offering will be taken during the
day, but attendance is free. Please plan to come
and bring a friend who needs to know Christ loves
him or her. Let everyone know the Catholic
Church in Boston is alive and strong.
MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER
An experience for building communication, creating intimacy, self esteem and enriching the values
of marriage, family and faith. This program is for
couples who believe they have a good marriage but
desire a deeper understanding, a richer communication, a better quality and more spirituality in their

Organ Concert
Rev. John G. Kiley, Pastor of Our Lady of Hope
Church, Ipswich, MA will give an Organ concert

St. Cornelius
A Roman priest, Cornelius’ election to pope was
delayed fourteen months by Decius’ persecution
of the Christians. He had to deal with bishops
who were both far too lax and far to cruel to their
flocks, as well as a bishop who suddenly declared
himself pope over Cornelius. St. Cornelius
weathered this storm, and restored balance and
order to the Church. When persecutions of the
Christians started up again in 253 under Emperor
Gallus, Cornelius was sent into exile. He died a
martyr, probably from hardships he was forced to
endure. He remains a model of the Church’s commitment to truth, even during the most troubling
of times.
The Espousal Prayer Community
Every Tuesday at 7:30p.m., all are welcome to attend The Espousal Prayer Community for prayer,
teaching, witnessing and Mass. Adoration is open
to all every Tuesday and Thursday.
September 26, 2004: Day for Divorced and Separated. Presenter will be Deacon Pierre Desilets.
This day will focus on helping individuals who are
divorced or separated to deal with core issues. Anger, guilt, forgiveness, decision making and related
issues will be covered. The Espousal Center is located at 554 Lexington St., in Waltham.

EL VIÑADOR
Comunidad Hispana
El Evangelio de la Misa (Lucas 16, 1-13) nos habla de la habilidad de un administrador
que es llamado a cuentas por el amo, acusado de malversar su hacienda. Jesús, a propósito
de esta sagacidad, añadió con tristeza: los hijos de este mundo son más sagaces en lo suyo
que los hijos de la luz. No alaba el Señor el Señor la inmoralidad del intendente que se prepara, en el poco tiempo que le queda antes de que lo despidan, unos amigos que luego lo
reciban y ayuden, sino que alabó la capacidad de resolver una situación difícil. No es raro
ver el esfuerzo y los incontables sacrificios que muchos hacen para obtener más dinero,
poder, o subir en la escala social. Pues el mismo empeño hemos de poner los cristianos en
servir a Dios, multiplicando los medios humanos para hacerlos rendir a favor de los más necesitados.
Ningún ideal es comparable al de servir a Cristo, utilizando los talentos recibidos como medios para un fin
que sobrevive más allá de este mundo que pasa. No tenemos más que un solo Señor, y a Él hemos de encaminar, sin excepción, los actos de la vida: el trabajo, los negocios, el descanso. Para ser un administrador
de los talentos que ha recibido, de la hacienda de la que debe dar cuenta a su Señor, el cristiano ha de
dirigir sus acciones a promover el bien común, encontrando las soluciones adecuadas, con ingenio, con interés, con profesionalidad, sacando adelante empresas y obras buenas en servicio de los demás, teniendo la
seguridad de que su quehacer vale más la pena que el negocio más atrayente. “Ya lo dijo el Maestro: ¡ojala
los hijos de la luz pongamos, en hacer el bien, por lo menos el mismo empeño y la obstinación con que se
dedican a sus acciones, los hijos de las tinieblas! No te quejes: ¡trabaja, en cambio, para ahogar el mal en
abundancia de bien!
Aunque es la gracia la que cambia los corazones, el Señor quiere que utilicemos medios humanos en el
apostolado, y los procedimientos lícitos que estén a nuestro alcance. Enseña Santo Tomás de Aquino
(Suma Teológica) que sería tentar a Dios no hacer lo que podemos y esperarlo todo de Él. No somos instrumentos inertes. Los hijos de la luz han de poner también –junto a los medios sobrenaturales- su interés, su
capacidad humana, su ingenio, su afán... al conquistar un alma para Cristo. Jesús mismo, para realizar su
misión divina, quiso servirse muchas veces, de medios terrenos: unos cuantos panes y peces, un poco de
barro... Pidamos al Señor, que apoyados en su gracia, tengamos la audacia del administrador infiel, en
nuestra misión apostólica
Reflexión: La actitud del cristiano ante los bienes terrenos. Los hijos de la luz deben imitar en la búsqueda de la salvación la conducta que los hombres mundanos siguen para
resolver sus asuntos temporales. Háganse amigos con la riquezas injustas, aquí los amigos son los pobres que serán los que después intervendrán ante Dios, (Mt 25,40): los ricos auxiliaran al pobre en este mundo con sus riquezas; los pobres a los ricos en el
mundo venidero. El dinero que originariamente se usó a efecto de justicia se puede convertir en medio para ayuda a los perdidos, a los pobres e indigentes de la tierra. Tal es la
forma verdadera de ganar amigos para que nos reciban cuando dejemos la administración
de este mundo. Es precioso ser fieles en lo poco a fin de recibir después lo grande. Dios
nos ha encomendado lo pequeño de la tierra, los bienes materiales la riqueza; como
bueno administradores tenemos que utilizar ese depósito de acuerdo a la voluntad de su dueño, es decir, a
favor de los pobres, como un medio de amor y de servicio. Sólo entonces nos confiarán el autentico tesoro,
el verdadero don de Dios, el reino.
No se puede servir a dos señores. Quien absolutice la riqueza de este mundo, con sus formas y exigencias,
se convierten en enemigo de Dios. El que adora el verdadero Dios no puede hacer de la riquezas en ídolo
meta de su vida.
Oración: Servirte sólo a Ti, Señor, y no mirar al mundo sus ídolos de poder y consumismo

así poder servir al prójimo. Durante
tu tiempo en la Iglesia, conserva
siempre el respeto por los que están
orando y deséan escuchar la Misa con atención. Pedimos su colaboración para no estar platicando durante
la Santa Misa, tener más control sobre los niños y no
introducir alimentos, ni goma de mascar en la Casa de

Oracion y Vida, comenzando el

¿Que son los Talleres de Oración y Vida ?(TOV)
Son un servicio dentro de la Iglesia. Pero no un
servicio universal, para todo.
Son un método práctico para aprender a orar; y
orar de una manera ordenada, variada y progresiva: desde los primeros pasos hasta las profundidades de la contemplación
Conversión
Aunque el hombre puede desatender los santos
mandamientos de Dios durante toda su vida terrena,
tendrá que dar cuenta de ello tarde o temprano. La
más tremenda catástrofe que puede acaecer a un
hombre es una muerte imprevista. El hombre puede
prevenirse en el momento presente admitiendo a
Dios y obedeciendo sus mandamientos. Pero
después de la muerte el hombre ya no podrá salvarse así mismo. Aunque ha tenido toda una vida
para aprovecharse del amor y de los dones de Dios,
ahora se enfrenta ya con su justicia. La justicia divina le recompensará conforme como ha sido su
vida en la tierra, y así irá al cielo o al infierno.
En este taller se aprende trabajando y se trabaja
aprendiendo. Trabajar se refieren a la actividad
orante: orando se aprende a orar.
En el Taller de Oración, pues, se aprende a entrar
paso a paso en la relación personal con el Señor.
La oración es, ante todo, don divino, gracia; pero
al mismo tiempo, por tratarse de actividad humana, es también arte; y, como arte, la oración
está sometida a las normas de un aprendizaje
metódico y progresivo.
El método, sin la gracia, no nos llevará a ninguna
parte.
Un hombre espiritual es aquel que busca hacer el
mejor uso posible del breve tiempo de nuestra vida
en la tierra. Busca vivir de tal manera, que nunca
sacrifica el éxito definitivo por un éxito más pequeño y menos importante. Pone en primer lugar lo
que está primero. Así intenta seguir la santa voluntad de Dios en toda la cosas.
Por eso, nos hemos esforzado por colocar en la
organización interna del Taller objetivos claros,
una pedagogía, contenidos y mucha disciplina.
Igual que en un taller hemos programado un
aprendizaje metódico y progresivo, y con una
intensa práctica.
El primer paso de una vida espiritual consiste en la
purificación propia. Aunque la purificación propia
es tarea para toda la vida, quien está en este periodo
de la vida espiritual hace de ella su meta diaria. Lucha por no caer en pecado mortal y aquellas faltas
veniales que puedan llevar al pecado mortal. Haciendo esto, echa los cimientos a las virtudes que posteriormente ha de practicar de una manera más
positiva y no ya como mera oposición a sus faltas
actuales.

Generaciones de fé: La liturgia al centro de la vida.
La semana pasada, me reuní la con la familia de Peter Torigian, un hombre extraordinario y
presidente de Peabody por muchos años, para ofrecerles mi ayuda en la preparación del funeral.
Obviamente ellos querían que se celebrara una misa y recibir la comunión por el amado esposo y padre.
Aunque el Señor Torigian había sido bautizado en la Iglesia Apostólica Armenia, siempre apoyó a su
esposa e hijos en la práctica de su fé católica. Sabiendo que su funeral podría realizarse en nuestra parroquia
con una misa fue de mucho consuelo para ellos y empezamos los planes para la liturgia, una liturgia que
esperamos podría expresar su amor por él y su fé en Dios.
Los católicos valoramos la misa como nuestra mas alta forma de adoración a Dios. Aunque para
muchos católicos, aun para los muy buenos y asiduos fieles, la liturgia (o la misa como comúnmente la
llamamos), es lo que pasa en la iglesia una hora a la semana. Nuestra fe nos dice que en esa hora todo lo
que somos y todo lo que tenemos se unen con la única y perfecta ofrenda de Jesús con el Padre. Si el
homilista hace su parte, saldremos de la liturgia con un mensaje para nuestra vida diaria.
Esto es muy bueno, pero no expresa la riqueza de lo que la misa y lo que la misa hace por nosotros.
Si nuestras mentes e imaginación pudiera comprenderlo mejor, podría saber que la misa lleva consigo cada
fibra de la fabrica de nuestra vida y hace un tapiz de nuestra entera realidad. Cuando digo a los niños d
nuestra escuela que planeamos la misa mensual, les pido que piensen en símbolos de las varias actividades
que realizan las cuales hace su día y su semana. Estos recuerdos de la vida ordinaria se llevan al altar en
procesión. Un mundo de plástico, un balón de soccer, tenis y libros son solo unas de las cosas que ponemos
en el altar. Algunos piensan que esto es raro a la vista, pero este simple gesto en el camino de la vida.
Generaciones de fé, el nuevo programa que hemos iniciado tiene como objetivo elevar nuestra fé
como familias y como parroquia para ayudarnos a crear y anticipar un deseo en todos para participar mas
activamente en la liturgia del domingo y hacerla una experiencia de Dios y comunidad que la lleva a cada
hora y día de la semana. A través de un cuidadoso proceso de preparación que precede cada misa y a través
de la comida compartida y las actividades del hogar que le siguen, nuestra intención es llenarnos de la
energía que viene del espíritu santo. A través de la colaboración con el programa de educación religiosa, el
programa de religión de la escuela, y del programa en español del programa de educación religiosa,
queremos que la gente se de cuenta que todos estamos incluidos en la iglesia. Queremos hacer sentir la
unidad que principia con los pequeños y llega al corazón de los ancianos también.
También queremos compartir con cada católico que encontramos el don del tiempo y de las
estaciones. La misa sigue un calendario que no está desconectado de las páginas del calendario que marcan
nuestras actividades en nuestro hogar, escuelas y trabajo. La liturgia se nueve con los altibajos del espíritu
humano. Si con las diferentes partes de Generaciones de fé, nosotros hacemos nuestra parte y dejamos que
Dios haga la suya en nosotros, descubriremos la misa como lo que en realidad es, no limitada a una hora y
un lugar a la semana. Espero y pido a Dios que poco a poco caminemos como parroquia en una dirección
donde podemos ver a Dios hacerse presente más frecuentemente, más activamente, como nunca antes lo
hemos visto.
