Daniel McCaffrey generated much interest across the age spectrum of our parish. We had many, many parishioners stay after Masses to listen to the presentations on Natural Family Planning (NFP). This bodes well for our parish and seems to indicate a positive impact on the living of the Fr. Stephen vocation of marriage in our parish. Hamilton But with the mission concluded there is still work to be done. Each of must always seek to grow in trust of God’s designs and that He will be with us in all our needs. Thus moving from hearing about NFP to learning how to incorporate it into your life is a necessary next step. I hope you noticed page 5 of the weekend bulletin for November 16 & 17 (if you missed it, visit our webpage and pull up that bulletin: www.stmonicaedmond.org). That page highlighted couples in the parish who are familiar with NFP and who would be delighted to answer your questions about it. They are your friends and neighbors in the parish. They too travel this journey of entrusting their fertility to God and they can share insights about the fears and the blessings of this particular calling to walk humbly with the Lord. They can give feedback regarding the positive impact NFP has for their spiritual lives and their commitment as couples. We will continue to highlight NFP couples in the bulletin to assist you. We are also blessed to have couples in the parish who are qualified to teach NFP to you. See elsewhere in the bulletin for more information about upcoming NFP classes. Retirement Fund for Religious Support elderly religious. The next gathering is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 14, at 6:30 p.m. This month we are treating our wonderful nursery helpers to dinner. We are meeting in the parish hall. If you'd like to join us, please send an email We have entered a new liturgical year in the Church with the beginning of Advent. Don’t forget that this is a time, in stillness and quiet, to prepare oneself for the coming celebration of Christ’s birth and to prepare oneself in view of the coming judgment by our God. We will have failed in our Advent preparations if we do not make a good confession. We have three regular opportunities each and every week in our parish for that important Sacrament that renews us in our baptismal life to live totally for Jesus. Where sin keeps us from advancing in holiness, the Lord’s forgiveness awaits us in confession. Come to the encounter of His mercy! Sincerely in Christ, Rev. Stephen Hamilton Discover Natural Family Planning Celebrate God’s Vision of Human Sexuality Discover God's plan for marriage. December 1, 2013 - 7 First Sunday of Advent "Stay awake! Be prepared." The advice is clear enough. And chances are, most of us are inclined to follow this fervent instruction from the Lord. We'd like to be vigilant. We'd like to be ready. When the ultimate Advent comes-when Jesus returns-we don't want to be the one left standing alone in the field. But on its own, the desire to be alert isn't necessarily enough to keep us from drifting off into a spiritual siesta. Consider the apostles in the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus gave them a similar instruction to the one he gives today: "Keep watch" (Mt 26:38). And what happened? They fell asleep. "The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak" (26:41). How about us? Can we really stay awake? Indeed, the season of Advent pre- sents a challenge: Jesus asks us to be ready to greet him at any hour. Though our spirit may be willing, can our "flesh" pull it off? Especially in this month of holiday hustle and bustle, how can we stay constantly focused on welcoming Christ? Saint Paul gives us a hint in today's epistle: "Put on the armor of light...Put on the Lord Jesus Christ" (Rom 13:12, 14). Just as light prevents physical sleep, so too the light of Christ prevents spiritual slumber. When we invite Jesus' Spirit into our hearts, it's like keeping a vigil light flickering in the window of our souls. We may go about our business, but that expectant flame never burns out. So when Jesus comes again-even like a thief in the night-he will find us ready and waiting. Spiritual Book Club and armed with decades of research, she show the crippling effect of the contraceptive culture on our relationship with God, our marriages, and the culture at large. CDs and pamphlets are located in the kiosk on the southside of the Narthex. Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis is our discussion book for Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. in the St Michael Room. This is a book of oral literature, addressed to the English people as wartime radio broadcasts on the Christian faith delivered over the air from 1942 to 1944. Lewis seeks "to help us see the religion with fresh eyes, as a radical faith whose adherents might be likened to an underground group gathering in a war zone, a place where evil seems to have the upper hand, to hear messages of hope from the other side." (Kathleen Norris, p.xix) Future reading: Jesus of Nazareth: The Infancy Narratives by Pope Benedict XVI; The Everlasting Man by G.K. Chesterton; Not Peace but a Sword by Robert Spencer. For more information/questions, please call Ali Howard at 330-6618. Lighthouse Catholic Media The Joy of Stewardship: Time, Talent, and Treasure by Fr. John Lanzrath: How is stewardship linked with the Eucharist as a response of our faith in God for His many blessings? Father Lanzrath show is how to develop an attitude of gratitude to grow in grace, incorporate a spirituality of stewardship in every aspect of daily life, and overcome the selfishness that keeps us from recognizing God's gifts. Contraception: Cracking the Myth by Dr. Janet Smith: Professor Smith presents a God-centered view of sexuality that can bring married couples a joy that they could never have imagined. Lectors Time/Date Thomas Nichols Judith Kuczynski Kathy O’Meara Rick Hufnagel Allen family Michael Polito Tom DuChene Greeters SUNDAY, Dec. 8 Tony Blatt Need volunteer Bangasser family Tammy DuChene Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion Why do we make changes in the Mass? Some seem so small and unimportant. Are they really necessary? The celebration of the Eucharist is at the heart of our identity as Catholics. Our purpose as a church community revolves around the Eucharist. Everything we are and everything we do is measured not only by how well we celebrate, but also by how well we live the sacrament. If that is so, then we as a community will always strive to celebrate the Mass as best we can. The reasons for some changes might seem more obvious than others, but there is a reason behind each one. The "Roman Missal, Third Edition," was released in Latin in 2002. This version added numerous prayers, making it a richer source for the liturgy. Since work had already begun on translating the second edition, it was decided by the US bishops to simply jump ahead to the third edition. Its use began with the Advent season in 2011. The additional prayers honor new saints, while other prayers reach back into the ancient tradition of the church. With the new translation, we have the opportunity to better learn and understand each part of the Mass, which in turn should help us deepen our appreciation for its beauty and meaning. We will be a better church if we have a clearer understanding and knowledge of who and what we celebrate.
