The l4-penon crew on the lady
Washington obliteratd its misconceptions of snobbery among world-famous actors in April when Starship
Enterprise crew members invaded the
lady, a sailing vessel owned by the
stateof WashingOn.
Lady Washington Capt. Bill Larson shared his close encounter with
the Star Trek crew at a Natural
Gassen Toastmasters meeting on
Dec. 9 in Amarillo.
Larson, who lives on his own boat
at Port Angeles, Wash., was visiting
friends in Amarillo.
A colorful past led Larson to his
position as a merchant marine captain
for the Lady Washington, the exterior
replica of a brig named Enterprise that
sailedin the 1700s.
But the salty sailor, rctired Army
colonel and formbr sociology professor now has another accomplishment
under his belt. Iarson now can say
that he has captained the "Enter-
prise" in the movie, "Star Trek Generations."
Lanon's l0-day advenflre with
Star Trek began in tre ryring with a
call from his boss canceling a sailing
trip to Hawaii for the Lady. His orders were to sail to long Beach for
"whatever comes up with Paramount
Pictures."
Later, he learned that since his
vessel is a replica of the Enterprise,
the ship was to be a part of the "Star
Trek Generations" movie.
About 60 cast and crew members
spent 10 days filming an early scene
in the movie aboardthe brig.
Officen from the Star Trek vessel,
also named t}te Enterprise, are on the
spaceship's Holodeck celebrating a
staff promotion. The deck simulates a
fantasy scene aboard the Enterprise
sailing vesselin the 1700s.
Lanon and his crew usually sail
charter jobs and make visits to students to teach them about historic
sailing vessels. The idea ofbeing in a
movie took larson by surprise.
"We were in awe in expectationof
it," Larson said. "None of us on the
ship were Treckies to the point of collecting pins."
But crew members were familiar
with the televisionshowsand nrovies.
he said. However, they didn't know
what to expectfrom the movie crew.
"We all had our stereotypes,"
Larson said. "Most were kind-of negative."
Larson said he was raised believing that Hollywood people were very
snooty. He thought that they didn't
work hard and couldn't talk to regular
people.
None of his negative stereotypes
were true. The people were talented,
dedicated and deeply commitM to
their trade and profession,he said.
Larson most remembered a conversationthat he had with GatesMcFadden, who portrays Dr. Beverly
Crusher on Star Trek.
"She said, "My little boy always
wanted to meet a real seacapa.in,' "
Larson said.
A conversation with Lanm fulfilled $e bov's fantasv.

"Carpenters in l0 minutes can
make a piece of plastic look like solid
oak," Larson said.
The people in costuming and
makeup also ake their jobs seriously.
Both Worf and Dr. Crusher always
had two stunt doubles aboard and in
full makeup. Doubles of the two crew
members fell into the ocean waters
during fte movie.
Larson enjoyed seeing another side
to the film industry and to the individuals in the entertainrnentbusiness.
