Nació en 1933 en Rotterdam, Holanda y llegó a México en 1958, donde
se forjó una profesión como fotógrafo y formó a su familia. Su trabajo
profesional ha estado estrechamente ligado al campo de la edición
de libros de arte y catálogos, así como a la divulgación del patrimonio
cultural mexicano. A lo largo de una carrera de más de 50 años,
su trabajo se ha publicado en más de 53 libros, catálogos y cd-roms,
así como en numerosas revistas. Como autor, ha tenido siete
exhibiciones individuales, presentadas en Suiza, México y Venezuela.
Born in 1933 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, he arrived to Mexico
in 1958, where he established himself as a photographer and formed
a family. His professional work has been closely related to the field
of art books and catalogues, as well as to the promotion of Mexican
Cultural Heritage. During his career of over 50 years, his work
has been published in more than 53 books, catalogues and cd-roms,
as well as in many magazines. He has had seven solo exhibitions
as an author, showed in Switzerland, Mexico and Venezuela.

Transmitir diferentes sensaciones y al mismo tiempo encontrar un
sentido de identidad que lo aproxime a sus raíces holandesas, es lo
que Bob nos muestra en estas imágenes. Más que una geografía, sus
fotografías comunican un estado de cambio, un constante fluir de
la realidad. Transitar por las diferentes formas y espacios del agua,
por los seres que la habitan, es apenas una pequeña selección del
material que Schalkwijk ha capturado en su recorrer por el mundo.
In these images, Bob Schalwijk conveys different sensations and,
at the same time, he finds a sense of identity with his Dutch roots.
More than geographic locations, his photographs communicate a
state of change, a constant flow of reality. Taking us through the
different shapes and spaces of water and the beings that inhabit them,
Schalkwijk shows us only a small selection of the material that he has
captured on his world tour.

Los sismos del 19 y 20 de septiembre de 1985 marcaron profundamente
la historia de la ciudad de México; tan sólo en la colonia Roma, barrio
donde se ubica el centro urbano conocido como Multifamiliares Juárez,
el periódico Novedades reportó 1,500 muertos. Considerados en su momento
como la más acabada obra de integración plástica, por los decorados
de Carlos Mérida, sus edificios altos resultaron severamente dañados por
los sismos; bajo la mirada de Schalkwijk sus restos son el testimonio
de una ciudad fracturada, colapsada, una ciudad que después de la tragedia
ya no sería la misma.
The earthquakes of the 19th and 20th September, 1985, profoundly marked
the history of Mexico City. In the Colonia Roma alone, in the neighborhood
of the urban complex Multifamiliares Juárez, the newspaper Novedades
reported 1,500 deaths. Because of Carlos Mérida’s decorative art on their
facades, the Multifamiliares Juárez had been considered the finest
artistically integrated architectural work of its time. Its tallest buildings
were severely damaged by the earthquakes. In Shalkwijk’s view, we see these
remains as the testimony of a fractured city, a collapsed city, a city that
would never be the same again after the tragedy of 1985.

El diálogo fotográfico es cruzado entre el que mira y lo que es mirado.
La sorpresa es mutua en todo caso… La belleza del paisaje estriba
en las maneras en que el artista impone una visión y un estilo propios.
Recortados contra el cielo, la geometría abstracta que Bob Schalkwijk
encuentra, nos muestra detalles de seres, que parecen descender
de las nubes hacia el paisaje agreste. Estos cactus seducen, invierten
nuestra idea de la verticalidad y hay en ellos una expresión y un espíritu
que muestran el enamoramiento del autor por los fragmentos paisajísticos.
The photographic dialogue crosses between those who view and what
is viewed. In any case, the surprise is mutual… The beauty of the landscape
stems from the way in which the artist imposes his own style and vision.
Outlined against the sky, the abstract geometry that Bob Schalkwijk
encounters shows us details of beings that appear to have descended
from the clouds to the rugged landscape. These cacti seduce, they invert
our idea of verticality, and there is an expression and a spirit within
them that shows us his love affair with the fragments of landscapes.

Caminante incansable de los diversos territorios que conforman el mosaico
cultural mexicano, a lo largo de trece años Bob Schalkwijk mantuvo
una cercana relación con la Sierra Tarahumara. De 1965 a 1978, recorrió
sus caminos y convivió con sus habitantes, los Rarámuris; asistió
a sus festejos, cruzó a caballo y a pie de un pueblo a otro y especialmente,
admiró esta singular geografía de la Sierra Madre Occidente, para crear
un archivo de más de 7,000 fotografías.
An untiring walker through the diverse territories that make up the cultural
mosaic of Mexico, Bob Schalkwijk maintained a close relationship with
the Sierra Tarahumara for some thirteen years. From 1965 to 1978 he walked
its paths and lived among its inhabitants, the Rarámuri, and attended
their festivals. He walked and rode on horseback from one village
to another, and he admired the unique geography of the Western Sierra
Madre. On these journeys he created an archive of more than 7,000
photographs.
