Hydrodynamics and sediment dynamics in the near vicinity of a submarine cable connecting Ilha Grande Island and the continent in Brazil. LUZ MARÍA GARCÍA GARCÍA M.Sc. Thesis: 159 pages Abstract: In this study a three dimensional numerical model was developed to reproduce the hydrodynamic conditions in the vicinity of a submarine cable. The cable connects Ilha Grande island, in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro, and the continent. The Delft 3D modelling system developed by Delft Hydraulics in The Netherlands was employed to carry out the simulations. Different open sea boundary condition approaches were tested. Sensitivity analyses with respect to the physical and numerical parameters led to the main model settings. Due to the specific location of the submarine cable in a channel connecting two water bodies with different thermohaline properties, the investigation of the importance of density driven currents was also carried out. Furthermore the importance of the wind on the currents was also verified. Despite of the lack of adequate field measurements, the ability of the model to reproduce the observed water levels and current velocities in the area resulted to be reasonably good. The standard deviations of the residuals ("model results-measurements") regarding water levels were in general under 20 cm. With respect to the phase lags, the standard deviations of the residuals resulted usually below 70 min. The current velocities were reproduced according to the values usually observed in the field. The stability of the bed material in the vicinity of the cable was investigated for different conditions. It was found that even under extreme wind conditions, the critical values of shear stresses were not exceeded in the region of the submarine cable.
