A KNOT IN THE SHEET
UN NUDO EN LA SÁBANA
At a meeting of parents, the Director highlighted the support
that parents should give their children. She also asked they
give them as much of their time as possible. She understood
that although most parents were community workers, they
should find time to devote and understand their children.
However, the director was surprised when one parent stood
up and explained that he had no time to talk with his son
during the week.
When he went to work it was very early and his son was still
sleeping.
When he came home from work it was too late and the child
was no longer awake.
He further explained that he had to work that way to support
his family. He also said that not having time for his son
distressed him and he tried to redeem himself by going to kiss
him every night when he arrived home and, so that his son
knew of his presence, he made a knot at the tip of the sheet.
That happened religiously every night when he went to kiss
him.
When the child awoke and saw the knot, he knew his father
had been there and kissed him. The knot was their means of
communication.
The director was thrilled with this unique story and was even
more surprised when she realized that the son of that father
was one of the best students in the school.
That fact makes us reflect on the many ways that people can
be present and communicate with others.
One father found his technique, which was simple but
efficient. And most importantly his son understood, through
the emotional knot, what his father was saying.
Sometimes we are so concerned with how to say things that
we forget the main thing is communication through feeling.
Simple details like a kiss and a knot on top of a sheet, meant
for one child, much more than gifts or empty apologies.
It is true that we care for people but more importantly is that
they know and can feel it.
For there to be communication, it is necessary that people
"hear" the language of our heart, for, in terms of affection,
feelings always speak louder than words.
It is for this reason that a hug or a kiss, clad in the purest
affection, cures headache, the scrape on the knee, the fear of
the dark.
People may not understand the meaning of many words, but
know how to express a gesture of love, even if the gesture is
only one knot. A knot filled with love and affection.
Live your life so that when your loved ones think of fairness,
caring, love and integrity ... think of you.
