The Jubilee Year of Mercy invites us to rediscover the value of silence as the prayerful setting in which to reflect on the ways in which God’s mercy transforms our lives, in order to make mercy the heart of our own lifestyle. But in a line that sounds odd, Jesus “rebuked” his disciples “and directed them not to tell anyone” (9:20–21) after they professed their faith in Jesus as “the Christ of God” (9:20). Jesus challenges us also to profess our faith not by what we say, but by what we do: take up our own cross daily (9:23) and “bear one another’s burdens” (Galatians 6:2). Our gratitude for God’s mercy toward us should make us instruments of God’s mercy toward all. Then, as Zechariah prophesies in today’s first reading, the fountain of God’s mercy will open to purify the whole world from the sin and selfishness that cause suffering and sorrow to so many (Zechariah 13:1). —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Blessed is the Father, Who lets the Lord Be his guiding hand, Whose faith brings His family courage, Whose wisdom comes from God, And whose children still stand And honor him. May God Bless our Fathers! ¡Dios Bendiga a Nuestros Padres! —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. JUNE19, 2016 PAGE 4 WITH ALL YOUR HEART • CON TODO NUESTRO CORAZÓN HEART TO SHARE PRESENTS… “CHRISTMAS IN JULY” In our “Heart to Share” season, “Christmas in July” is an acknowledgement that hunger never takes a holiday; needs don’t go away when we go on vacation or when our routines slow down. “Christmas in July” is a three-part event taking place this summer to help remind us of our Christian responsibilities to care for one another. In June, we are working with our parish Food Pantry ministry to solicit donations for children who are home from school and missing meals provided by their schools. In July, we will work with Fr. Ennis Village, a ministry that helps reintegrate recently-released prisoners back into society. In August, we will seek donations of school supplies, books and learning games for our parish ESOL ministry. In a spirit of selfless love for God and others, with how much of your heart do you share your resources, energy and financial gifts, freely, sacrificially, and joyfully? The St. Francis Children’s Choir sings at one 10:30 Mass per month and at the 4:00pm Mass on Christmas Eve. Rehearsals go from September through May. The choir is open to all children of the parish, grades 2 through 8. Rehearsals take place on Thursday evenings from 6:00pm-6:45pm in the Church. Through their participation in the Eucharistic liturgy, the Children’s Choir provides an important ministry to the all faithful who assemble for worship. CANTORS Cantors are selected from the parish choirs. Strong spirituality and an ability to develop the skills necessary to lead the assembly in sung prayer are necessary. The cantor must demonstrate a particular degree of vocal skills as well as commitment to the liturgical assembly. Cantors are usually selected following a time of commitment to the choir. Cantors must have an understanding of the liturgy and be comfortable singing alone at times. INSTRUMENTALISTS We welcome those who are gifted with the ability to play an instrument. Various instrumentalists minister at designated Masses. Participation as an instrumentalist is dependent upon the proficiency level of the player. Rehearsals are usually scheduled as needed prior to the designated Masses. Instrumentalists are always welcome, especially during the Christmas and Easter seasons. FUNERAL CHOIR The Funeral Choir is comprised of singers who are flexible with their time, and wish to share their gift of song at funeral masses. Share your talents with all of God’s people! If you are interested in the Music Ministry, we would love to have you. Please contact the Director of Music & Liturgy, Jonathan Branton, at [email protected] or call the Parish Office.
