THE 39 STEPS
1 El hombre que murió.
Regresé a mi apartamento sobre las tres en esta tarde de
mayo, muy disgustado con la vida. Hacía tres meses que estaba
de vuelta en Gran Bretaña y ya estaba aburrido. Hacía mal
tiempo, la gente era muy sosa, y las diversiones de Londres tan
excitantes como un jarro de agua fría. Richard Hannay, me dije a
mí mismo, has cometido un error, y harías bien en hacerle algo.
I returned to my flat at about three o’clock on that may
afternoon, very unhappy with life. I had been back in Britain for
three months, and I was already bored. The weather was bad,
the people were dull, and the amusements of London seemed as
exciting as a glass of cold water. “Richard Hannay”, I told myself,
“you have made a mistake, and you had better do something
about it”.
Me ponía de mal humor el hecho de pensar en los años que
había pasado en África. Había pasado estos años trabajando muy
duro y haciendo dinero. No mucho dinero, pero lo suficiente
para mí. Yo había dejado Escocia cuando tenía 6 años, y nunca
había vuelto a casa desde entonces.
It made me hungry when I thought of the years I had spent
in Africa. I had spent those years working very hard and making
money. Not a lot of money, but enough for me. I had left
Scotland when I was six years old, and I had never been home
since.
