The Pastor’s Keyboard - Msgr. Richard Huneger
I've heard it in the past, but this year, more so than ever before: "I don't know what to do
about voting." The problem arises from the fact that no candidate, no party platform, exactly
matches one's own well-formed conscience. The "perfect" candidate or party does not exist or is
not among the choices one can make. What to do? One traditional rule of thumb is that in a democracy, whoever abstains from voting is presumed to agree with whatever the majority of those
who do vote, decide upon. A second consideration is that as citizens we do have an obligation to
do what we can to contribute to the common good, to be salt to the earth. Third, by casting a vote
for who or what will have the longest lasting effects for the things that we consider most critical for
societal good, while minimizing harm along the way, we have made a statement, even if, this time
around, we weren't in the majority: others who believe as we do will be strengthened by that fact
alone. Fourth, despite appearances and promises, experience teaches us that we will have to put
up with a lot of shortcomings, empty grandstanding, and reversals, no matter what the outcome of
an election: disappointment is a fact of life. Often enough a strange combination is produced by
means of the collective electorate's actions, as a result of which only gridlock can take place.
On November 18, 1965, Pope Paul VI promulgated the Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity (Apostolicam Actuositatem). It gives us perspective. Jesus was the "apostle" (the "one sent on
mission") of the Father. We who are members of his body by baptism share in that mission by
confirmation. We are asked to help him in his role as prophet, priest, and king, to spread the reign
of Christ across the face of the earth to the glory of God the Father, so that all can share in Christ's
saving redemption, and so that through those who do, the whole world might be brought into right
relationship with Christ. This involves the renewal of the whole temporal order. And while we have
a foot in both worlds, as it were, of the spiritual and temporal, in both orders, being simultaneously
believers and citizens, we must be continuously led by one and the same Christian conscience.
That we must bring to the table wherever we can.
We can't get our way, all the time, or even our "whole" way, perhaps even ever, given the problem of "many wills" in the wounded human condition. But we still have a compass guiding us, helping us assess things, as they swerve left or right of the center line in the road of life. There is a
repeated need for all of us to help each other figure out what is happening and why and how to get
back on track. Youthful idealism is often represented as "Fools rush in where angels fear to tread."
Utopian projects eventually stall, with bloody wakes. There are moments when the folly and suffering in the world wash over us in waves of "Weltschmertz" (the agony of realizing how flawed is the
fabric of life, and how far from being up to the task of fixing it all, that we are).
In many ways the humble yarmulke (yahr'-mul-kuh) can help us out. It is the little "beanie" or
"skull cap" that you see Orthodox Jewish men wear in public, and Jewish men in general during
prayer. Catholic clergy may also wear such a skull cap, called a zuchetto (black for a priest, purple
for a bishop, red for a cardinal, and white for the pope). Alas, the mundane origin of the zuchetto
was to keep the top of the head warm, after tonsure (when a ring of hair was clipped off as a sign
of embracing celibacy). But let's pretend it can also symbolize the same thing as the yarmulke
(Yiddish, for "fear" [ya'ar] of the "king" [mulka]). That is, the yarmulke is worn to show that one
reverences God as the "highest," as King. No matter how tall I am or smart I am, there's
"something, someone, above me, above my intellect: the infinite Wisdom of God." And that something exercises a critical function in monitoring where we're going, and what corrective action is
needed to keep us on track toward goal.
Jesus said to give to God what is God's, and to Caesar what is Caesar's. Early Christians were
very clear: adore God; respect the Emperor. When push comes to shove, "We must obey God
rather than men, whose authority is from God." That is, there is something divine, divinely willed, in
the emergence of societal authority to protect life, promote social order, enable communication
and cooperation, and so on. As long as human authority stays true to its purpose, we can flourish.
Even though Christians were at first largely despised, they blessed God for what social order there
was in the Empire, to enable them to fulfill the Great Commission of bringing the Word of the Gospel to others: changing the world from the inside out, becoming the soul to the body politic, so that
bit by bit all might enter into a right relationship with Christ.
