Second Sunday of Easter - Year A (Gather 954)
April 27, 2014
BELIEVING
New birth, new life, good news! These themes run throughout today’s scripture
readings. The first reading from the Acts of the Apostles describes the joyful
early days of the newly born church, when members devoted themselves to
instruction, the communal life, the breaking of bread, and the prayers. The
passage from Peter’s first letter echoes that joy, and assures those who now
believe though they never saw Jesus that their faith will lead to their salvation.
But amid all the joy, the Gospel reading calls us to sober reality. Not everyone
can believe so easily. Even an apostle can doubt this astonishing news of the
Resurrection. Across the centuries, Jesus reaches forward to touch us today:
“Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”

TODAY’S READINGS
STRENGTHENING
THE CHURCH AT HOME
First Reading — All who believed were devoted to the
teachings of the apostles, the communal life, the breaking
of the bread, and prayer (Acts 2:42-47).
Psalm — Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is
everlasting (Psalm 118).
Second Reading — God has given us an undiminished
inheritance, safeguarded for us in heaven (1 Peter 1:3-9).
Gospel — The risen Christ comes to his disciples with peace
and the Spirit. The absent Thomas doubts (John 20:19-31).

Today is Divine Mercy Sunday
How to Recite the Chaplet of Divine Mercy
The Chaplet of Mercy is recited using ordinary rosary beads of five decades.
The Chaplet is preceded by two opening prayers from the Diary
of Saint Faustina and followed by a closing prayer.
The Meaning of the Day
Clearly, Divine Mercy Sunday is not a new feast established to celebrate St. Faustina’s revelations. Indeed, it is not
primarily about St. Faustina at all — nor is it altogether a new feast! As many commentators have pointed out, The
Second Sunday of Easter was already a solemnity as the Octave Day of Easter; nevertheless, the title “Divine Mercy
Sunday” does highlight and amplify the meaning of the day. In this way, it recovers an ancient liturgical tradition,
reflected in a teaching attributed to St. Augustine about the Easter Octave, which he called “the days of mercy and
pardon,” and the Octave Day itself “the compendium of the days of mercy.”
Liturgically the Easter Octave has always been centered on the theme of Divine Mercy and forgiveness. Divine Mercy
Sunday, therefore, point us to the merciful love of God that lies behind the whole Paschal Mystery — the whole
mystery of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ — made present for us in the Eucharist. In this way, it also sums
up the whole Easter Octave. As Pope John Paul II pointed out in his Regina Caeli address on Divine Mercy Sunday,
1995: “the whole octave of Easter is like a single day,” and the Octave Sunday is meant to be the day of “thanksgiving
for the goodness God has shown to man in the whole Easter mystery.”
Given the liturgical appropriateness of the title “Divine Mercy Sunday” for the Octave Day of Easter, therefore, the
Holy See did not give this title to the Second Sunday of Easter merely as an “option,” for those dioceses who happen
to like that sort of thing! Rather, the decree issued on May 5, 2000, by the Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship
and The Discipline of the Sacraments clearly states: “the Supreme Pontiff John Paul II has graciously determined that
in the Roman Missal, after the title Second Sunday of Easter, there shall henceforth be added the appellation ‘or [that
is] Divine Mercy Sunday’…”.
Divine Mercy Sunday, therefore, is not an optional title for this solemnity; rather, Divine Mercy is the integral name
for this Feast Day. In a similar way, the Octave Day of the Nativity of Our Lord was named by the Church “The Feast
of the Mother of God.”
1. Make the Sign of the Cross
2. Optional Opening Prayers
You expired, Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls,
and the ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount
of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and
empty Yourself out upon us.
8. Repeat for the remaining decades
Saying the “Eternal Father” (6) on the “Our Father” bead
and then 10 “For the sake of His sorrowful Passion” (7) on
the following “Hail Mary” beads.
(Repeat three times)
O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus
as a fountain of Mercy for us, I trust in You!
9. Conclude with Holy God (Repeat three times)
Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have
mercy on us and on the whole world.
3. Our Father...
10. Optional Closing Prayer
Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury
of compassion — inexhaustible, look kindly upon us and
increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we
might not despair nor become despondent, but with great
confidence submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is
Love and Mercy itself. AMEN
4. Hail Mary...
5. The Apostle’s Creed...
6. In place of the Our Father
Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity
of Your Dearly Beloved Son, Our Lord, Jesus Christ, in atonement
for our sins and those of the whole world.
7. On the Ten Small Beads of Each Decade
For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on
the whole world.
End with the Sign of the Cross

¡Nuevo renacer, nueva vida, buenas noticias!

Deseo conceder gracias inimaginables a
aquellos que confían en Mi Misericordia.”
