One of the great differences between a parish of European Catholics and Mexican Catholics has to do
with the celebration of Christmas. In a European
Catholic parish, the churches are packed with people
who come to Church just that day, while a Mexican
Catholic church often has many fewer people than at
a regular Sunday Mass. Come join us at Mass this
Christmas and celebrate the birth of Our Savior in
the beautiful way that is Mass! Come on Christmas
Eve or Christmas Day or Evening. What a wonderful
custom to start in your family this year if you have
not already done so.
Una de las grandes diferencias entre una parroquia
de católicos europeos y católicos mexicanos tiene
que ver con la celebración de la Navidad. En una
parroquia católica europea, las iglesias están llenas de
personas que asisten a misa solo ese día, mientras
que una iglesia católica mexicana a menudo tiene
menos personas que en misa dominical. ¡Ven y únete a
nosotros en Misa en esta Navidad y celebra el nacimiento
de Nuestro Salvador de la manera hermosa que es la
Misa! Vengan en la Nochebuena o el Día de Navidad o
por la noche. ¡Qué maravillosa costumbre para
iniciar con su familia este año si aun no lo ha hecho.

We just held a little service of confession yesterday,
Saturday the 20th of December. We have no
planned times for confession until Saturday,
December 27th. If you find you need confession,
you can call us for an appointment, but make sure
that you reach us before Wednesday morning,
because with all the Christmas office closings it may
be hard to reach us after that.
No acabamos de celebrar un pequeño servicio de la
confesión ayer, sábado 20 de diciembre. No tenemos
horarios previstos para la confesión hasta el sábado,
27 de diciembre. Si usted encuentra que necesita de
confesión, nos puede llamar para hacer una cita,
pero asegure comunicarse con nosotros antes de la
mañana del miércoles, ya que la oficina cerrará para
la Navidad y puede ser difícil lograr comunicarse con
nosotros después de eso.

The Stations of the Birth of Christ
From Advent until February 2nd (The Purification in the
Temple 40 days after the birth of Christ) our church will
celebrate the 14 stations of the Birth of Christ. The stations
will be in the church and the guides will be in a container on
the altar rail. Please use them to pray the stations, then
return them to their container so that another person can
use them. May these stations help us to remember those
very special moments in the life of Christ.

Las Estaciones del Nacimiento de Cristo
Del Adviento) hasta el 2 de febrero (La Candelaria - la
Purificación en el templo a los 40 días del nacimiento de Cristo)
nuestra parroquia va a celebrar las 14 estaciones del Nacimiento
de Cristo. Las estaciones estarán en la iglesia y los guías para
hacerlas estarán en una cajita sobre la bardita del altar. Por
favor úsenlas para orar las estaciones, y luego regrésenlas a
su cajita para que otros puedan usarlas también. ¡Qué estas
estaciones nos ayuden a recordar aquellos momentos tan
especiales en la vida de Cristo!

REUNIONES
Conociendo la Biblia—El Grupo C.E.R.S. los
invita a estudiar temas bíblicos los jueves de 7:15
a 9pm en Salón Tepeyac.
El programa Fe en Acción brinda clases educativas
y gratuitas en nuestra parroquia sobre los tipos de
cáncer, su prevención y recursos en la comunidad.
Se reúnen los jueves de 6 a 8pm en Salón Tepeyac.
El Grupo de Matrimonios los invita todos los
lunes de 7pm a 9pm a sus alabanzas, oración,
meditación de la lectura del día y también
reflexión. Todo es familiar. Hay cuidado de niños
y jóvenes en el salón parroquial. Los esperamos.

Grupo de jóvenes adultos (18-30 años) - Se reúne
cada domingo de las 6PM en Casa Loyola. Ven a

Our Lady of Guadalupe - a Mexican National Parish
When La Purísima Mission was established in 1917, it
was to help serve the many Mexican immigrants in
Logan Heights. When it became a parish in the early
1920's, it was given a broader mission and became a
Mexican National Parish. That title means that it was
supposed to serve anyone born in Mexico or their
children no matter where they lived in the area. It had
to make sure that it had sufficient Masses in Spanish
and programs in Spanish for catechism and baptism. Anyone who showed up at the door and was
from Mexico had a right to the programs here at Guadalupe. It continued to be a Mexican National Parish
until just a few years ago. When Bishop Buddy, the
first Bishop of San Diego, decided that the Augustinian
Recollects should leave his diocese, he asked around
and was directed to a Jesuit priest from Chihuahua
who was working in a parish in El Paso. Bishop Buddy
brought him here and the Jesuit period of Our Lady of
Guadalupe Parish began. Fr. Benjamin Silva, became
pastor and began his service at the Feast of Our Lady
of Guadalupe in 1940. If you have any memories of
Fr. Benjamin Silva, please contact Fr. John with what
you remember of him!
Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe
Parroquia Nacional Mexicana
Cuando La Misión de la Purísima fue establecida en
1917, fue para ayudar a servir a los muchos inmigrantes mexicanos en Logan Heights. Cuando se hizo
una parroquia en la década de 1920, se le dio una
misión más amplia y se convirtió en una Parroquia
Nacional Mexicana. Ese título significa que debía
servir a cualquier persona nacida en México o sus hijos no importa donde vivían en la zona. Tenía que
asegurarse de que tenía suficientes misas y programas
en español de catequesis y bautismo. Cualquier persona que se presentaba en la puerta que era de México
tenía derecho a los programas aquí en Guadalupe.
Continuó siendo una Parroquia Nacional Mexicano
hasta hace apenas unos años. Cuando el Obispo Buddy, el primer Obispo de San Diego, decidió que los
Agustinos Recoletos debían dejar la diócesis, consultó
y se dirigió a un sacerdote jesuita de Chihuahua que
estaba trabajando en una parroquia de El Paso. El
Obispo Buddy lo trajo aquí y comenzó el período de
los jesuitas en Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. El Padre
Benjamín Silva, se convirtió en pastor y comenzó su
servicio el Día de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de
1940. Si tiene algún recuerdo del P. Benjamín Silva,
por favor póngase en contacto con el Padre John con
lo que recuerda de él!

ALL SCHOOL—To the delight of all, Santa
Claus stopped for a visit this week at Our
Lady's School. Parking his reindeer on the roof
of South Campus, he came and visited with all
the students there reminding them to be good
and wishing them a Merry Christmas. Then he continued his
journey to North Campus where he met with students and
reminded them to study hard!
North Campus students had the pleasure of meeting State
Senator Ben Hueso, a graduate from Our Lady's School.
Senator Hueso spoke briefly with students about the work of
the state legislature. Then he introduced a friend of his, Mr.
Clifford LaChappa, chairman of the Mission Indian Tribal
Council. To the surprise of our students, Mr. LaChappa
presented the school with a $5,000 donation from the Barona
Casino and the Mission Indian Tribe. These funds will be used
to purchase and upgrade some of our computers.
TODA LA ESCUELA—Para el deleite de todos, Santa Claus
vino de visita esta semana en Escuela de Nuestra Señora.
Estacionó sus renos en la azotea del Campo Sur, visitó a todos
los estudiantes allí recordandoles que sean buenos y
deseándoles una Feliz Navidad. Luego continuó su viaje al
Campo Norte, donde se reunió con los estudiantes y les
recordó que estudiar mucho!
Los estudiantes del Campo Norte tuvieron el placer de
conocer el senador estatal Ben Hueso, un graduado de la
Escuela de Nuestra Señora. El Senador Hueso habló brevemente con los estudiantes sobre el trabajo de la legislatura
estatal. Luego presentó a un amigo suyo, el Sr. Clifford LaChappa, presidente de la Misión del Consejo Tribal Indígena.
Para sorpresa de nuestros estudiantes, el Sr. LaChappa
presentó a la escuela con una donación de $ 5,000 del Casino
Barona y la Tribu Indígena Misión. Estos fondos se utilizarán
para comprar y actualizar algunos de nuestras computadoras.
