Weekly Reflection
Reflexión Semanal
The First Sunday of Advent
Primer Domingo de Adviento
Today is the first of the four Sundays of Advent. Advent
comes from the Latin word adventum meaning "coming."
Jesus, the Prince of Peace, is coming and we prepare
for His arrival. Advent is about hope and expectation.
We celebrate the first date of his coming as December
25th, but we do not know the day He will come again.
How do we plan for that day? All we can do is prepare.
Prepare to be ready. Prepare to be watchful. Prepare to
be holy. Advent is a joyous season and a period of selfreflection as we consider what the coming of Christ
means for ourselves, our families, our communities and
for our world.
In the Responsorial Psalm we receive an invitation: “Let
us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord”. How do we get
there? What will we find? In our readings, we are invited to climb the mountain of the Lord’s House and receive the Lord’s instruction in the way of peace. The
alternative, war, is the way of darkness. Responding to
the darkness we must put on the armor of light, clothing
ourselves in Jesus Christ. For the way of peace, our
weapons are repurposed into instruments of cultivation.
Our swords are beaten into plowshares and our spears
into pruning hooks. With these we can harvest the
bounty of peace. When do we start this journey? Christ
tells us we must begin immediately. While we are
prompted to go on this journey together, it is an individual decision to dwell in the
Lord’s house. We must recognize there are others, some
close to us, who will choose
not to go and sadly, they will
be left behind. Show us Lord,
your love, grant us your salvation and lead us into your
house.
salvación y llévanos a tu casa.

To Restore All things in Christ
TOY DRIVE - Throughout the season of Advent, Our Lady of the Assumption School will
join in the annual parish Toy Drive. Students and their
families are asked to bring a minimum of one new, unwrapped toy to donate to needy children throughout our
area. Donations may be placed in either the collection
boxes in the church or the school. The school will do a
big kickoff for this drive on Friday, December 2. The OLA
Student Council will lead a “Stuff Mrs. Baloyo’s Car” on
that morning. Student Council members will accept the
toy donations at the front of the school between 7:30 and
8 AM, and will fill up the car of Mrs. Baloyo! Interested
parishioners and friends are invited to join in.
CHRISTMAS SHOW IS COMING! This year the OLA
School Christmas Program and Concert will take place on
Tuesday, 12/6. All students in grades K – 5 are in the
show, entitled “Shepherds, Sheep and a Savior”, which
will include a concert of wonderful Christmas
songs. There will be two performances, at 1 PM and 6:30
PM (evening show will also feature our preschoolers singing). All are invited.
Imagine what it was like in the time of
Jesus as he proclaimed the Kingdom
of God to the People of Israel and to
the Roman World. The Jewish people had a profound understanding of
what it was to belong to the God of
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. They
had the sacred scriptures and the
religious traditions and feasts to celebrate. These events reminded them
who they were and to whom they belonged. But for the
many others attracted to Jesus who came from the four
corners of the known world, the Good News of the Kingdom was entirely new and foreign to their selfunderstanding. Fortunately, the Good News of Jesus
Christ speaks to the heart and mind of all people. The
Kingdom of God is about mercy, kindness, tenderness,
compassion, and knowing that we belong to the family of
God.
As a Catholic Christian Community of Faith in Jesus
Christ at Our Lady of the Assumption, this Feast of
Christ the King rallies all of us to seek and to find Christ
in all things. “To Restore All things in Christ” was the
papal motto of Pope
St. Pius X during the
very difficult days for
the Church in the early days of the 20th
Century. Pope Pius
felt the anxiety of the
loss of faith among
the Christian people
of his day. Religious
belief was being attacked by forces that promoted materialism and secular values. Many people felt alienated
and left behind by modern ideas and “new ways” of
thinking and valuing all human life. Only through a renewal in our life in Jesus Christ was there real hope for
transformation. His emphasis on the Eucharist and its
frequent reception became a hallmark of his papacy.
“Through Christ, With Christ, and In Christ, in the unity
of the Holy Spirit, all Glory and Honor is Yours, Almighty
Father, forever and ever.” This final doxology at the end
of the Eucharistic Prayer concludes with the Great Amen
of the Church at prayer. It is our affirmation that all our
human effort is meaningless unless it is centered on the
saving mystery of the Son of God. During this time of
year we give thanks to God for family, friends, and all
our blessings. May we pray for a renewed desire for the
gift of gratitude and thankfulness and an openness to
Our God who is revealed to us as Father Creator, Son
Christ-Redeemer, and Spirit Sanctifier of Love.

Did you Know?
Make sure holiday shopping is
done safely
No matter how you handle Christmas gifts, you’re likely to
have to go to the mall with your kids during the holiday
season. In the midst of the crowds, children can easily
become separated from their parents. Be alert in crowds
and maintain awareness of what others around you are
doing. Institute the buddy system – have your kids hold
your hand or one another’s. Talk with your children about
what to do, and who to go to for help, should you become
separated. Also, it is important to give your child your cell
phone number so mall security can contact you quickly if
needed. For more information, please visit http://

de
Navidad.
