Dear parish family,
23 Sunday C
A member of the Missionaries of St. Charles – Scalabrinians, is in our parish this weekend preaching at all Masses.
He shares with us the concerns and longings of the missionary activity that his Religious Order was entrusted in the
Church: the care of migrant and refugee people. He is sent by the Catholic Mission Office with the purpose of
reminding each baptized catholic of our common responsibility to teach all nations about God’s salvation plan in Christ
Jesus. A second collection will be taken for the needs of the Missionaries of St. Charles also called the Scalabrinians.
Please be generous. Many thanks for your prayers and financial support.
The Scalabrinians is a world-wide Catholic Religious Community of Priests and Brothers founded in
Piacenza, Italy in 1887 by St. John Baptist Scalabrini, with specific mission to assist in the spiritual and social needs of
migrants and refugees. Its missionaries are present in 33 nations around the world. They are in charge of shelter
homes for refugees or migrants in transit or deported aliens, seamen’s centers, villages of elderly migrants, and
centers of migration studies. Many of them are engaged in preaching missions to migrant communities, teaching, or
running multicultural parishes and ethnic missions.
This Sunday (September 4), Pope Francis officially declares Mother Teresa of Calcutta, a saint; it is the eve
of the 19th anniversary of her death. She died on Sept. 5, 1997 at the age of 87. She was beatified just six years later
by St. John Paul II Oct. 19, 2003. Her canonization this Sunday was previously established at the Vatican for the
conclusion of the Year of Mercy pilgrimage of people like her who are engaged in works of mercy.
Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950 which has now over 4,500 sisters around the
world caring for the poorest of the poor and running orphanages, AIDS hospices, and charity centers worldwide. Even
in her lifetime, she was already known as a living saint, an icon of God’s tender mercy, radiating the light of God’s love
to so many through the works of mercy, both material and spiritual. With her canonization, the Church presents her
as a model and intercessor of those who, like her, “long to light the fire of love and peace throughout the world.” She
can be taken as a patron saint especially for those who are most in need of God’s mercy.
By her example and through her intercession, may Mother Theresa inspire many to give their “hearts to love
and their hands to serve,” starting with those closest to them.
The whole church rejoices with her canonization and celebrates with full gratitude for her exemplary life. Saint
Teresa, pray for us!
Blessings to all and have a good week!
Fr. Tony Castro
Querida familia parroquial,
Este domingo (4 de septiembre), El Papa Francisco oficialmente declarara a Madre Teresa de Calcuta, una santa;
Padre Tony Castro

following him, the great cost of discipleship. The
Mission Statement of the society of St. Vincent de Paul
states: “Vincentians witness God’s love by embracing
all works of charity and justice… the Society makes no
distinction in those served because, in them,
vincentians see the face of Christ.”

Garland of Mercy...
In this Jubilee Year, we are asked to open our
eyes and hearts to see how God is working in
our lives and to more actively spread His
mercy out to others. We are creating a Garland of Mercy with our teen group to bear witness to our efforts to help others.
For the entire year, we are asking
each week when you do works of mercy, to write down one or
more works on the strips of paper in the ends of the
pews. Please put them into the collection basket so that we
offer up, not just our
treasure to the Lord, but our time and
talent in a visible way.
Red Strips are for The Corporal Works of Mercy: feeding the
hungry, clothing the needy, visiting the sick or imprisoned.
White Strips are for The Spiritual Works of Mercy: Counseling
the doubtful, bearing wrongs patiently, forgiving offences
willingly and praying for the living and the dead.
Gold Ones are for the acts of mercy which we received from
others.
I know that all of you are part of spreading God’s mercy out into
the world. Please take the time to become more conscious of it
and take credit for it here before the Lord.
