EAGLES II
It was a simple fix. The headlight was out. Finding
the source of the problem, though, took a little doing.
So “keep it simple”. I pull the lamp off the ’74. I
haven’t started that bike in a year, but I’m pretty sure
the headlight worked the last time I did. I had such
plans for her, but she came from Tucson and I had
already hauled her west from Olivier’s place before I
noticed that the numbers on her papers didn’t match
the numbers on her frame. No way CHP was going
to let that slide so there she sits, keeping watch in
a room otherwise dedicated to painting rubber on
blankets that my grandmother knits.
But back to the task at hand. I swap out the lamps
and move the switch to the low beam position.
Then, close the choke and open the throttle a bit.
I hold the kill button down with my right thumb
and pump the kicker three times with my right foot.
Release the kill button. Close the throttle. Open the
choke now wet with gasoline. Push the kicker down
slowly once and hear the exhaust cycle give. Push
it down slowly again and feel the pressure build in
the cylinder. Have to be careful now. Push down
one more time but just a hair more than half way.
Now she’s ready to go. I put my left knee on the seat.
I grab the throttle with my right hand and keep it
closed. I lock the heel of my right boot firmly against
the kicker pedal, put my left hand on the seat, lift
myself up and drop down hard with intention. She
starts. I open the throttle a bit so she idles smooth
and look at the headlight. Dark. I move the switch to
the high beam position and take a look. Dark.
Two dead lamps? Unlikely.

Oscuro.
“You let Mike pick the music on the weekends?”
“How’d you guess?”
I walk into the studio and over to the box. Get what
I need and then head back outside with assorted
tools in a tote bag with a screen print of a Pettibon
drawing of a train on one side and the Hammer
Museum logo on the other. The text in the drawing
reads: Can you hear the sea?
Nope
I remove the lamp from the headlight assembly
and then remove the headlight assembly from the
visor. The visor is powder-coated black to match the
frame, gas tank, oil bag, wheels, and fender. It looks
good. Now I can get to the wires, which I disconnect.
Maybe it’s the switch? I disconnect the hot wire
from the switch lead wire. I take some wire from
my tote and cut off about six inches. Strip the ends;
crimp a screw connector to one end and an auto-wire
connector to the other. I attach the wire to the low
beam screw on the headlight assembly and then
connect it to the hot wire. I re-install the original
lamp (It doesn’t look blurry, blown or corroded). I
bolt the assembly back to the visor and give the bike
a kick. Nice, she starts right up. I open her up a bit
to a smoother idle and look at the headlight. Dark.
I kill the engine and take everything apart. It’s not
the switch.
Maybe both the high and low beam wires need
juice for the circuit to run? That doesn’t make
sense because the switch would break the circuit to
the high beam when the low beam is on, but who
knows? Electricity is magic. So back to the tote for
some more wire. I split the hot wire and connect it to
the high and low beam screws. I hook up the lamp

¿Dos lámparas fundidas? Improbable.
No

When assembled properly, the lamp is grounded
to the headlight assembly. The headlight assembly
is bolted to the visor. The visor is bolted to the
fork. The fork is bolted to the wheel. The wheel is
encircled with the tire. The electricity created by the
generator powered by the engine moves through the
hot wire to the switch and then through either the
low or high beam wires to the lamp where the bulb is
illuminated, then it moves through the ground wire
and the bike’s front end until it reaches the ground.
The headlight visor is powder-coated. It looks good.
But that paint is just thick enough to insulate the
metal beneath, breaking the circuit.
I re-attach the hot wire to the switch lead wire and
then connect the high and low beam wires to their
respective screws on the headlight assembly. Using
needle-nose pliers, I yank the ground wire free of
its grommet and then push the now compromised
grommet through its own hole. Vince finds a screw
regulador, quito el estárter, suave, suave, lento, fuerte.
Arranca.

that fits an empty hole in the fork. The screw is a
bit long so he sets to grinding it down. It’s easy to
distract Vince with a mechanical problem. He likes
solving mechanical problems. Stoner Mike keeps up
with the sanding. Meanwhile, I rig up a new ground
wire. Carrie-Lee has arrived and her dog Teddy sits
with me while I bolt the headlight assembly to the
powder-coated visor that caused so much trouble.
Teddy is a jet black Pomeranian. He looks good. I
feed the new ground wire through the grommet hole
and Vince arrives just in time with the customized
screw. I crimp on a screw connector and then secure
the new ground wire to the fork.
Choke, throttle, kill, pump, pump, pump, un-kill,

PS. If you kick and kick and kick and your motorcycle won’t
start then dollars to doughnuts you forgot to open the fuel line.
