January 2, 2011 – Epiphany Isaiah 60:1-6 ; Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6;Matthew 2:2-12 Mass Intentions for the Week What star do you follow? Many of us, or the people we know within our own community, have taken long trips to reach this country. The decision to leave our own country is not easy and it is taken, ultimately, because of the conviction that what is being sought after is great and worthwhile. All of us are looking for something: a better life, a better future for our children. Deep down, we are all yearning for salvation. That means leaving oppression and coming into a land (internally and externally) of freedom. It is the same thing the Three Wise Men did. %The fact that they embarked on a journey despite all the difficulties it would entail that they sought light and salvation. They followed their star, that is their call or vocation: the call to seek God with all their strength. The fact that they found Jesus is a sign of hope for us: it is possible to find God. From any country, any race or social status, we are all called to find our vocation and to find our God. Even if the journey is not easy we have to leave much behind. For reflection What do you feel you called to do? What would you have to leave behind to achieve it? What star or light are you pursuing? What can help you on your way? Remember when I started this experiment, I mentioned “and profound pain". Did you really think I had forgotten the topic “when things go wrong" You foolish person. I don’t know where to start. I will give my impressions. I am sure you know as much as I since divorce is not an alien concept to any of us - at least to those living in contemporary society. And that we are!!! Where do I begin? Since I personally did most of the marriages in River Edge where I was for over thirty eight years, I saw firsthand the tragedy that was happening to many couples -even couples I was virtually certain had stable backgrounds and were prepared as well I could prepare anyone for living with someone which, of course , is marriage. I constantly told then to make sure their choice of whom to wake up every morning with was carefully considered. Like most priests, before God, I felt I did my best to make them understand the seriousness of their decision. Oh well, now for the Pain!
