SAIT SHARBEL MAKHLUF (1828-1898) - July 24
The convenience store owner chatted animatedly in
Arabic with coworkers, but hardly at all with his
““American”” clientele. So soon after 9/11, he probably
figured, with my accent, the less said, the better. That
changed when an ““American”” customer recognized Saint
Sharbel’’s portrait on the wall: ““So you’’re Lebanese Maronites!”” The owner was happily incredulous: ““You know
our saint?”” ““Not at first,”” the customer admitted. ““But we
help the Catholic Near East Welfare Association, and
their magazine published that picture and called Sharbel
the ‘‘Paradoxical Artisan of Peace.’’ ”” ““Everyone thinks
we’’re Muslims,”” said the owner, ““and some of my workers are. Saint Sharbel helps us live together in peace!”” A
hermit for twenty-three years, little is known of Sharbel’’s
life. He died after suffering a stroke while celebrating the
liturgy. Miracles attributed to his intercession number in
the thousands, and in war-torn Lebanon, Catholics, Orthodox, and Muslims pray together where his incorrupt body
is entombed. How lovely if after our passing, we too
could be remembered for having brought very different
people to the one God, together in peace.

LISTE
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIO
The first reading tells of the ““annunciation”” of the
birth of Isaac. It is profoundly mysterious, beginning with
the appearance of the ““three men.”” This reading illustrates
God’’s active role in our history.
The second reading treats a universal experience suffering. Paul sees suffering as the mark of discipleship.
He finds joy in the suffering he endures because it is for
the sake of the church. Through his preaching he hopes all
people will come to accept Christ.
The Gospel paints a lovely picture of Jesus at rest
among his friends. Luke has placed the incident right after
the parable of the Good Samaritan. But lest ““activism”” be
seen as the only path, we now hear Jesus’’ call to sit
quietly and listen to the word of God. We have to be like
both of the sisters. Even in our harried and noisy world,
there is an insistent call to sit back quietly and listen to

There’’s a different pace to a summer Sunday,
especially on those days when we dream of air
conditioning and wave any available paper to stir the air.
Yet we persist in gathering, even with so many breaks
from the usual routines. We distance ourselves not only
from routines, but from schedules and familiar well-worn
paths. These are playful days and contemplative days. We
see long-lost friends and visit almost-forgotten places. We
have more leisure than any people before in the history of
the world, and we need it because our lives are so careworn and tiring. More of us walk barefoot and look up at
the stars or dip our toes in the lake or sea, sing around
campfires, read novels on the beach, and eat comfort food
with our fingers. We see how beautiful life can be, and
are more aware than usual of how God is always breaking
in with signs of love.
In Genesis today, Abraham and Sarah practice
hospitality to their visitors, who turn out to be God
dropping in. During the summer months, God practices
hospitality in return, inviting us into a season of
celebration. Keeping Sunday holy is a good habit to
cultivate in these days when our spirits are especially
receptive to God’’s deep desire for us to know divine love.

visitors (Genesis 18:1-10a).
Psalm - He who does justice will live in the presence of
the Lord (Psalm 15).
Second Reading - The mystery hidden from generations
past has been manifested; it is Christ in you, the hope for

Gospel - Jesus converses with Martha and Mary about
service and contemplation (Luke 10:38-42).

Pan ukazaá siĊ Abrahamowi pod dĊbami Mamre,

porze dnia. Abraham spojrzawszy dostrzegá trzech ludzi
naprzeciw siebie. Ujrzawszy ich podąĪyá od wejĞcia do
namiotu na ich spotkanie. A oddawszy im pokáon do
ziemi, rzeká: O Panie, jeĞli darzysz mnie ĪyczliwoĞcią,
racz nie omijaü Twego sáugi! PrzyniosĊ trochĊ wody,
wy zaĞ raczcie obmyü sobie nogi, a potem odpocznijcie
pod drzewami. Ja zaĞ pójdĊ wziąü nieco chleba, abyĞcie

twoja Īona, Sara? - Odpowiedziaá im: W tym oto
namiocie. Rzeká mu [jeden z nich]: O tej porze za rok
znów wrócĊ do ciebie, twoja zaĞ Īona Sara bĊdzie
miaáa wtedy syna.

Jezus w dalszej ich podróĪy przyszedá do jednej wsi.
Tam pewna niewiasta, imieniem Marta, przyjĊáa Go do

REFLEKSJA AD CZYTAIAMI IEDZIELYMI...
Kiedy sáyszymy o apostolstwie i powoáaniu do
ĞwiĊtoĞci, przychodzą nam na myĞl mĊczennicy za
wiarĊ, wielcy kaznodzieje, asceci. Wydaje siĊ Īe Īycie
w rodzinie, zabieganie o sprawy doczesne wyklucza
apostolstwo i ĞwiĊtoĞü. Tymczasem „„potrzeba niewiele
albo tylko jednego””. ĩyjemy aktywnie, czynimy wiele,
ale nic nie powinno przesáaniaü nam Boga. Niech
jedynym powodem naszych dziaáaĔ bĊdzie miáoĞü do
Boga i bliĨniego! Relacjami ksztaátowanymi w miáoĞci,
wzajemną uwagą i troską, wreszcie dobrze wykonywaną
pracą nie tylko moĪna, ale i trzeba siĊ modliü.

ESCUCHA
La primera lectura nos habla de la ““anunciación”” del
nacimiento de Isaac. Es profundamente misterioso,
comenzando con la aparición de los ““tres hombres””. Esta
lectura ilustra la activa participación de Dios en nuestra
historia.
La segunda lectura trata de una experiencia universal:
el sufrimiento. Pablo ve el sufrimiento como la marca del
ser discípulo. Encuentra gozo en su sufrimiento porque es
por el bien de la Iglesia. Con su predicación espera que
todo el mundo acepte a Cristo.
El Evangelio pinta un hermoso cuadro de Jesús
descansando con sus amigos. Lucas ha colocado este
incidente exactamente después de la parábola del Buen
Samaritano. Pero a no ser que veamos el ““activismo””
como el único sendero, oímos ahora a Jesús que nos invita
a sentarnos tranquilamente a escuchar la Palabra de Dios.
Tenemos que ser como ambas hermanas. Aún en nuestro
agitado y ruidoso mundo, hay un insistente llamado a
sentarnos tranquilamente a escuchar a Jesús.

ha escogido la mejor parte (Lucas 10:38-42).
TRADICIOES DE UESTRA FE
América es un continente nacido del mestizaje que
tomó a los europeos, los indígenas y los africanos para
engendrar algo nuevo. Normalmente pensamos en el
mestizaje de sangre que produjo nuevas razas
latinoamericanas. Pero también existe el mestizaje
cultural que produce nuevos elementos latinoamericanos.
Uno de estos es el sarape, hijo de la tilma pre-colombina
y el manto español. Este mestizaje en tela tiene sus
principios en el siglo XVIII con una proliferación de
talleres en Zacatecas, Saltillo y otros lugares. Esta cobija
colorida, de algodón o lana, fue desarrollada para añadir
color y belleza a los charros de siglos pasados.
A través de la historia el sarape ha sido usado por
vaqueros, jinetes, soldados y revolucionarios. Hoy día el
sarape, jorongo, frazada, gabán o cobija se ha convertido
en símbolo de tradición mexicana y se encuentra
decorando hogares, restaurantes e iglesias. México no es
el único país que ha desarrollado un mestizaje en tela,
también Guatemala, Colombia, El Salvador y otros más
tienen sus telas y tapetes particulares que mezclan los
colores y los diseños para celebrar el talento y la
creatividad del mestizaje latinoamericano.
