Never, ever been to an opera? Arizona Opera
performs world-class opera at both Phoenix
Symphony Hall and the Tucson Music Hall and
makes the experience easy and fun. The final
dress rehearsal of each opera is open to
children and accompanying adults – all you
need to do is reserve your inexpensive ticket
two weeks before the performance by calling
the Opera’s Education Department. There are
also pre-performance lectures at some Arizona
Opera’s productions, and a chance to meet
members of the cast at “Opera Talkbacks,”
a question-and-answer session.
¿Nunca has asistido a la ópera? La Ópera de Arizona
presenta opera de categoría mundial tanto en el Teatro
Sinfónico de Phoenix como en el Teatro Musical de Tucson
y hace que esa experiencia sea fácil y divertida. El ensayo
final con vestuario para cada ópera está abierto para niños
y adultos acompañantes – todo lo que tienes que hacer es

Get to the opera a little early. If you’re late,
you might have to wait until the end of the
first act to be seated!

What makes opera so special?
Because it’s got it all! Like theatre, it has scenery and a
story (but, in opera the words are sung, not spoken). Like
ballet, it has dance. Like the symphony, it has music
played by an orchestra.

And, clap when the conductor comes out
to start the performance, when everyone
else is clapping, and at the very end of the
opera when the singers are taking their
bows.
And, added to all this are amazing voices! Opera
singers must have years and years of voice
lessons. Their voices have to be very strong
because they never use a microphone! They have to sing in lots of different
languages and be good actors, too.

When an opera singer performs a song especially well, the audience shouts out a
special word. In Italian the word “bravo” means excellent! But...say bravo (brahvoh) to a man. Say brava (brah-vah) to a woman. Say bravi (brah-vee) to a group of
men and women. Say brave (brah-vay) to a group of women.
¿Qué es lo que hace que la ópera sea tan especial?
¡Porque lo tiene todo! Igual que el teatro, tiene un escenario y una historia; (pero
en la ópera se cantan las palabras en vez de hablarlas). Como el ballet, tiene
danza. Y como la sinfónica, tiene música interpretada por una orquesta.
Sumado a todo eso, ¡están las voces! Los cantantes de ópera tienen que recibir
años y años de lecciones de voz. Sus voces tienen que ser muy fuertes porque
nunca usan micrófonos. Tienen que cantar en varios idiomas y, además, ser
buenos actores.
Cuando un cantante de ópera se destaca al cantar una canción, el público puede
gritarle una palabra especial. Esa palabra, en italiano, es “bravo” que significa
excelente. Sin embargo...se dice bravo (brah-voh) a un hombre. Se dice brava
(brah-vah) a una mujer. Se dice bravi (brah-vee) a un grupo de hombres y mujeres.
