Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) Scrutinies and Presentation of The Creed
On the 3rd, 4th and 5th Sundays of Lent the
Church celebrates the “Scrutinies” for the
Elect (the unbaptized adults preparing for
Baptism at the Easter Vigil). (Cycle A
Readings for the 9 AM & 11 AM Masses.)
To “scrutinize” means to take a long and
careful look at the ways we need to be healed
and strengthened. In the Scrutinies, the Elect
and the Community both acknowledge the
power of evil that hinders them from
following Christ, and the Elect give public
witness to their ongoing conversion.
Conversion is not about punishment for sin; it
is about an all-loving, merciful God who
offers to save us from sin. Conversion is an
opportunity to change.
The First Scrutiny celebrated on the 3rd
Sunday of Lent asks us to reflect on the
readings and consider the following questions.
In what way have you experienced being an outcast?
Who have you made an outcast and why? What are the
deep thirsts of our world;
Our society; Our
Communities? What are my own deep thirsts? These are
just a few of the questions the Elect have reflected on
when they kneel before the altar today.
During the week after the 3rd Sunday of Lent, the Elect
are presented with the Creed. The word “Creed” comes
from the first word of the Latin document: “credo”
meaning, “I Believe.” It is an ancient statement of faith
that tells us what the early church believed and what we
continue to believe today. During this Rite, the Elect are
presented with the essential mysteries of our faith
professed in the Nicene Creed and we ask God to purify
the Elect to make them worthy to receive the grace of
Baptism. The Creed will be presented at 6:45 PM,
Wednesday, March 11th in the Church. The Parish
Community is welcome to join us to show your ongoing
support.

Sermon continued from last Sunday’s bulletin, March 8
Because their angelic nature has been deformed and darkened by sin, devils now abuse their
great gifts from God by using them to injure and destroy human beings. Their entire purpose is
to see as many human beings as possible join them in rebelling against God and be separated
forever from God in Hell.
Although demons have remarkable powers, we need to know that their powers are
limited. For example, Satan and his cohorts cannot know the future unless God has revealed
it. However, given their vast knowledge of events throughout the world and history, they can make accurate
predictions and then act on them.
So, the devil is not an evil deity, equal in power to God who is eternal, all-powerful and all-knowing. Satan is
only a creature and, in the end, he is no match for God, His Creator and ultimate Judge.
This raises one last question about devils and their demonic activity. If God is supreme and infinitely more
powerful than Satan and his hosts, then why doesn’t God prevent them from doing evil on earth? We could
ask the same question why God doesn’t stop human beings from committing wicked deeds.
The answer is twofold. First, it’s because God respects the free will of angels and humans. Second, evil’s
continuing presence and activity among us is a mystery that we can’t fully figure out in this life. However, we
can say this much: God allows evil because He is powerful enough to bring out of the greatest evil a much
better good.
The crucifixion of Jesus Christ is the perfect example of this truth. According to the Gospel, when “Satan
entered into Judas,” one of the 12 Apostles, Judas went out and betrayed Jesus (Luke 22:3-4). So, the worst
evil we can ever imagine—the torture and murder of God’s innocent Son—occurred through the devil’s
influence. Yet, the triumph of the empty tomb transformed the horror of the cross. Satan was forever
thwarted. When Jesus rose from the dead, He displayed God’s power to bring out of the greatest evil an even
greater good—the world’s redemption.
What was true for Jesus is true for us. Our time on this earth provides the battleground for God to test, purify,
strengthen and perfect us in order to make us fit to live with Him forever in heaven. And, to that end, the
devils serve as useful tools for God as they constantly test us so that we can become purer, stronger and closer
to perfection every time we resist the devil’s temptations. Quoting St. Augustine, “As an artist, God makes
use even of the devil.”
The second principle of spiritual warfare is: KNOW OUR ENEMY’S BATTLE TACTICS. The devil
uses various tactics, both ordinary and extraordinary, in his demonic work.
The ordinary activity of the devil is subtle. It occurs within our thought life. The devil plants ideas within
our minds to influence our reason, memory and imagination—and ultimately our will. Devils can suggest
ideas through conversations, reading, or viewing certain images.
Most often, devils influence us through temptation by enticing us to sin. They get our attention through our
thoughts to arouse our emotions in order to get us to act sinfully.
Devils tempt us in various ways. First, demons tempt us through deception. In John 8:44, Jesus called the
Devil “a liar and the father of lies” In Ephesians 6:11, the Apostle Paul speaks of the devil’s “wiles.” And
again in his Second Letter to the Corinthians, 11:13, St. Paul states that Satan masquerades as an ”angel of
light.” Very often a lie stands at the heart of the temptation the devil presents. Remember how Satan deceived
Eve in the Garden of Eden. When the serpent tempted her, he did so with lies about God’s motives and the
consequences of sin (See Genesis 3:4-5). In a similar way, the devil lies to us telling us for example, “Go
ahead. Do it. It can’t be sinful because everybody is

doing it.”

Forgiveness: Getting On With It – Not Easy but Possible
So many good people suffer from an inner uneasiness hat simply will not go away. Often it is
related to a seeming inability to forgive someone, something, even God and themselves.
The Word of God in the scripture and the prayers of forgiving can release us
from the burden and grant us a new freedom.
Please join Sister Regina Robbins, SND on Tuesday, March 24, from 7:00 – 8:30 PM, as she guides us
through an exploration of forgiveness and reconciliation as possible realities for everyone. The evening will
take place at the Sisters of Notre Dame Center, 1776 Hendrix Avenue, Thousand Oaks 91360.

It is safe to keep your child’s personal information personal
If your children give out personal information over the Internet,
not only is it easy to track, it is tough to completely remove.
Emphasize to them how important it is that they keep personal
information private. Make sure that they have a strong
username and password that does not reveal anything personal.
Encourage them not to give out their e-mail address, if they
have one. If your children tell you that they have given out
personal information online, contact your Internet Service
Provider or the site where the information is posted to see what
you can do to have it removed. For more information, visit:

Tercera parte del
artículo del libro
"Manual de Guerra
Espiritual".
Porque su naturaleza
angelical ha sido deformada y
obscurecida por el pecado, los
diablos ahora abusan de sus
grandes regalos de Dios
usándolos para dañar y para
destruir a los seres humanos.
Su único propósito es hacer
caer a cuantas personas sean
posible para que se unan a ellos
en la rebelión contra Dios y ser
separados para siempre de Dios
en el Infierno. Aunque los
demonios tienen poderes,
necesitamos saber que sus poder
es limitado. Por ejemplo,
Satanás y sus colegas no pueden
saber el futuro a menos que
Dios lo haya revelado. Sin
embargo, dado su conocimiento
extenso de acontecimientos a
través del mundo y de la
historia, pueden hacer
predicciones exactas y después
actuar en ellas. Así pues, el
diablo no es un dios malvado,
igual en poder que Dios quien
es Eterno, todo Poderoso y lleno
de Sabiduria. Satanás es
solamente una criatura y al final
no puede contra Dios, Su
Creador y único Juez. Esto
plantea una ultima pregunta
sobre diablos y su actividad
diabólico . Si Dios es supremo
e infinitamente mas poderoso
que Satanás y sus
anfitriones,
Jueves:
¿Por qué entonces Dios no
evita que hagan mal en la
tierra? Podríamos
preguntar la misma
pregunta porqué Dios no
detiene a los seres
humanos que hacen el
mal. La respuesta es doble
Primero, porque Dios
respeta la voluntad libre de
los ángeles y de los seres
humanos.
En segundo lugar, la
presencia del mal y su
actividad entre nosotros es
un misterio que no
podemos entender en esta
vida.
Sin embargo, podemos
decir lo siguiente: Dios
permite el mal porque El
siendo todopoderoso
puede traer de lo mas malo
algo grande y mucho
mejor.
La crucifixión de
Jesúcristo es el ejemplo
perfecto de esta verdad.
Según el Evangelio,
“Cuando Satanás entró en
Judas,” uno de los 12
Apóstoles, Judas fue hacia
fuera y traicionó a Jesús
(Lucas 22:3 - 4). Así pues,
el peor mal que podemos
imaginar– la tortura y el
asesinato del inocente Hijo
de Dios ocurrió con la
influencia del diablo.
Todavía, el triunfo de la
tumba vacía transformó el
horror de la cruz.
Cuando Jesús resucito
dentro los muertos, El
exhibió el poder de Dios
al extraer del mayor mal
algo tan bueno—la
redención del mundo. Lo
que fue cierto para Jesús
es verdad para nosotros.
Nuestro tiempo en esta
tierra proporciona el
campo de batalla para que
Dios nos ponga a prueba,
nos purifique, fortifique y
nos perfeccione para que
podamos vivir con El por
siempre en cielo. Y así
que los diablos sirven
como herramientas útiles
para Dios mientras ya que
nos prueban
constantemente y de
modo que nos dan la
oportunidad para ser más
puros, más fuertes y más
cercano a la perfección
cada vez que nos
oponemos a las
tentaciones del diablo.
Como dijo San Agustín,
“Como artista, Dios
utiliza incluso del diablo.”
El segundo principio de
la guerra espiritual es:
CONOZCA LA
TÁCTICA DE
NUESTRO ENEMIGO.
El diablo utiliza varias
tácticas, ordinarias y
extraordinarias, en su
trabajo diabólico. La
actividad ordinaria del
diablo es sutil.

Ocurre dentro de nuestro
pensamientos. El diablo
planta ideas dentro de
nuestras mentes para influir
en la razón. Los diablos
pueden sugerir ideas con
conversaciones, lectura, o
ciertas imágenes. Mas a
menudo los diablos nos
influyen tentándonos para
que pequemos Consiguen
nuestra atención con
nuestros pensamientos para
despertar nuestras
emociones para conseguir
que pequemos. Los
diablos nos tientan de
varias maneras. Primero,
los demonios nos tientan
con el engaño. Jesús llamo
al diablo “un mentiroso y el
padre de mentiras”
En Ef 6:11, el Apóstol San
Pablo habla de como el
diablo se disfraza como un
el “ángel de la luz”
Muy a menudo hay una
mentira en el corazón de la
tentación que el diablo
presenta. Recuerda cómo
Satanás engañó a Eva en el
jardín de Edén. Cuando la
serpiente le tentó, él hizo
con mentiras acerca de los
motivos de Dios y las
consecuencias del pecado
(véase la Génesis 3:4 - 5).
De una manera similar, las
mentiras del diablo a
nosotros que nos dicen por
ejemplo, “Procede. Hazlo.
No puede ser pecado ya
que todos lo están
haciendo”
