FROM THE PASTOR
Dear Friends,
Recently an ecumenical group of NYC religious leaders lamented the fact that in our city, in 2009, 41% of pregnancies ended in abortion, a
horrifying statistic. It is a reality that religious people in general, especially Catholics, should be motivated to address. This week marks the 38th
anniversary of the Roe vs. Wade Supreme Court decision virtually and overnight permitting abortion on demand in the U.S. On January 22, 1973
the decision of nine men (only men at the time) on the Court invalidated the laws against abortion in most states. In more recent years, some progress has been made in placing a few marginal restrictions in some states, such as parental notification and federal limits on partial-birth abortion
and funding. Opinion polls have shown that a majority of Americans now believe that abortion should not be legal.
This year the annual March for Life will take place on Monday, January 24 in Washington DC, to remind our lawmakers that pro-life Americans will not accept the status quo on abortion. Those who would like to attend may sign up for the free bus leaving from St Joseph’s (30th Ave &
44th St Astoria). at 6:00 a.m. and returning that night. For more info, call Ann Gilmartin at 718-651-9017. There is a stirring youth Mass and rally
before the March at the Verizon Center in DC which shows us that the face of the pro-life movement is definitely youthful and has a long future.
The previous evening there is a magnificent liturgy which always fills the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and inspires our efforts
even further. (Details below) Although the self-chosen “elites” of our country tend to be pro-abortion and cannot fathom anyone who disagrees
with them, yet the trend is clear: protection of innocent unborn life is the wave of the future. But we must continue to do our best to protect those
who cannot protect themselves.
Locally, we invite your help with several truly pro-life efforts. “Bridge to Life” is a non-sectarian service group that works from parish space
here for many years providing primarily baby clothing and furniture to young or expectant mothers. Their volunteers work in the basement of
Catholic Charities every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30 to 1:30, and additional volunteers or contributions are always welcomed. Similarly, our
parish chapel at St Margaret Mary distributes food all year long to nearly 2000 people a month (as regularly reported in our bulletin) and runs a
monthly “rummage sale” of clothing and furniture, for which donations are always welcomed. Please call Denise at 718-721-9010 if you have material donations to make. It’s best if you can drop those items off at SMM, but we’ll work with you on that part. Finally, we remind you of the heroic
efforts of the lay apostolate “Helpers of God’s Precious Infants”, founded twenty years ago by Monsignor Phil Reilly, one of the great priests of our
diocese. (see their website at www.helpersbrooklynny.org ). The apostolate of prayerful peaceful witness outside abortion mills has spread
throughout the world and results in many “turnarounds” through God’s grace witnessed through immediate and visible prayer. They pray Tuesday
through Saturday at the “Choices” abortuary at 29-28 41 Ave,~ LIC, near St Patrick’s Church, from 7:15 AM to 11:45 AM. Consider joining them in
praying the rosary there.
God love you—Msgr. Ogle
DE EL PASTOR
Queridos hermanos:

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL NEWS
Our sincere thanks for your continued generosity during the 2010 Annual Catholic Appeal. As of January
19th, 2011, we have 325 pledges totaling $65,953 toward our goal of $55,455. Over $61,000 has been collected. Thanks to all who have pledged. If you have
not made a pledge, please consider doing so. All overgoal monies stay in the parish.
IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER
If you are over the age of 70 1/2, you must take a required
minimum distribution from your IRA. Normally, this money is
taxed as ordinary income. However, federal tax legislation
enacted on October 3,2008 permits you, for the remainder of
2008 and throughout 2009 to make a direct gift from your IRA
to your parish, the Annual Catholic Appeal, the Alive in Hope
Foundation, Futures in Education, or any diocesan institution
or other qualified charity. This gift counts toward fulfilling your
required minimum distribution.
JOIN THE CHOIR
The Choir is currently accepting new members. Join us
as we sing the music for our Sunday liturgies and prepare for Holy Week and Easter. Rehearsals are every
Monday night at 7:30pm in the Lower Church. All
voices are welcome.
The distribution must be from your IRA, not a 401 (k) or other
retirement plan. However, consult with your financial or tax
advisor about the possibility of transferring funds from one of
these other plans to establish an IRA, with distribution to charity coming from the newly established IRA.
PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL will meet on Tuesday, January 25th at 7:30pm in the Lourdes Room
PRAYER AND LIFE WORKSHOPS start Tuesday,
January 25th at 7:30pm in the Fatima Room
