The story of the woman brought to
Jesus for condemnation for her adultery is a familiar story. Even the
punch-line of Jesus, “Let the one without sin cast the first
stone” is also known to us. What we might overlook is the
attitude behind the scene. The adversaries of Jesus are baying for two person’s blood, first of the woman, whom they
have dragged before Jesus rather than to their experts of
law. If she was caught in the very act of adultery, then of
course her partner in crime is known. But he is not brought
for trial! Jesus is put in a ‘no-way-to-win’ situation. If he
goes along with their interpretation of Mosaic Law he will
be behind bars and finally killed for disobeying Roman law
that reserved to itself the right to pass death sentence.
The whole scene is under suspect, as the people around
Jesus do not care for the Law, for the dignity of the person
of the woman, even Justice or the wisdom of Jesus. The
delayed tactic of Jesus’ famously enigmatic writing on the
ground is bringing heat on the conscience of his adversaries. Jesus heaps on the woman the mirror image of their
own guilt and sin-ridden soul. He does not condone sin or
immoral behavior. He wants everyone to drop their stones
in clenched fist of finding others guilty, causing injury to
fellow human being and “scape-goating”! This could be
our own soul’s plight.
The challenge is personal conversion. The challenge is also
social conversion, the transformation of the world. We are
not to retreat from the world into a closet of private spirituality; rather, we ask God in this Lenten season “to help us
to embrace the world you have given us, that we may
transform the darkness of its pain into the life and joy of
Easter.” It is easy for the Christian to take a self-righteous
attitude toward the world; it is much more difficult to take
Jesus’ attitude: “Neither do I condemn you: go and do not
sin again.” All of us have contributed to the darkness of the
world; none of us can cast the first stone. Easter is on its
way. God is preparing a new world order for us:
“Remember not the events of the past, the things of long
ago consider not; see, I am doing something new!” Having
done our part to bring the darkness, will we now participate in doing something new?
We know as Christians that the most effective response to
the ills of the world is ours to make, the duty to seek justice
and equality resides with each of us. Here, in the painfully
slow changing of our own lives and in the agony of living
out our vocations as witnesses, lies the essential key to a
more decent and more human world.

PRAYER BEFORE MEALS: Bless us O Lord, and these your
gifts, which we are about to receive, from your bounty,
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Greek word for fish is "ichthys." As early as the first century,
Christians made an acrostic from this word: Iesous Christos Theou Yios Soter, i.e. Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior. Water baptism, practiced by immersion in the early church, created a parallel between fish and converts. Second-century theologian Tertullian put it this way: "we, little fishes, after the image of our Ichthys,
Jesus Christ, are born in the water."

RENGLONES RECTOS

"No escuchamos
Refiriéndose a
11:44).
