Our stratic plan includes a strong commitment to research and development, leading to innovation or R+D+i. The department has been re-structured and new personel have been added to promote the research and development of innovative new products and processes. Currently five people are working in the R & D department, based in the headquarters in Corella. They have launched several collaborative projects with universities and outside technology centers, multiplying the effectiveness o f the team. We believe this strategic investment will enable SIC Lazaro to be the leaders in counterweight technology in Europe in the near term and worldwide in the longer term. I would like to start my comments with joy and optimism, but that is difficult because of the current economic conditions here in Spain and in some other parts of the world. I know the economy is causing concerns for you and it certainly is affecting me as well. Our company has facilities in countries where the economies are improving such as Germany, Poland, Italy, Brazil, helping to offset conditions in countries that are not doing as well, such as Spain. The performance of our country´s political leadership has been disappointing to me, because many of us thought that Spain was about to turn the corner and improve our economic conditions rapidly. Compared to the other countries I mentioned, Spain is actually losing ground. The economic growth of these countries is now providing support (and hope) for the people of SIC LAZARO and our stakeholders, and in some cases for the for the Spanish people in general . I think we all wish that the the economy of Spain was providing this support, and that we could rely less on our foreign partners. But, without our international customers, I believe our company would be much weaker. The large investments we have made in recent years to grow in multiple international markets have proven to be the correct path in these trying times and is providing stability for our company. Many Spanish business leaders that I know wish that they had the same strategy of international diversification. To help us guarantee the future stability of SIC LAZARO, the board of directors and our steering committee wishes to challenge each employee to concentrate all of their efforts towards achieving 3 things: RESULTS, RESULTS, RESULTS. The best and most successful companies in the world from Europe to the US focus on planning and achieving great results. This concept we are asking you to support and lead is to strive for success. For, as in any sporting event, the winners get the prize. By winning more often than we lose, we can continue to experience the growth and success we have enjoyed in the past. We believe that our team must strive to win (get results) in all that we do. In the past, our efforts to internationalize our company have helped us survive and grow in these difficult times. Looking to the future, I challenge every employee to assume the responsibility to innovate, make good decisions quickly, before our competitors can react, and above all to add to our culture the drive to get RESULTS every day. In this way, our future will be one that we all desire. Javier Lázaro Director General (C.E.O.) One of the key elements of the Strategic Project for SIC LAZARO on organizational development is based on the pillars of direct communication, maintaining the initiative to bring management and employees every three months to meet their mutual concerns, suggestions and questions through the “Management breakfasts. “This is an activity that generates great satisfaction, being a place to discuss issues about the company we all care about. The objectives of this action are: - Ensuring that employees receive corporate information. - Bringing employees closer to Management. - Bringing the Management to employees. - Ensuring that the employee has access to information. - Making the work of employees coherent and lined up. - Getting to know the reality of the situation and acting appriopriately. - To facilitate the understanding and access to information. We have been applying this initiative for over a year, with it’s help we intend to improve both logistics (organization, timing, coordination), and the quality of interventions. Therefore, it is desirable that the ones attending will be informed about the meeting at least one week before the “breakfast”, so that they can prepare the topics they want to discuss; it is recommended to do this with colleagues. On March 28th, 2011 the following people were present on the “Breakfast with Management”: Belén Martínez, José María Reinaldo, Sergio Lázaro and Agustin Lopez. POR SUPUESTO”. 8 I Página Noticias / Newletter Nº 5, Julio / July, 2011 dents. Multiple actions are launched, including communication and training programs. We must use the “EPIS” - PPE (Perso nal Protective Equipment) and propose improvements to increase comfort, ergonomics, but the first thing is to protect, and there will be time for a second phase of comfort...”. Sergio Lazaro stressed the need to maintain order and tidyness in the workplace, and reported a lack of controls on the technical specifications of some posts, giving the example of Toyota, where any professional (regardless of the level of liability assumed) first passes through the production lines. Javier Lazaro stated that “commanders must know how to direct and manage people and resources, have criteria to MANAGE. Regarding the policy of “verbal written” warnings, there seems to be a controversy in the environment and I would like to clarify it. This is not to send people to the street, except that what happened requires disciplinary action, but to focus on what the company expects of its employees, because commanders often complain of being bored and tired of giving instructions that are not followed. This is a tool which allows them to strengthen their authority and get us all to adapt to the high standards required by the present market”. He said that “in this process one must have the humility to admit mistakes. Before rumours are spread, we should ask why, what for are things done, avoiding the temptation to seek easy criticism. This does not help us in anything”. Sergio Lazaro asked that “if we want to save costs, why do we outsource and let other companies do the jobs that we could do?”. Javier Lazaro insisted that “it only happens when there is no other option, because we understand that we must protect jobs, our jobs. In addition, we are aware of what is happening in our environment and the level of unemployment that is being suffered. So, among other measures we have ‘taken away the overtime’.“ These even generated ‘problems of getting along’, why me, or why me not while the other one yes? If we divide the work between all of us, we will survive this situation of crisis”. Javier Lazar insisted that “we must increase the level of professionalism, avoiding short cuts such as complaining or doing nothing. We must now more than ever face problems by requiring fromeach other to get the best result. If we can not improve the figures, the revenues, we will not be able to invest in improvements… It will be a matter of time for others to get us out of business if we do not act responsibly, with professionalism and demand, self-discipline, adapting ourselves. CHANGE costs, but it is necessary; is this trip worth it? On July 1st the second Coffee with Management of the year was held (this year was no quarterly and monthly as before); Luis Miguel Jimenez Marin, Roberto Varela, Luis Herrera, Ramon Sarnago, Abdelkader Laouti, Andres Lorza and Joseba Sola attended. Luis Miguel asked about the prospects for this year, and Javier Lazaro told him that “some customers are demanding technological changes that threaten not only the results, but could also affect the jobs. Apparently the ballast section for heavy machinery has a better perspective than the elevator division. In addition, the market context requires us to maintain and increase the level of excellence in customer SERVICE and focus on the QUALITY of our products to avoid any loss of credibility and trust of our customers. Any of us, when we act like customers, we can understand what our customers ask from us. It’s a matter of being in their role.“ Abdelkader Laouti mentioned both the training policy of the company and industrial processes, focusing on continuous improvement (analyzing methods and failure to prevent them from happening again) and the professionalization of everyone, even in the communication processes between areas and employees. In this sense, he asked for employees to be taken into account, to be heard (by controllers), and instructed (with documentation and training), as this will help get better results. Andres Lorza commented on the work being done in that direction, so you can sense coming improvements. Roberto Varela asked about the investments affecting production jobs, to what Javier Lazaro replied that the goal of management is not only to “dignify” the areas of work, but to invest in technology, which implies an effort for everyone, also for the employees that must be trained. Luis Herrera commented on the need to improve the service of the maintenance area, to which all participants agreed that it must go along with improvements in global PLANNING. Andrew confirmed that many times we work on a day to day basis and this prevents us from coordinating ourselves, working better. 10 I Página In the current situation, changes of the market and the environment oblige us to develop a much more dynamic and flexible character in our organizational behavior. In this vein, one of the challenges for Sic Lazaro for this year 2011 has been the implementation of “Management through Projects”. We understand that this methodology will allow us to focus our efforts around a common goal that will allow us to achieve the best results. To successfully meet this objective, to be able to control the uncertainty associated with the projects and conclude them by achieving excellent results, training and qualifications are required. In this sense, it was decided to launch this model of management with expert support and training that will enable us to acquire the experience, skills and knowledge necessary to remove the obstacles involved in projects and to complete them on time, with the right cost, scope and quality previously agreed. This training activity “Management by Projects”, referred to in the plan of formation of the company for the year 2011, was deployed at the offices of Sic Lazaro between the 12th and 19th of last April, with a total attendance of 45 students divided in different groups. The aim of the training was to provide the knowledge, methodology and tools needed to develop each of the projects to be developed in the organization. This methodology integrates the processes of planning, attracting, energizing, organizing, managing talents and resources within the organization, so that in the end all of it’s members direct their work to the development of a common project, in compliance with the limits of time and cost, without the last-minute rush, and with a good working environment. Having analyzed the course assessment questionnaires given to participants, a positive assessment of this training in terms of content and the ability of the coach have been observed. (Curso Pintura -WELLD-) 1) The course was theoretical and practical. In the theoretical part they explained us some common faults committed because of an excess of self-confidence and used several videos and slides for this. In the practical part we were taught to properly handle the truck by making circuits with cones and moving forwards, backwards and diagonally. We also learned to carry a minimum load of pallets at different heights. 2) About 12 to 15 people participated in the course, all plant personnel who use the truck from time to time. 3) To carry out the theoretical part the teacher used videos and pictures, and explained many things. However, in the practical part, we rode around the track with cones and obstacles, just as the teacher told us, to create common difficulties (lateral extent, etc.) 4) I thought the practical part would be more complicated, but being about things you already do it was easier. What was stressed is that one must be very careful when using the forklift. 5) Such initiatives are needed, because anyone can take the truck, but you must have a base; I think they are done for everyones benefit, both the worker’s and the company’s; having more knowledge about the risks and less possibilities of suffering an accident. 6) Everything about learning is good and it is another resource you can count on. Additionally, the atmosphere during the training was very good and you spent a good time with your colleagues. Additionally, the company gains more qualified staff. 14 I Página 1) We were taught to use the truck and the risks involved with that position. 2) Quite a lot of plant workers from different sections. 3) There was a theoretical and a practical part. In the practical part, we learned to move pallets, upload and download them from the shelves, zig-zag on the truck circuit wih cones, etc.. While two of us were driving the truck, the rest of us watched and the teacher explained things. 4) I expected the course to be only theoretical, so it exceeded my expectations. The practical part was very good and the coach explained well the risks, management, etc. 5) This type of courses are needed, because in addition to getting the title you are taught to do things well and with less risk. In addition, the company needs the people to have the title and to be trained. 6) Professionally, before I couldn’t use the truck because I didn’t have the permit; now I’m in the position and I use the truck. Moreover, at the end of the theoretical part we had a little test to prove that all terms and concepts we had learned had been understood and taken in perfectly. The level was higher than I had expected. 5) This kind of initiatives, from my point of view, are very helpful because they give you even more knowledge of what you knew before. I also believe they are necessary, because knowing more about this mechanism helps avoid risks and danger, since the course was also based on safety and prevention. 6) I have already ran the crane, but these courses “open your eyes” in the sense that they teach you things you did not know or did not see their importance. A challenge in which both our new colleagues in the USA and the rest of the organization will define much of SIC Lázaro’s future. The American and the European markets are on the spearhead of technology, where a company that aspires to be a leader and reference should be. We have thus started a commitment to the growth of the company on the world’s largest market for our products, to ensure the future sustainability of our enterprise, and the global recognition of SIC Lázaro as a brand, making us feel proud of what we are building together. http:/www.sic-lazaro.es Xu Handong, Yang Rong, Qian Qiaomei y Yan Shuzheng Un futuro esperanzador A hopeful future Obviamente, el mercado del ascensor chino es tan notable que cualquier empresa ambiciosa piensa seriamente en él. Obviously, the Chinese elevator market is so remarkable that any ambitious company must think about it seriously. However, the competition is high, too. From the first day that Sic-Lazaro arrived to China, we have been struggling with customers and competitors for prices, participation and products, and this will continue to happen. Unlike other parts of an elevator that involve more technology, quality and facility requirements, in counterweights quality gives way to price, and this brings much pressure on us. Now, with better understanding of the business and with an idea to re-design the strategy and investment plan, the Haian company has the potential to do better in China. According to the frame plan, Corella will carefully study the Chinese situation and re-construct our scope of business, facility and capacity. Everyday in Haian we understand better the global strategy and we look forward to a brighter future. http:/www.sic-lazaro.es Página I 19 Noticias / Newletter Nº 5, Julio / July, 2011 POLONIA Noticias / Newletter Nº 5, Julio / July, 2011 POLAND POLONIA POLAND Programa de prácticas Tenemos nuevos alumnos en prácticas en la empresa. For the second time we participate in a program that prepares graduates to work on independent positions. Previously, we organized professional trainings for two people, Anna Szulc in the export department, and Przemysław Komar from the production department. Today these people work with us. - Who can get an internship? Marcin Janiszewski: “the internship program is designed for universtity students in their last year and graduates, who have no more than 2 years of work experience, and who know foreign languages, at least English. We looked for people with passion, motivated and able to work in a team. Analytical thinking is also an important factor.” - Why use this method of obtaining workers? Marcin Janiszewski: “We have the opportunity to observe the trainee for several months, thus recognizing his skills, commitment and personality. Internships are a very good way of recruiting staff. “ - What does the company gain? Marcin Janiszewski: “The idea of an internship program can be compared to practice. From the perspective of a trainee, the point is that besides theoretical knowledge, he/she learns a future profession; in practice, learns the rules of the company in order to work in the organization. An important factor is also the opportunity to gain professional experience. The company gains an employee who knows well the current procedures and the reality, and is familiar with the specificities of the job.” The internship is an opportunity to learn new skills and experience, especially work experience. The intention is for the intern to do what every other employee does. “I am responsible for supporting the financial department. My main tasks include posting invoices, bank statements, conducting business correspondence.“ said Anna Tamulonek, a participant of the internship program. Konrad Danczewski is on the internship since May. One of the key points of the first quarter of this year was introducing new projects of counterweights for cranes by the Polish team. For this purpose we made several investments in new tools and facilities needed for this kind of production process. We also expanded our team of welders and assemblers with the purpose of getting ready for new goals. The new employees were well accepted by the rest of the team and brought a lot of experience. In order to implement this production fast, Corella was visited by one of our Production Managers, Patryk Sawa. The main goal of this visit was understanding and analyzing each phase of the process. With great help of our Spanish colleagues we were able to gain invaluable experience of the Spanish team and train our most experienced employee Dariusz Trojanowski in the range of assembly and welding of these counterweights. Patryk Sawa said: “Thanks to this visit we had a chance to observe the process of production in Spain and compare the production capacity and equipment of our factories. It was also a good opportunity to exchange experience with our colleagues, which had a huge impact on a fast and effective development of this new project in Poland. In addition, I also focused on the analysis of technical documentation of projects and how to prevent possible problems during the manufacturing process. Another objective of this visit was to improve cooperation with the Spanish team. I think that these objectives were achieved successfully. We were well received and we could rely on their help. Now we are making the first pieces of this new product and so far everything is going in the right direction.” Another important step at the beginning of the year was preparing our company for the ISO 14001 audit. Therefore we made investments which included the accommodation of lead production area. The main part of this task was installing in the building a ventilation system which is designed to discharge lead fumes. We have finished all the work, and have just received an official certificate which gives us permission to use it according to the law. http:/www.sic-lazaro.es Página I 21 Noticias / Newletter Nº 5, Julio / July, 2011 BRASIL Noticias / Newletter Nº 5, Julio / July, 2011 BRAZIL ITALIA Giovanni Pratto “Seguimos creciendo” Como todos sabemos, Brasil es un país que en estos momentos se encuentra en auge y con un alto nivel de desarrollo y crecimiento económico. 22 I Página “We continue growing” As we all know, Brazil is booming right now and has a high level of development and economic growth. This results in many foreign companies opening their subsidiaries in Brazil. At the same time, companies are increasing their sales and shopping volumes. Because of this, recent months have been tough for us in terms of workload, but very satisfactory in terms of results. I’m proud of what we are achieving, step by step we are turning Sic Lazaro do Brasil into a selfsustaining and profitable company. At the same time we do not want to feel satisfied yet, and want to take advantage of the push the market is giving us to grow further and make Sic Lazaro do Brasil a big company. I am especially happy with the results of our subsidiary Londrina, which was opened in 2010. During one year and a few months it has become a profitable company in which we are already beginning to make significant investments that will help us continue to improve in quality and customer service, something that differentiates us from others. Our sales have doubled in recent months, and we will keep working to achieve more and more. Our matrix in Pinda is still struggling as well, with results rising in 2011, and acquiring more and more small billing customers, who help us get to be the market leaders. Our ambition is to get new customers, reduce costs to remain competitive, expand the product to new markets and professionalize our Brazilian company ... keeping in mind what Brazil means to Sic Lazaro, the first country that opened it’s doors to our company. http:/www.sic-lazaro.es Unai López Futuro esperanzador Giovanni Pratto (Responsable de la planta italiana) afirma que: “Este primer semestre del año hemos notado una subida de los pedidos respecto al año pasado. Entre todos tenemos que conseguirlo”. http:/www.sic-lazaro.es Alessio Battello Hopeful future - Giovanni Prato (Plant Manager): “In the first semester of 2011 we have noticed a rise in the number of orders compared to last year. Our main efforts were focused on starting the work, and optimizing the new installations for the production concrete. We have kept the level of investments to improve our competitiveness in the market, and we hope that by the end of 2011 the situation on the Italian market will be a little more stable. We are preparing ourselves for this new scenario, looking for alternatives and developing new products which will give us the possibility to diversify the market (clients and products), to assure the viability of the business. And so, even though the future is not a 100% sure, we can say with hope that the situation can improve, and, knowing the effort we put into consolidating the Italian factory, we maintain a positive attitude.” -Unai López (engineer, industrial department): “In this first period of 2011 we have managed to stabilize production. Until the beginning of this year, for many reasons the production of the concrete section was very irregular. We have increased the levels of production and have achieved that today the plant in Italy is self-sufficient in 60% of it’s products. We continue working to achieve a return on production and investments, both past and future ones.” -Alessio Battello (Production Responsible/Manager) “We know that these years are being difficult for the European markets; in such circumstances the objectives of production increase, and that makes us give the best of us, work with determination and effort in order to obtain the highest possible profitability in production. Together with the Industrial Department we have prepared and started applying an action plan to achieve the goals set for the year 2011. We have to make it together.” Página I 23 SICLAZARO SISTEMAS INDUSTRIALES DE CONTRAPESO CULTURA DE EMPRESA Noticias / Newletter Nº 5, Julio / July, 2011 CORPORATE CULTURE MISIÓN MISSION En SIC LÁZARO nuestro futuro depende de proporcionar las mejores soluciones de contrapeso para todo tipo de equipos y maquinaria.
