MacArthur Boulevard, Irving, Texas 75060 Phone (972)-259-3222 www.stlukeirving.org October 2008 How to pray the Rosary Como rezar el Rosario 1 The Rosary The Rosary is made up of praying twenty decades (groups of ten) of Hail Marys, each introduced by the Lord's Prayer and finished with the doxology (Glory Be). Each decade is connected with a mystery, a meditation on an important event or moment in the life of Jesus or Mary. These reflections are divided into four groups of five mysteries. The first contains joyful mysteries (recited on Mondays and Saturdays); the second, the mysteries of light or luminous mysteries (Thursdays); the third, the sorrowful mysteries (Tuesdays and Fridays); and the fourth, the glorious mysteries (Wednesdays and Sundays). To help memory, the prayers are usually counted on a string of beads. The Mysteries of the Rosary Joyful Mysteries (Mondays and Saturdays) ? The Annunciation: The angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she is to become the Mother of Jesus. Luke 1:26-38. ? The Visitation: Mary visits and helps her cousin Elizabeth. Luke 1:39-56. ? The Nativity: Mary gives birth to Jesus in a stable in Bethlehem. Luke 2:1-20. ? The Presentation in the Temple: Jesus is presented in the Temple. Luke2:21-38. ? Luke 1:46-55. ? The crowning of Our Lady Queen of Heaven: Mary is crowned Queen of heaven and earth. Revelation 12:1. The Prayers of the Rosary Apostles' Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Lord's Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed by thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. Hail Mary Hail Mary, full of grace; the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Doxology (Glory Be) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen." Hail, Holy Queen Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To You we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to You we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn the, O most gracious advocate, Your eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of Your womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet virgin Mary. Amén 5 ADULT FAITH FORMATION Election Day is approaching, and our bishops wish to remind us that, as Catholics, we are called to make decisions that are informed by our Catholic Faith. To help us, the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops has published a brief guide entitled “Faithful Citizenship.” What follows is a brief excerpt from this guide. The entire document is available free on their website (www.faithfulcitizenship.org.) in both English and Spanish. “Catholic voters should use Catholic teaching to examine candidates’ positions on issues and should consider candidates’ integrity, philosophy, and performance. It is important for all citizens ‘to see beyond party politics, to analyze campaign rhetoric critically, and to choose their political leaders according to principle, not party affiliation or mere self-interest. The following themes of Catholic social teaching provide a moral framework for decisions in public life.” #1: The Right to Life and the Dignity of the Human Person Whereby we recognize abortion, euthanasia, human cloning, and the destruction of human embryos for research, as intrinsic evils that must always be opposed. We oppose all actions that demean human life. #2: Call to Family, Community, and Participation Whereby we recognize the family, based on marriage between a man and a woman, as the fundamental unit of society, and oppose any attempt to redefine, undermine, or neglect it. #3: Rights and Responsibilities Whereby we recognize the right to life as a fundamental, universal right. Each of us also has a right to religious freedom, and a right to access those things required for a decent human life. Corresponding to these rights are responsibilities. #4: Option for the Poor and Vulnerable Whereby we recognize the biblical teaching that the basic moral test for human society is how we treat the weakest among us. #5: Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers Whereby we recognize our moral obligation to work for economic justice in labor and immigration laws. #6: Solidarity Whereby we are guided to seek the good of others out of a sense of the unity of all human beings. #7: Caring for God’s Creation. Whereby we follow through on the task given to Adam and Eve to be careful stewards of God’s creation. Liturgia de las horas para los fieles empezando el domingo 7 de septiembre: semana III. 6 Advancing the Church's Mission in Challenging Times By Dan Conway "When Jesus, having died on the cross for men, rose again from the dead, he was seen to be constituted as Lord, the Christ, and as Priest for ever, and he poured out on his disciples the Spirit promised by the Father. Henceforward the Church, endowed with the gifts of her founder and faithfully observing his precepts of charity, humility and self-denial, receives the mission of proclaiming and establishing among all peoples the kingdom of Christ and of God, and she is, on earth, the seed and the beginning of that kingdom. While she slowly grows to maturity, the Church longs for the completed kingdom and, with all her strength, hopes and desires to be united in glory with her king." (Lumen Gentium I.5) What is the Church's mission? Proclaiming the Kingdom of God and serving as the seed and beginning of that kingdom on earth. What is "advancement"? Carrying forward the Church's mission. Advancement is a process that requires leadership, the active participation of a community of faith, and resources (human, physical and financial). As I travel around the country and talk to diocesan and parish leaders, I hear lots of concerns expressed about the economy, about social issues and "culture wars" (in the Church and in society), about the environment, and about political tensions here at home and throughout the world. These are challenging times. Some days it feels like we're just treading water - having trouble making ends meet (financially) and making little or no progress in carrying out the Church's mission. How can our understanding and practice of stewardship help relieve the anxiety we feel about doing ministry in difficult times? How can stewardship principles serve as a source of hope and confidence in times of uncertainty like these? One of the first principles of Christian spirituality is that God will provide (Deus provedebat). Stewardship builds on this principle. It reminds us that God's goodness and generosity are unlimited, the source of everything that exists. As the beneficiaries of God's abundance, we are called to "receive gratefully" and "share generously" all God's gifts (material and spiritual) in confidence and hope. Trust in God's providence does not mean that we can sit by and do nothing. As stewards of creation, we are called to work tirelessly, to develop and grow God's gifts, and to "give them back with increase." It's because we trust in God's faithfulness that we refuse to be discouraged or defeated during times of adversity. As Christian stewards, we know that Christ has already achieved the victory we are fighting for. He is the source of our confidence and hope. He is the absolute assurance that God will provide! And so, we continue to carry out Christ's work. We pray as he taught us. We minister to his people in his name. We give him thanks and praise in the Eucharist, recalling his supreme sacrifice of love, and we celebrate all the sacraments with gratitude and with joy because we know that God is always with us - in good times and in bad - giving us the courage and the strength to accomplish things that we could never do alone. Stewardship is faith in action. It is what we do after we say we believe. It is practical spirituality - expressing our confidence in God's providence even when we're having trouble making ends meet or finding enough people to help carry the daily burdens of our Church's ministry. True stewardship is a work of the Holy Spirit. It is the presence and power of God active in the world, making sure that we have everything we need to proclaim the Gospel and to be "the seed and beginning of that kingdom" here and now. The Spirit gives us everything we need. Sometimes we worry that it's not enough. We need more money. We need more people, better buildings, larger program budgets. We fear we do not have what we need (or, worse, that we ourselves are not enough). That's when the Holy Spirit gently reminds us that God has already given us everything we need, and more, to be grateful - responsible - generous stewards of all creation. That's when we remember God is with us always. And that God will provide. Our job is to be grateful. To accept responsibility. To share generously out of justice and love. And to give back to God with increase. This is how Christian disciples respond to the challenges of tough times. With hope. With love. And with great joy. Please don't be discouraged in your ministry. Please don't lose heart (or hope). God will provide.
