Caring for Your New Tree
Young trees are vulnerable for several years after planting.
Follow these tips for the first 3 years to establish a strong
root system and grow a healthy tree.
Water
BOTH UNDER- & OVER- WATERING CAN KILL YOUR TREE.
Here is a rough schedule for watering during the first 3 years:
(Leave a trickling hose at the base of the trunk for 30 min.)
• April-May: once every 2 weeks
• June-August: once each week
• September-October: once every 2 weeks
• October-March: once a month during times when the
temperature is over 50 degrees

Because each site is different and weather conditions vary, it is
important to Check Your Soil Moisture between waterings:
1. Dig up soil 3-8 inches below the surface, just outside of
the root area.
2. Roll the soil between your fingers to form a small ball.
3. If the ball crumbles apart, water immediately. If the soil
sticks together, hold off and check back later.

Mulch

Keep mulch several inches away from the
bark, so that your tree's trunk can "breathe."

November: wrap the trunk
from the base of the tree up to the
lowest branches to protect your
young tree’s thin bark from sunscald.
Tree wrap is available at gardening stores.
April: remove the wrap to prevent strangling and disease.
