VALENTINE HOW TO PREVENT FOOD POISONING Summer is a great time to spend time outdoors and fi e up the grill. Spending time outdoors is a fun way to stay active. We want to make sure that your outdoor meal plans are safe and healthy. PRESCRIPTION DRUG SAFETY Food poisoning affl ts many people every year. In many cases, it can result in hospitalization. It can result from contamination from the improper preparation, storage or cooking of food. Symptoms of food poisoning include severe vomiting and diarrhea. This can lead to dehydration and severe illness in adults and children. Heating can kill bacteria, and keeping food frozen or in a cooler can reduce the risk of the growth of bacteria. However, neither can get rid of the toxins that are produced by these bacteria if they have a chance to grow. • Keep a clean surface for food preparation. • Wash your hands to avoid contamination. • Use a meat thermometer to ensure that beef is cooked at an internal temperature of 145° (ground beef and other meats such as chicken and pork should be cooked to an internal temperature of 165°) • Keep meat sealed and separated from contact with other foods. What if I think I have food poisoning? • Rehydrate with clear liquids. • Get plenty of rest. • Do not eat solid foods until the nausea and vomiting have stopped. • Check in with your doctor if your symptoms persist for more than a couple days (24 hours in children). By following these tips carefully, you can ensure that your summer plans do not get cancelled by food-borne illness, so you can spend less time in the bathroom and more time outdoors having fun with friends and family. Drug abuse can affect anyone. Did you know it is considered drug abuse when someone takes medication that is prescribed to someone else? It is also abuse to take your own medication in a way not prescribed by a doctor. High risk foods include anything containing dairy or eggs. Even if someone takes another person’s medication for its intended purposes, it is still considered drug abuse. Tips to reduce the risk of food poisoning: • Keep food frozen or in a cooler as long as possible by placing the foods that you are going to eat first t the top of your cooler. Prescription drugs are usually safe when taken as prescribed by your doctor. If not taken as directed, you may be at risk for: • Abuse • Harmful health effects • Addiction • Overdose TOBACCO QUIT LINE If you have questions about your medications, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
