at Riverside Middle School (RIV)
Access SecondShift has been the primary provider for
after-school activities for local middle school students since 2009.
Access SecondShift provides a safe and positive setting in which middle school students
may learn and grow. Maintaining low teacher/student ratios (10 students to 1 teacher)
ensures a high-quality experience for both teachers and students.
Fall session: October 5th – December 16th, 2015
** There will be no class held during the week of Thanksgiving (November 23rd – 27th),
or whenever Riverside Middle School is closed**
Classes are held on Mondays, Tuesdays & Wednesdays at Riverside Middle School
(Unless otherwise noted in the class description)
SecondShift highlights:

Students receive a snack each day before classes start
Classes run from 4:15 - 5:45 (Unless otherwise noted)
Cost is $20 per class for the entire 10-week session (Unless otherwise noted)

RIV SECONDSHIFT CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
WERE NOT GETTING ZAPPED (5TH & 6th)

This class will help support 5th and 6th grade students with Math, Science, Social Studies and Literacy homework.

Taught by Ms. Van Dervender and Mr. Hughes. Class is 1 hour long. Select one or more days (Mon, Tues and/or Wed.)

WE’RE NOT GETTING ZAPPED (7 & 8 )

This class will help support 7th and 8th grade students with Math, Science, Social Studies and Literacy homework.

Taught by Ms. Hughes & Mr. Clark. Class is 1 hour long. Select to attend one, two or three days (Mon, Tues and/or Wed.)
MATH CLUB 7th & 8th Grade

This class is designed to support students who need some extra attention to develop skills and to help with homework in
grades 7th and 8th. Math club includes peer tutors and allows for individual help for students.

Taught by Ms. Plummer. Class is 1 hour. Select to attend one, two or three days (Mon, Tues and/or Wed.)
JR. POLICE ACADEMY

See what it takes to become a Police Officer! Learn about law enforcement basics, building searches, fingerprinting, a K-9
demonstration, mock traffic stops and crime scenes investigations.

Taught by Officer Dominguez & the New Castle Police Department. Class is 1.5 hours on Wednesdays.
CROCHETING

Students will start at their level of ability. Beginning students will learn basic stiches and projects while more advanced
students will have more challenging projects, including hats, Amigurumi, blankets and more.

Taught by Ms. Peed. Class is 1.5 hours long on Tuesdays.
DECORATIVE EMBROIDERY

Students will learn basic embroidery stitches and then embroider a pattern of their choice to make a small pillow. Great for a
holiday gift! Taught by Ms. Peed. Class is 1.5 hours on Wednesdays.
PHOTOGRAPHY

Students will have fun learning how to work a camera and capture snapshots in time. They will learn different techniques and
tactics that photographers use to take good pictures and will be able to add their own creative flair to their photography.

Students should have their own digital camera, appropriate batteries for the camera and an SD card.

Taught by professional photographer Danielle Willey of D. Willey Photography. Class is 1.5 hours on Mondays.
SEWING

Students will learn to use a sewing machine, choose fabric, read and use a pattern and end with making simple garments such
as sleep pants and skirts.

Taught by Ms. Ketelsleger. Class is 1.5 hours long. Monday and Tuesday after school. Limited to 8 students
ACTIVITIES & GAMES

Students will spend time outside on scavenger hunts and other group games while the weather is nice. As the weather cools
or if it rains we will play group games and board games inside. Taught by Mr. Sandblom. Class is 1.5 hour; held on Mondays.
ANIME

We will be watching amazingly awesome anime. We will watch series as well as full length movies. The class will include
watching and discussing Japanese animation series and full length feature films. Some movies will be rated PG or PG-13.

Taught by Mr. Jacobi. Class is 1.5 hours long on Mondays & Wednesdays.
CHESS CLUB

This after school activity will focus on rules, ethics, special strategies, intellectual gains, and enjoyment of the game of chess.

Students will work with both real life chess boards as well as computer generated chess against the computer.

Taught by Chris Foreback. Class is 1 hour long on Mondays.
DANCE FITNESS & ZUMBA

Students will get a good workout learning different styles of dance! Students will have fun doing Zumba, hip hop choreography,
breakdancing, and other fun styles of dance! Taught by Claudia Santa Cruz. Class is 1 hour long on Mondays,
DR. WHO

The class will watch different Dr. Who television shows and discuss characters, plot lines and compare episodes.

Taught by Mr. Davis. Class is 1 hour long on Wednesdays.
RIVERSIDE RUNNING CLUB

In the RRC you will build endurance and have fun. This is a great opportunity to get in shape and even prepare for other
sports all while being social and meeting new people. All are welcome - No experience required!

Taught by Mr. Ozminkowski. Class is 1.5 hours. Select one or more days (Mon, Tues and/or Wed.)
SOO BAHK DO

Introduction to the traditional Korean Martial Art of Soo Bahk Do. We focus on discipline, respect, confidence, concentration,
body conditioning and self-defense. Taught by Cyndi Speedy of Rocky Mountain Martial Arts. Class is 1.5 hours on Wed.

Class is $30 which includes the uniform.
SOCCER

Come and join in on the fun! We are going to be playing soccer after school on Mondays and Wednesdays for 1 hour.

We’ll have small teams (depending on enrollment) and we’ll work on improving your skills. Taught by Mr. Taucher.
MINECRAFT

Students will be able to design different creative mods each week. We will NOT use survival mode, any violent settings or
character actions in this class. Each student must have a Minecraft membership.

Taught by Mr. Davis. Class is 1 hour on Tuesdays.

GANCHILLO

Estudiantes van a empesar a su nivel de habilidad. Estudiantes aprenderan los basicos de el ganchillo, estudiantes en un
nivel mas alto aprenderan como hacer gorras, colchas, y mas.

Enseñada por Ms. Peed. Clase es 1.5 horas. Despues de escuela los Martes.
BORDADOS DECORATIVOS

Estudiantes aprenderan los basicos de bordados decorativos. La clase enseñara a los estudiantes como hacer y decorar una
almuada pequeña. Enseñada por Ms. Peed. Clase es 1.5 horas. Despues de escuela los Miercoles.
FOTOGRAFIA

Estudiantes van a divertirse aprendiendo como usar una camera y tomar fotos. Los estudiantes van aprender tecnicas para
tomar buenas fotos. Los estudiantes van a poder poner su propio estilo en su fotografia y ensenar sus habilidades.

Enseñada por Danielle Willey. Clase es 1.5 horas. Despues de escuela los Lunes.
TEJIDO

Estudiantes van aprender como usar una machine para hacer tejidos, como escojer el material, como usar differente tacticas
para hacer simple tejidos. Los estudiantes van a aprender como hacer pantalones de dormir y faldas.


ACTIVIDADES Y JUEGOS

Estudiantes estaran afuera en una busqueda de tesoros y otros juegos de grupo mintras el clima permita. Cuenda empieza a
dar frio bamos a jugar juegos de mesa adentro de la escuela.

Ensenado por Mr. Sandblom. Lunes despues de la escuela por 1 hora.
ANIME

Vamos a ver programas de anime que son asombrosos y impresionantes. Vamos a var programas y peliculas enteras
de anime. Estudiantes deben de tener permiso para ver peliculas PG/PG-13 por el lenguaje y posible violencia (no
vamos a ver peliculas de miedo)
CLUB DE AJEDREZ

Estudiantes se van a enfocar en las reglas, etica, y estrategia de el juego de Ajedrez. Estudiantes van a jugar en persona y
con una computadora para mejorar su habilidad. Enseñada por Mr. Foreback. Clase es 1 hora.
BAILE Y SALUD
 Estudiantes ban obtener buen ejercicio aprendiendo diferentes estilos de bailar! Estudiantes se divertiran bailando
Zumba, Hip Hop, BreakDancing, y varios otros estilos de baile! Enseñada por Claudia Santa Cruz. Clase es 1 hora.
DR. WHO

La clase va a ver differente programas de Dr. Who. Vamos a platicar sobre los amigos y enemigos de Dr. Who y porque son
parte de el programa. Enseñada por Mr. Davis. Clase es 1 hora. Despues de escuela los Miercoles.
CLUB DE CORRER DE RIVERSIDE

En el Club de Correr de Riverside (RRC) los estudiantes trabajaran su resistencia durante correr y se diviertaran. Esta
clase es una buena oportunidad para ponerce saludable, estar preparado para otros deportes, y hacer amigos. Todos
so bienvenidos! Enseñada por Mr. Ozminkowski. Clase es 1.5 horas. Despues de escuela los Lunes, Martes o Miercoles.
SOO BAHK DO

Introduccion a la arte martial de Soo Bahk Do. Soo Bahk Do es un arte marcial tradicional coreana que promueve el desarrollo


