St. Joseph Church……………..……………….…….Fourth Sunday of Advent …………..……………December 19, 2010
Pastor’s Column
La Columna del Padre
My dear people of Saint Joseph Parish,
Last weekend in the midst of the 3rd Sunday of
Advent, we also celebrated Our Lady of
Guadalupe. On Saturday evening, there was a
wonderful reenactment in the church of the story
of Our Lady’s appearance to Juan Diego. I am
deeply grateful to those who made this beautiful
presentation possible. I am so proud of you!
Your work presented us with the reality of
Advent. In Our Lady’s appearances to Juan
Diego she says, “Know and understand well …
that I am the ever Virgin Holy Mary, Mother of
the True God.” Indeed she is. For in the image,
Mary is pregnant with the Christ Child. Juan
Diego so stressed in his testimony to people that
Mary was the Mother of the True God, there was
a flood of conversions and millions of people
clamored for faith formation and Baptism. Juan
Diego wanted to do the will of God and his life
made a world of difference for all of us.
In today’s Gospel, we hear about how Saint
Joseph is obedient to the will of God. He
discovers that Mary is with child, and he plans to
divorce her in spite of disappointment and
heartbreak. Then Joseph has a dream. The
contents of his dream are very clear. He is not to
be afraid to take Mary as his wife and he is to
name the son “Jesus” (meaning “God saves). The
dream changed his perspective from doubt and
disappointment to wonder and delight. In this
brief passage, we catch a glimpse of Joseph to be
a righteous man, a good husband, a protective
father, caregiver, honest, faithful, and wise. And
there is the key verse in Joseph’s life: “He did as
the angel of the Lord commanded him.”
In this fourth and final week of Advent, may the
Lord work within us to make us faithful and
obedient to His voice that we may be more fully
prepared to celebrate the mystery of the
Incarnation. May our Advent journey bring us to
a holy and blessed feast of Christmas!
hombre justo, buen esposo, padre protector, hombre
compasivo, honesto, fiel y sabio.
