October 21, 2012—Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary
October 21, 2012—Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Francis of Assisi is a Stewardship Parish A Community of Christian Disciples Living as Stewards of God’s Gifts "Jesus Christ gave up his life that we might live, therefore, whoever wishes to carry the cross for his sake must take up the proper weapons for the contest, especially those mentioned here. First, diligence; second, distrust of self; third, confidence in God; fourth, remembrance of the Passion; fifth, mindfulness of one’s own death; sixth, remembrance of God’s glory; seventh, the injunctions of Sacred Scripture following the example of Jesus Christ in the desert." - St. Catharine of Bologna, On the Seven Spiritual Weapons Views from the Pastor — Msgr. Larry Pichard Visiones del Párroco — Mons. Larry Pichard For the last two weeks I have been writing about our future Church and chapel. Today I would like to take you into the Church. We enter through the main front doors leading from the plaza or through the two side doors near the front of the Church, one leading from the south parking lot and the other from our present building. The narthex appears to be about as big as our present narthex. As we glance up to the high ceiling we see the huge dark wooden trusses amidst the lighter tongue-ingroove wooden slats, a nice contrast that we will see later in the nave of the Church. To our left we see the parlor which also doubles as a bride’s room. As we move to the right of the parlor we walk along the dark wooden panels and arrive at the hallway that leads to the restrooms. Directly across the narthex we see the hallway that leads to the sacristies—one for all liturgical ministers and one for the priests. Then we enter a lower ceiling area that focuses our attention upon the giant baptismal font into which we dip our hands into baptismal water (we often call it holy water but it is in reality baptismal water) and we make the sign of the cross reminding ourselves that we are a baptized people immersed into the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, a holy people entering a sacred space. The font will allow adult catechumens to stand in the water and be baptized with water poured over their head and body. Babies and young children will be held over the water near the sides to be baptized. Since the font as seen from above is an intersection of a cross and a circle, there is ample access for all of us to dip our hands into the font and sign ourselves as we depart. Next week I will describe the two Marian shrines to the left and to the right of the baptistry.
