1. Inspect everyone in your household for head lice. Examine the person’s
scalp and hair carefully for any signs of active lice or the presence of nits.
Start on one side of the head and part the hair approximately every ¼ inch
until you reach the opposite side of the head. Closely examine the areas
around the ears, the nape of the neck and the crown of the head. Do not
confuse dandruff for nits. Nits cannot easily be removed. They are cemented
to the hair shafts and can be removed only by sliding them off the hair shaft
with a special comb; or may need to be physically removed using two fingers.
If nits or lice are found in your child’s hair, follow the directions for
treatment and control of head lice and nits.
2. It is recommended that you use an over-the-counter lice treatment product.
All of these shampoos are available in drug stores without a prescription.
Follow the directions on the bottle carefully. Repeating shampoo sooner
than recommended can cause harm.
3. While the hair is wet, comb it thoroughly with a fine tooth metal comb made
particularly for this purpose. This comb can be purchased separately at the
drugstore where you buy the shampoo or may come with the shampoo. The
hair must be combed or hand-picked strand by strand, inch by inch, to assure
COMPLETE REMOVAL OF EVERY NIT. Pay special attention for nits at the
nape of the neck and behind the ears.
4. Check hair daily for 6-9 days for nits. Be alert for re-infestation.
5. Repeat shampoo treatment in 7-10 days or according to directions of
shampoo. Remember, the survival of one nit can cause re-infestation in
7-10 days.
6. Household disinfecting should be carried out at the same time as the child’s
treatment. The Health Department does not recommend pediculicide spraying
of rooms or carpets.
7. Soak all combs, brushes and hair accessories for 1 hour in rubbing alcohol or
a pediculicide or boil in water for 5 minutes.
8. Machine wash all bedding, blankets, clothing (including clothing they are
wearing), and towels in hot water. Dry in a hot dryer for at least 20 minutes.
9. Put all stuffed animals, pillows, dolls, hats, comforters and any other nonwashable personal items in a plastic garbage bag and seal for 2 weeks. After
2 weeks, open the bag outdoors and shake all items vigorously. Some items
such as comforters and jackets may be dry cleaned.
10. Vacuum, Vacuum, Vacuum! Be sure to thoroughly vacuum mattresses, floors,
rugs, all carpets and furniture, then carefully remove vacuum cleaner bag
outdoors, seal in plastic bag and throw it out immediately.
11. Vacuum inside the car, including any car seats and the headrests.

1.Revise a todos en su hogar para piojos. Inspeccione el cuero cabelludo de la
persona cuidadosamente para cualquier señal de vivos piojos o para la presencia de
liendres. Comience de un lado de la cabeza separando el cabello aproximadamente
cada ¼ de pulgada hasta que llegue al lado opuesto de la cabeza. Con mucha cautela
examine las áreas alrededor de los oídos, la nuca, y la coronilla de la cabeza. No
confunda la caspa con las liendres. Liendres no se remueven fácilmente. Están
firmemente pegadas al eje del cabello y sólo se pueden remover deslizándolas del
cabello con un peine; o se pueden quitar con dos dedos deslizados. Si se encuentran
liendres o piojos en el cabello de su niño, siga las instrucciones para el
tratamiento y control de piojos.
2. Se recomienda que use un producto para el tratamiento de piojos sin receta médica
comprada en tienda. Todo champú está disponible en farmacias sin receta. Siga
cuidadosamente las instrucciones como indicadas en la botella. Repetición del
lavado con dicho champú antes de lo recomendado puede causar daño.
3. Mientras el cabello está mojado, péinelo totalmente con un peine de metal de diente fino
el cual se utiliza exclusivamente para este propósito. Este peine se puede comprar por
separado o en ocasiones está incluido con la compra del champú. El cabello se tiene
que peinar o separar cabello por cabello, pulgada por pulgada para asegurar LA
COMPLETA REMOVIDA DE CADA LIENDRE. Ponga atención especial en la nuca y en
la parte atrás de los oídos para liendres que estén presentes.
4. Revise el cabello diario por 6-9 días para liendres. Esté alerto para posible re-infestación.
5. Repita el tratamiento de champú en 7-10 días o de acuerdo a las instrucciones del
champú. Recuerde, si sobrevive una liendre, puede causar otra infestación en 710 días.
6. Desinfección del hogar se debe llevar a cabo simultáneamente al tratamiento de su niño.
El Departamento de Salubridad no recomienda limpieza con sustancias para exterminar
a piojos en cuartos o alfombras.
7. Remoje en alcohol todos los cepillos, peines, u otros accesorios de cabello por una hora
o en agua hirviendo por 5 minutos.
8. En su máquina de lavar ropa, lave todos artículos de cama, cobijas, ropa, (incluyendo la
ropa puesta), y toallas. Ponga ropa en máquina de secar por lo menos 20 minutos en lo
caliente.
9. Ponga todos los peluches, almohadas, muñecas, sombreros, edredones, y cualquier otro
artículo personal no lavable en bolsas grandes de plástico y selle por 2 semanas.
Después de las 2 semanas, abra la bolsa de plástico en el exterior y sacude todos los
artículos vigorosamente. Algunos de sus pertenencias como edredones y chamarras se
pueden mandar a la tintorería. Con la maquina aspiradora: barra, barra y barra!!
Asegure de aspirar completamente colchones, pisos, tapetes, todas alfombras y
muebles, luego con cuidado saque la bolsa de la aspiradora a fuera, séllela en una de
plástico, y descártela inmediatamente.
10. Con la aspiradora, barra adentro de su automóvil, incluyendo cualquier asiento de niño, o
cualquier cabecero.
