LAY MINISTRY SUNDAY - MARCH 2, 2014
Since 2011, Lay Ministry Sunday has been celebrated in the
Brooklyn Diocese on the Sunday preceding Ash Wednesday as a
way to publically celebrate God’s call to all the baptized to use
their gifts in service to others and to the Church. Resources to
assist parishes in acknowledging both the sanctity of God’s call and
the generous response of lay persons in ministry are available on the
Pastoral Institute website. Please speak to your Pastors or
Administrators about how your parishes can take part in
celebrating the many ways that lay persons enrich parish life.
Please also plan on joining us and your colleagues in ministry at
4:30 PM on March 2nd at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs in
Forest Hills for solemn evening vespers celebrated by Bishop
Octavio Cisneros. Dr. Frank Villaronga, Chairperson of the
National Association for Lay Ministry and Director of Evangelization
and Ministry Formation for the Diocese of Charlotte, will give a
bilingual (English/Spanish) presentation relating the role of the laity
in serving the mission for a new evangelization. A light reception
will follow. Perhaps you could organize a group from your parish
to attend this day of prayer, reflection and socializing. The program
is open to all involved in ministry, not just commissioned lay
pastoral leaders. More information and a registration form are
available on our website.
While Lay Ministry Sunday is intended to celebrate the great work
being performed by all of the laity who serve parishes in a variety
of pastoral roles, it is also a time to begin recruiting new
candidates for the three-year Lay Ministry Program for classes
beginning next September. We are counting on you to
encourage others to consider applying for the Lay Ministry
Program after speaking to their Pastor or Administrator. An
“Inquiry Flyer” is also posted on our website.
The Pastoral Institute thanks each and every one of our alumni for
all that you do to promote lay ministry and to minister to the
people of our diocese.
DOMINGO DEL MINISTERIO LAICO – 2 DE MARZO 2014
Desde 2011, el Domingo del Ministerio Laico se ha celebrado
en la diócesis de Brooklyn el domingo anterior del Miércoles de
Ceniza como una forma de celebrar públicamente la llamada de Dios
a todos los bautizados para usar sus dones en el servicio a los
demás y a la Iglesia. Recursos para ayudar a las parroquias a
reconocer tanto la santidad de la llamada de Dios como la generosa
respuesta de laicos en el Ministerio están disponibles en la página
web del Instituto Pastoral. Por favor, hable con su párroco o
administrador acerca de cómo su parroquia puede tomar parte en

Hace poco el Instituto Pastoral
tuvo la oportunidad de
entrevistar a un líder pastoral
laico recién comisionado.
Nuestro deseo es que esta
historia personal le recuerde de
la emoción que usted sintió al
ser comisionado y que le anime a
renovar su visión para el
ministerio en el año 2014.

Clase de 2013, Ministerio de
RICA.
IP: ¿Hubo cambios en su vida
a raíz de su formación en el
Programa de Ministerio
Laico?
DB: Los cambios en mi vida
fueron muchos a nivel personal,
intelectual, emocional y social,
sobre todo en lo espiritual y
religioso; he salido de los viejos
esquemas y entiendo muy bien
que es lo que nos pide la Nueva
Evangelización.
IP: ¿En qué momento
empezó a notar estos
cambios?
DB: Durante cada semestre los
cambios en mí vida fueron
notorios; cada tema iba
enriqueciéndome y afianzando
mis necesidades como Laico,
también sentía el impulso para
continuar. En la etapa de
discernimiento y la práctica
supervisada comprobé aquellos
cambios. A medida que iba
aprendiendo sentía más
compromiso hacia las personas
que tenía a mi cargo y empecé
a acercarme más a ellas para
hacerles sentir el amor de Dios
a través de lo que yo les
transmitía y algo muy especial
fue hacerles ver su dignidad y
cuan importantes son para
Dios.
IP: Después de ser
comisionada ¿qué frutos ha
observado?
DB: Los frutos que estoy
viendo son la dedicación, el
entusiasmo y sobre todo la
participación comunitaria que
muestran los nuevos
bautizados a quienes yo tuve la
gracia de guiar en el proceso
RICA.
IP: ¿En su vida Espiritual
que sucedió? ¿Creció su
relación con Dios?, ¿se
afianzó en la fe?
DB: Mi vida Espiritual fue
transformada de manera que
me sentí verdaderamente
amada y guiada por Dios, con
un deseo enorme por servirle
y hacer que todos lo conozcan,
le amen y le sirvan. También
afiancé mi disciplina de oración
y contemplación; algo muy
importante también: el mirar a
los demás con misericordia sin
mirar raza, estatus, o creencia.
Mi fe se fortaleció hasta el
punto de contar con Dios en
cada momento de mi vida.
IP: ¿Se concientizó
acerca de cómo transmitir
la fe a otros?
DB: En cuanto a transmitir la
fe a otros tengo claro que la
mejor catequesis es mi buen
ejemplo; por eso me preocupo
de cuidar mi vida cristiana.\
IP: A través de su
liderazgo adquirido
mediante la formación
recibida en el Instituto,
¿cuál ha sido su aporte en
su parroquia?
DB: Mi aporte específico en
este momento a la parroquia,
es en el ministerio RICA junto
con la coordinadora,
programar y ejecutar todas las
actividades que cada semana
realizamos con los
catecúmenos.
IP: ¿Cómo era antes su
desempeño ministerial?
¿Cómo se siente ahora?
DB: Antes mi desempeño
ministerial era de
responsabilidad y seriedad.
Ahora le agregué un
ingrediente más y es la

conozcan y lo vivan.

EN TEOLOGÍA
El Instituto Pastoral y la Oficina
de Formación de Fe
copatrocinan el Programa de
Becas para la Maestria en
Teologia (M. A. Scholarship
Program in Theology). Este
programa prepara a personas
para servir como líderes
catequéticos, Asociados
Pastorales o para otros papeles
de liderazgo en una parroquia
o en una agencia en la Diócesis
de Brooklyn. El proceso

FROM THE HEART OF PARISH MINISTRY
Not too long ago, the Pastoral
Institute had the opportunity to
interview a recent commissioned
lay pastoral leader. It is our hope
that this personal story reminds
you of the excitement you felt
after your own commissioning
and encourages you to renew
your vision for ministry in 2014.
Interview with Dora Bautista,
Class of 2013. Home parish:
Blessed Sacrament, Jackson
Heights.
PI: Were there changes in
your life as a result of your
formation in the Lay Ministry
Program?
DB: The changes in my life were
many: personal, intellectual,
emotional and social, but
especially in the spiritual and
religious level. I have left behind
old patterns of behavior and now
understand perfectly well what
the New Evangelization requires
of us.
PI: At that point did you
begin to notice these
changes?
DB: During each semester the
changes in my life were
undeniable; each topic studied
would enrich and reinforce my
needs as a layperson. I also felt a
driving power to continue.
During the discernment and
supervised practicum stage of
formation, those changes came
to fruition. The more I learned,
the more committed I felt
towards the people I was
responsible for. I began to get
closer to them to make them
feel the love of God through
what I conveyed to them. It
was so special to be able to
help them to see their dignity
and how important they are to
God.
PI: After being
commissioned, what fruits
have you observed?
DB: The fruits that I am seeing
are: dedication, enthusiasm, and
most of all the participation in
the parish community by the
newly baptized whom I had the
grace to guide in the RCIA
process.
PI: What happened in your
spiritual life? Did your
relationship with God
grow? Was your faith
strengthened?
DB: My spiritual life was
transformed to the point that I
felt truly loved and guided by
God, with an enormous desire
to serve him and help others to
know, love and serve him. I
also became more disciplined in
my time for prayer and
contemplation. Another
important thing, I began to look
at others with mercy-
regardless of race, status, or
belief. My faith was
strengthened to the point of
counting on God every
moment of my life.
PI: Was your awareness
raised on how to transmit
the faith to others?
DB: With regard to
transmitting the faith to others,
it became very clear to me that
the best catechesis is my own
good example. That is why I
take care to nurture my
Christian life.
PI: What has been your
contribution to the parish
with the leadership training
acquired during your
formation in the Institute?
DB: At this time my specific
contribution in the parish is in
the RCIA ministry. Together
with the Coordinator, I help to
schedule and carry out the
activities that we plan for the
catechumens each week.
PI: What was your ministry
performance like before?
How is it now?
DB: Before I was focused on
ministering in a responsible and
serious manner. Now I added
another ingredient, which is
Passion for the Gospel with a
great desire that many will
know and live it!

The Pastoral Institute and the

cosponsor the M. A. Scholarship
Program in Theology. This
program prepares persons to
serve as Catechetical Leaders,
Pastoral Associates, or in other
leadership roles in a parish or
agency in the Diocese of
Brooklyn. The application
process begins in February and
interested candidates must
complete a Statement of

La Asociación Nacional para

Recently, the Pastoral Institute
has begun recruiting alumni and

liaisons with the parishes. So far

role. The hope is to eventually

Institute by advocating for lay
ministry formation with the
pastor and parish staff as well as
promoting the continuing
