Madrid, 1936 In this work, which forms both part of a series and of the permanent collection of the Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the painter from Madrid alludes to the original painting by Cézanne. Alcaín does so by erasing the stamp, the human brushstroke so characteristic of the Frenchman, thereby lending the painting the automatism normally associated with the Pop movement, upon which he is definitely an influence. The painter, who studied at the Madrid School of Fine Art, specialised in painting still lifes and depicting the urban reality of his native city. We are talking about apricots, peaches and plums, the most commonly found contents of the fruit bowls of our childhood around the beginning of summer. It is no coincidence that, etymologically speaking, the Spanish word for apricot, ‘albaricoque’, comes from the Latin ‘ad primus coctum’ (‘the first to flower’). This is also the root of the French and English name for the fruit, ‘apricot’, a word that reproduces the acrostic of the Latin definition. J Apricots, plums and peaches all form part of the rosaceous family, which is made up of more than two thousand species of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants of different origin distributed across the entire planet. Plum trees originally came from the Caucasus, Turkey and Iran; although currently the main producing countries are Argentina, Chile and South Africa. The principal plum growing area in Spain is Aragon, Lerida and Seville. Apricots and peaches originally came from China. The peach was used as a decorative motif on Chinese porcelain as it was considered to be a symbol of long life and immortality. Like so many other things, the velvet-skinned peach travelled from China to Persia (Iran), probably along the Silk Road, where it soon established itself as that country’s most emblematic fruit. It was later taken to the New World by Columbus, where it became known as the ‘durazno’. Nowadays, the peach tree can be found growing all over the world. Geographically speaking, the apricot is a more localised fruit, with Turkey, Sweden, Greece and Spain being the countries where it is mainly cultivated. Here in Spain, it was the Arabs who spread the cultivation of the apricot along the entire length of the Mediterranean coastline and whose name for the fruit, ‘El-barquq’, is Los nutritivos albaricoques root for the modern Spanish fueron introducidos en la franja the word ‘albaricoque’. The part of Catalonia through which the Ebro flows around Calanda actually boasts an ‘appellation d’origine’ for its peaches. This was awarded in 1950 in acknowledgement of the local custom of individually wrapping the young fruit in waxed paper whilst on the tree in order to protect it from disease and pesticides, thus giving the fruit its classic golden colour. These peaches are available on the market for up to three months longer than their competitors. Peaches, plums and apricots are the perfect fruit to be eaten fresh, although once they are fully ripe they can be used to make preserves, ice cream, fruit shakes and sauces. Plums must be picked by hand, with every effort being made to ensure that their natural wax coating remains intact, although those plums to be used to make preserves can be harvested before they are fully ripe. Apricots are one of the most delicate of fruits, 64 Geográficamente, el albaricoque se encuentra más localizado: Turquía, Suecia, Grecia y España son su patria chica.
