entrevista ÁNGELES AGRELA GALERÍA MAGDA BELLOTTI 2 Artwoman! Artwoman! Drawing doors in the face of unbreachable walls¡ Wendy Navarro Fernández Dibujando puertas ante muros infranqueables! The Chosen One flies over space in search of new adventures, turned into a great media figure. ‘Lost, alone, lethal, between beauty and despair...’ it ‘explores new markets’, it ‘confronts critical theory head on’... As in any ritual it gets its wardrobe together (an indispensable accessory linked to its strength and each one of its mutations). Foreground set against a backdrop of shadows highlight the position of the dress (‘handmade, put together with floral fabrics’), the shoes, the gloves, the mask... Properly dressed, she stars in action stories and stories of science fiction, following narrative and composition structures belonging to stories of superheroes, thus forming part of a tradition of ‘heroic figures’ that have been satisfying the ancestral illusion that the ‘defenceless human race’ has to rely on the protection of certain highly-gifted beings. The awareness of one’s own weakness, the precariousness of existence and the fear of death have all come together so that poor mortals La Elegida sobrevuela el espacio en busca de nuevas aventuras, convertida en un personaje de gran aceptación mediática. Heroes who go all out and do not procrastinate when it comes to ‘restoring the order that the forces of evil have disrupted’; heroes who are willing to accept their fate regardless of the sacrifice involved: ‘A moral imperative compels them to use their inspiration to forge a better world’. As the Chosen One then Angeles Agrela assumes this role of super-heroine (‘as metaphor of artistic behaviour’), art-woman (super-hero artist) that works as heteronymous or alter ego as part of the new movements in the field of identity that do not only represent an act of ‘joyous energy’ but also one of moral responsibility: ‘Joyous creativity in relation to movement in so far as it shows the pleasure of experiencing freedom, a mockeryescape from tradition as well as an opportunity to experiment, mix, shaking the whole thing to come up with something new. Perhaps therein lies the impulse towards that area of the visual arts so prone to the creation of another whose features or lifestyle are never wholly innocent. We see the heroine zooming through the skies, jetting across cities, countries or museums in total control of her capabilities and her power, protected by ‘loud super-costumes’ of incredible designs and colour. Ready for action and trained in the preparation of masks and clothing gear, in the use of strength and speed, wrestling and camouflage (Lost in combat, No pain no gain, Fights, The Chosen One, Even Stevens, the Heroes) she manoeuvres, secure, shifting happily and nimbly across different landscapes and realities. She travels through the world and through the interstices of her own discursive fabric where, in the midst of shifting sands and intense ‘saturated’ colours also live moments of extreme danger (instability, insecurity, agony) ‘finally casting light on the outcome of creation which is also the outcome of traffic’. The relationship between the artist and his/her work –difficult, complex, full of queries, doubts and contradictions- lingers behind these passages alternating control and instability, security and uncertainty, pride and deception (‘estrangement in front of the work itself’). Preceded by some works that ‘played with the irony behind some artistic forms of behaviour as well as so-called ‘artists’ things’ that set us apart socially’ or that ‘drew a comparison with the artist understood in a Nietzschean way, as a super- man capable of following its own path’, the current show widens significantly a number of reflections on the role of art and the artist that can be applied to society in general. With Power and the series of covers The Chosen One (imitation of the typical comics’ covers, with the foreshortening of the characters, the bar codes, the phrases heading each chapter) a group of strategies and mechanisms (appropriations, simulacra, the use of images in motion, photography, drawing, installation and performance-based work) come to fruition such as the ‘processes of doubling up and fictionalisation of the “I” previously undertaken by the artist. Resulting from a need both expressive as instrumental, she happily steps into that LOS HÉROES 2004. La identificación artista/superhéroe adquiere nuevas dimensiones, así como el sentido irónico-humo- 9 zone of ‘identity dodging in the guise of the creation of fictional identities’. In this case, a super-heroine that one after another takes on central roles in scenes full of action, pleasure, intrigue or violence as part of the on-going ironic reworking of the art world and/or the behaviour of any given individual. The identification artist/superhero acquires new dimensions such as the ‘caustic wink’ or the humorous/ironic take on the world of comics and the stories of superheroes, a world both ideal (and prolific) from which to carry out all sorts of manipulations and reworkings both thematic and formal. The superheroes of the comics represent the best and the worst in humanity, dwelling on the personal, the political, the sexual and the social in a way 10 rístico, el “guiño caústico” hacia el universo del cómic y las historias de superhéroes, que ofrecen un escenario mas que propicio (y prolífico) desde donde ejecutar todo tipo de manipulaciones y recreaciones formales y temáticas. Similarly, they rely on an extraordinary wealth both iconographic and symbolic including large areas of popular culture and its impact on the collective unconscious. The superhero of fiction (capable of surviving and surviving well in today’s marketplace climate as well as belonging to the fictional world making it both more credible and more efficient to perform its function of symbolic salvation) does not seem to have supplanted altogether that other figure of the artist-hero created by the avantgarde and whose power resided in its artistic intention to promote subversion and change. Heroes that have a tormented life, a normal life in which they have to work to make a living, a life riddled with doubts and impossible relationships; artists that’ no longer place themselves in front of the landscape like a Romantic superman but somehow slip into the spectacle, wear supermarket clothes and have a drink or two and like everyone else ‘they are responsible for no heroic acts whatever’. They offer, however, works of art, messages, transformations that never cease to be proposals for alternative lifestyles. The ambiguity (relativity) of the heroic acts reaches out the foreground of those large drawings depicting masked faces with defiant glances in the midst of bold stains bursting with colour, strokes or contrasts of light and shadow. Characters that live on the margins of the established order: boxers, masked wrestlers, ‘people who use camouflage to avoid standing out’. Individuals who feel the need to question or re-invent their marks of identity when confronted with certain political and cultural changes, all part of that endless game of role swapping and mask wearing, of depersonalisation and duplicity: perhaps the only way to be oneself. One way of perpetuating that ‘never-ending nomadic existence’ as an expression of ‘the forever provisional and transitory nature of things; a reflection of a time without closure, without a fixed identity, wandering, faceless’. Amidst the choreographic shadows and the performing gestures and hovering over this subversive paradox where resorting to the most emblematic and traditional of methods portrays a great deal that is underground doja donde la recurrencia al método más tradicional y emblemático, representa las situaciones más subculturales y colaterales10, las imágenes de Ángeles Agrela, crean un espacio dinámico donde se entrecruzan síntomas inherentes al sujeto y la vida contemporánea con elementos afines al desarrollo de las nuevas prácticas artísticas: Desde el “descentramiento del sujeto moderno”, la “identidad como máscara”, los “disfraces del alma”, conceptos como “identidades múltiples”, “crisis de la autoría” o “enmascaramiento grupal”, hasta la propia noción de juego en el arte contemporáneo (juegos de identidad, textuales, semánticos, de lenguaje), el uso del cuerpo (la reivindicación del cuerpo como una de las claves de nuestro tiempo) o las complejas relaciones entre naturaleza y artificio, realidad y ficción, lo privado y lo público. LA ELEGIDA 2005. Fotografía 149 x 117cm. / LA ELEGIDA 2005. Fotografía 149 x 117cm. Obra producida para Arte y Naturaleza. 13 and marginal, the images of Angeles Agrela create a dynamic space that is nothing short of a crossroad between the inherently personal in the context of contemporary life and means of developing new artistic practices. These would include: the ‘derailment’ of modern man; ‘identity as mask’; the ‘disguises of the soul’; newly forged concepts such as ‘multiple identities’, the death of the author or ‘group maskmaking’. Further, it would also include the notion of ‘game’ in contemporary art (identity games, textual, semantic, language games), the use of the body (reclaiming the body as one of the key features of our time), or indeed the complex relationship between the natural and the artificial, reality and fiction, the private and the public. A work imbued with the longing for an action that is real, meaning the gradual unfolding of a mechanism both ethical and political capable of putting together a ‘politics of representation’ for the construction of a different public space. A new type of fiction capable of reinterpreting reality from the standpoint of ‘hybrid’ works of art, thus opening up the possibility of certain utopias based in the exemplary value of the work of art. Hence that in the cynical world of the postmodern where the old absolute truths have lost their sharpness -and still under the influence of that old ‘conflictive attitude’ where symbolism meets the modern times- the Chosen One continues in her desire to draw doors in the face of unbreachable walls. What I’ve got is a very rare disease called “situs inversus”.”It’s a very strange physical abnormality that has caused my organs to be switched around. It was discovered when I was seven, because they took me to the hospital when I caught pneumonia, and that’s how they found out. My heart is on the right side, my liver is on the left side, and my stomach is switched around... It’s a mess. I made that tablecloth with embroideries of guts and flesh, all in the wrong place, following a formal pattern, and it was fun and autobiographical at the same time. I didn’t start studying art until after med school. The truth is that my father pressured me to follow in the family Esa enfermedad no te mata pero te acompaña cada día. This illness doesn’t kill you, but it’s always there. Your muscles don’t respond and you have to live with that; doing your work has an added degree of difficulty. You do the same things as everyone else, but it takes twice the effort. Yes...of course, I’m sure all of this showed up later in my work. The body, elasticity and limitation, strength and inability... All of this has been in my work from the start. I haven’t used muscles and flesh as a metaphor for anything. They’re just what they appear to be, muscles. From the time I was a little girl I was strong, with big muscles. I always thought I was a a natural athlete, because I was good at sports. But no, it turns out that it was also due in part to my myotonia. tradition, but I’ve had a deep passion for art ever since they discovered my disease. And I never quit; my med school books are covered in drawings. I think that’s how I started the series on random printed material, and on the pages of old books that I cover with drawings. There’s a foundation there that, whether I like it or not, also forms part of the drawing. Sometimes my esophagus gets paralyzed and I can’t swallow, so it better not come on when I’m eating. Other times my eyes get stuck looking in one direction or my eyelids close on their own. So I’m always writing down what I eat in my little notebook in order to see if that’s what’s really causing my paralysis. It’s like drawing; the notebook is like an appendix and it’s always there for me to take notes and make an outline. I’m sure that all that has later surfaced. I think it has a lot to do with my jug installations. Yes, that happened after the accident, while I was bedridden. I didn’t leave the house for several months, and I spent my days drawing more than anything else. I would also read some of my father’s magazines, art magazines, travel magazines... All of his stuff was there, like relics, his art, his paintings... Nunca he tenido miedo al color. I’ve never been afraid of color. When I use it, I feel like you do when you see where you are on a map. No, well... it wasn’t exactlyt like that. Actually, mi sexual identity was never a problem for me until I came to this country. On top of all the alienation issues that you can imagine, I suddenly had to understand that my sexual preference made me different. Or that supposedly, my work had to be identified with a particular group and I was expected to be outspoken about it. ...that has nothing to do with my disease. Way earlier, when I was still dancing, I learned some physical routines that are also present in my work, especially in the videos. Dancing shapes you physically, but it also creates let’s say a certain mental discipline that has served me well in my artistic work. 20 After my father left us, we all had to help at home. In my village there was no running water. At home we always had some really big jugs that we used to go get water, and they weighed a ton. ...And then a family of contorsionists took me in. They were amazing... My abilities, to tell you the truth, weren’t that great. But I saw them do all of that stuff... just to put on a shirt or something... I don’t know, I thought I should also be able to do it!... but I never did anything other than cleaning the animals and collecting the donations for the day. Everything else was impossible. ... and that is why sometimes art does something similar; it’s like twisting your whole body around, your skin, your guts, your muscles, just to do something simple, something that people who are gifted do as if they were just putting on a shirt. Those of us who are dyslexic are predominantly visual and we think multidimensionally. We are intuitive and creative, and we learn better by using our hands. Since we think in images and not in words, we often have a lot of trouble understanding letters, symbols, and written words. The truth is that contemporary art, which is all about the word, is not a very fruitful domain for people like me... 21 22 Wanted [Investigations carried out with the help of the ‘truth machine’ and other dictionaries] Wanted. Fernando Castro Flórez Fernando Castro Flórez For very disparate reasons (luminous changes, extreme tiredness, horrendous hangovers or digestive malfunction) we feel that whatever it is has already taken place, a feeling that has led many visionaries to establish astral connexions or penetrate the mysteries of the farmhouses, although what really affects us and bothers us is picnolepsia. It could be that at that very moment the best thing would be to cancel all judgement or, whenever it happens to become something chronic, to give up all hope and surrender oneself to the joys of a bunker existence. The best way to overcome the worst things is, undoubtedly, to go on producing them. If everything is repeated unconsciously, the only line of (delirious) resistance is that which turns reality in a joyous déjà vu. I suffer and have been suffering for many years, I do not deny it, of the Stockholm Syndrome of trash television and thus I can be seen moving on from narcolepsy to the sudden revelation of anything idiotic. For example, recently, late at night I watched a live broadcast from outside the house of Raquel Mosquera where a ‘journalist’ of sorts was trying to make some kind of contact. I slid into a state of perplexity which, paradoxically, bore a touch of euphoria about it. Who the hell had had the brilliant idea of sending a correspondent to place the microphone next to the little grid where we normally say ‘It’s me’ so that someone inside opens the street door? Under the influence of so much bienalle, I was convinced that what I was watching was a work of art or, to be more precise, a work falling neatly into the category of those performance works which are a parodic take on reality shows. Although the so-called ‘truth machine’, bearing a sinister resemblance to the electric chair –turned into a product for the artistically inclined by the Warhol factory- revealed that the murder victim was polygamous and travelled to Nigeria to organise massive ‘parties’. Meanwhile, the exemplary housewife, well protected behind her armoured intimacy until an exclusive bares it all, confessed tenderly that she had just put her baby daughter to bed. In the wake of those Dadaist excesses there is no chance, I swear, of throwing into the rubbish heap of oblivion all that ‘simulated reality’. Furthermore, that shock (below the cathodic belt) has made me recall that the day I received the literature relating to Angeles Agrela I could think of nothing else but that blessed ‘connexion’. Because it transpires that this creator has set up a confession; she has placidly sat down on a chair and, her voice steady, has gone on to tell amazing and true things. I cannot give up pedantry, I’m sorry. And so it is that I hang on to the flotsam of my memory. For example, I remember now that Nietzsche ends up his blistering account of Schopenhauer CONTORSIONISTA 2007. Acrílico sobre papel. 200 x 150 cm. 25 as Educator stating that the truth that was once tragic is nor simply pathetic. He has a point seeing that from the dizzy heights of those Aristotelian discussions on the adequatio intellectus rei or the Cartesian certainties, the Hegelian phenomenology of the spirit or the feasibility of a logical space (see Tarski), we have descended vertiginously to reach the simulacrum of interrogation that is ‘the truth machine’. To a certain extent, truthful is, forgive the pun, the truth machine itself. The gestell (scaffolding, chassis, frame) is, to use a polysemous translation, a montage. And it is precisely of these montagists that television is so full of, for although they claim repeatedly that what they speak is either ‘true’ or ‘false’ they never give up on gloss, on their right to interpretation. It is a device to keep the ball rolling, feeding the simulation that what has finally been revealed was nothing short of what we ‘all’ needed to know. Throughout the ages artists, many of whom today do montages although they prefer to call them ‘installations’, have told their life stories, offered their biographies as a key with which to unlock their work. We have to look no further than Vasari’s Lives, although there is no need to cast our mind back to the glories of the Renaissance because right at the beginning of modern eschatology we have Namuth’s film in which Pollock, consciously or not, shows his particular pictorial choreography. It was those iconic images of the ‘drip’ thing that brought about the break with the orthodoxy of modernism, opening the floodgates to everything that was hybrid. It turned out that what was truly decisive in all that expressionist space was the gesture, the action of painting. The orthodoxy of trauma replaced the paradigm of representation and the return of the real was contemporaneous with the imperialism of the already mentioned reality show. I have written a text based on the idiotic, ‘There are ugly babies. Truth be told’, used in one of the campaigns by the telecommunications company Yoigo. My interest wasn’t so much in tapping into the above –widely successful- inanity but to point out the alarming proximity between the strategies used by the marketing men and a certain intentional stupidity prevalent in today’s art. Camnitzer has referred to a kind of ‘boludo art’ although for my part I prefer, following my addiction to crap television, to recall an instance involving Risto Mejide when, having insulted one of the contestants in Operacion Triunfo, he went to pronounce mantra-like the million dollar catchphrase, ‘you are not products yet’. From Warhol’s window dressing –I return to the inspiration of the cult of youth- to the kitsch of Jeff Koons or the poses of the fashion-performance of Vanes Beecroft a commercial consideration is always present, a criticism counteracted by the claim that everything is done either ironically or infused with the spirit of parody. Angeles Agrela’s fine sense of humour allows her to appropriate the appropriation and sets up a fabulous tale in which she dismantles the rhetoric of the ‘aestheticised confessional truth’ and, at the same time, in a bizarre contortion lays claim to other exercises. Comfortably seated in a chair of avant-garde design and wearing a pair of green trainers matching her sweater, she begins to unravel her life. We learn that she has a rare condition called ‘situs inversus’ (the internal organs are the wrong way round), a condition that has shaped her life and ‘is present in her work’. We also learn in the course of this interview her obsession with musculature and begin to catch glimpses of a troubled sexual identity which could be traced back to her father’s absence or the lack of water in the village where she grew up. It transpires that she was adopted by a family of contortionists although she was never in a position to carry out any of the moves. In a moment of interpretosis we hear that art is something similar to contortionism: ‘it is like turning your body around, the skin, the guts, the muscles, to make something simple, something that able people do with the ease with which they put a shirt on’. Indeed, that was what Josefina, the little rat in Kafka’s tale, did when she screeched like her fellow rats even though she was not only surrounded by silence but also placed on a stage. Art is something simple that ends up in a muddle: a knot (borromeo), something symptomatic. ‘The truth is –she states with a mixture of coldness and disenchantment- that today’s art, where everything is word based, is not the ideal place for people like me...’ The truth, again? But have we not just heard a creator go on about her illnesses, her traumatic memories and other nonsense? Because we understand that it is the woman sitting down who is responsible for the art, her and not that other seen projected on the big screen enacting phenomenal contortions. It has suddenly occurred to me that perhaps it would have been a good idea to put Agrela in touch with the versatile writer although in a letter addressed to me she seems to have no problem explaining the installation: ‘Conceptually speaking my concerns here are no different to those present in everything I’ve done lately. After all the series I did on the back of my alter ego super-heroine, where I focused on the figure of the artist as one not only bestowed with a gift but also with the moral imperative to develop it, I have now moved on to consider the motives, true or false, propelling art and the artists. Biography in general and the way in which biographical data has often been presented as a valid means to throw light on the artist’s trajectory seems to me a kind of shorthand used by historians who do not really understand the creative process. So I have invented a biography and forged data to fit that fiction’ So why do you say that, ‘the word is no good for people like me’ when you express yourself like an open book? It could be that all of Angeles Agrela’s works are but a meditation on the state of that Lacanian mirror linked to the legendary psicastenia where the reaction before an alienating space could be camouflage, thus this artist made herself blend with the floor, the tesseras of a swimming pool or the natural foliage. Vigorexia could be understood as another way of adapting to the environment that is no longer cultural but culturalist: when flexing becomes more pertinent than re-flection. En los espléndidos cuadros vemos, de nuevo, los ejercicios de la contorsionista que parece atravesada por palos, arrojando 32 and her disguise as a wrestler became but another stage in her elliptical way of meditating on the identity game. Being a lucid commentator on her own work, she feels the need to free herself from a critical hermeneutics bent on establishing taxonomies that, in a final analysis, prove worthless. I dare write these lines top of my head aware that I am myself one of those unsavoury characters who bank on biography, in para-psychoanalytical style, to cover up my shortcomings when it comes to looking at art. I fear not, however, all that display of meat for sale. Those monstrous muscles marked by veins about to burst, painted with morbidity and displayed across one of the gallery walls shrinking the viewer, imposing a punctualisation of the ‘ideal corporal’ that is nothing if not exhibitionism. But that artificially constructed corporality, one that goes beyond simple athletic practice, is no less sinister (familiar as well as strange) than the viscera she uses to make tablecloths and napkins. It could be that this might explain the atrophy of taste, in the same way that the oesophagus of the confessional artist might suffer from occasional paralyses that render swallowing difficult. There is never any desire to wallow in the shockingly disgusting (that aesthetic of filth so much in vogue); instead, Agrela wants to guide us to a place where we can understand that in the search and ‘passion for profundity’ we lose sight of the pleasures of the skin. Depth and fundamentals, those obsessions of metaphysicians, do not overwhelm in the manner of the mystics but instead returns us to the inclemency of the events themselves. Do we have to take any notice of what we read in a foreign language that is artistically preponderant: ‘turn your body inside out?’ In the wonderful paintings we see once more the exercises of the contortionist that seems skewered with sticks, poring out liquids blue and greenish (vomiting paint?) or surrounded by cloud-like forms, foams or sordid wind-breaking. Half-naked female bodies that, in my opinion, do not transmit any eroticism. In reality, what they have to do is reach the limit of what is bearable while maintaining the appearance of being ‘something simple’. If Agrela compares the practice of contortionism with the ease with which a man in the street puts his shirt on, I dare make an analogy between my writing and the experience afforded by throwing open the pages of a dictionary. Thus, blocked momentarily somewhere in the meandering line of this text (folding itself double), I have decided to open the Sebastian de Covarrubias’s Tesoro de la Lengua Castellana o Espanola and find that there is no entry for ‘contortionist’ or any other semantically linked. But, being stubborn, I persevere and, looking literally in the place where ‘contortionist’ should be, I come across ‘contrahacer’. I copy straight away everything lying therein: ‘[Contrahacer] Counteract. Imitate something natural or artificial. Contrahecho, imitated in such a manner. Contrahecho, with a physical disability; quasi contrahecho’. Here is what I was looking for, the key to the machination on the truth in art Angeles Agrela has embarked on. In the same way that Marcel Duchamp pro- fuera de sí líquidos verdosos o azules (¿vomitando pintura?) o rodeada de formas nubosas, espumas o sórdidas ventosidades. Renuncié, desde el principio, a buscar las “verdades” en este fake porque incluso podía suceder que 36 mised a reward for whomsoever could catch him, entangled as he was with no end of doubles (the most important and verbose being Rrose Selavy) and Sherry Levine justified his ‘grabbing’ impulse to the fact that he saw his parents fornicating as a child, Agrela confesses that her ‘rare disease’ is at the root of everything she does. I tell you, they are all a bunch of incurable liars. Thank goodness Bruce Nauman comes to the rescue of all of us who are close to the most complete of disappointments by reminding us of that prodigious neon sentence: ‘the true artist helps the world by unravelling mystic truths’. But now that I write it I feel an even greater restlessness. Finally, is this little more than the revelation of the sublime beauty of an ordinary mouse following a protracted period in the dark? Or will it suffice to know that the flash of light was nothing more than the reflection from a bear advert? I return full of anxiety to my love of dictionaries. ‘Contorsión. (From lat. contorsio, onis). f. Forced action, irregular and convulsive movement originating in either a sudden pain or other physical or moral causes.// Also grotesque, ridiculous gesture, of persons given to histrionics or minstrels.’ Further, judging by Angeles Agrela’s recent work, contortion is no stranger to artists or perhaps what I mean is that those prodigious muscles (a thing as straightforward as ‘putting a shirt on’) are ridiculous things made to pass on as the height of the sublime. ‘Of the things I say -I reread Angeles Agrela’s letter- a great many are lies, but there are also some truths in there. In the midst of all that I consider matters on art and on myself as an artist, both ultimately following the same criteria.’ I gave up from the beginning to search the ‘truths’ in this fake because it could be that the artist herself was lying to me in the letter and it happens that everything she is saying in the video is true or vice versa. Do I have to believe Angeles Agrela is dyslexic? Is this the ‘reason’ behind her intuitive approach? It was Nietzsche who in his On Truth and Lying said that in the same way that the concept is the necropolis of intuition art is the supreme and ultimate fiction. Angeles Agrela’s contrahecho tale takes us from the testimonial to the visceral, from the muscular to contortionism, but above all casts a poisoned bait to the ‘interpreter’. Her self-portrait as traumatised artist is one of the more serious jokes that I have come across for a while. It would no longer make sense, except as an easy parody, to cut off one’s ear (that sign of a kidnapping) above all when a set of cables link the subject with a kind of seismograph that will determine, feeding as it does so an appetite for voyeurism, whether the speaker lies or tells the truth. In the end, it is that same legitimising spirit behind the ‘who cares/it’s all the same’. While on a walk this morning trying to find the thread to the machinations of this creator I decided, I do not lie, to open at random the book The Pre-Socratic Philosophers I had just bought for my son Ernesto. My bibliomania came in handy and was kind to me because right there, criss-crossing his alleged obscurity, was none other than Heraclitus. The first thing I read was an anecdote telling of how one day, having retired from public life, he found himself playing with some children in the temple to Artemisa and, on being surrounded by a bunch of surprised Ephesians, he said,‘What astounds you, perverse people? 38 not better than being involved with you in politics? How right was the philosopher who said that as a young man he knew nothing and as a grown up he knew everything. He resorted to children to cure himself of dropsy, the disease he suffered from: they covered him in manure (to remove the damp) and right where he lay he died the following day and was buried in the agora. For his part, Neanto de Cizico says that, on not being able to remove the manure, he underwent such transformation that the dogs failed to recognise them, whereupon they devoured him. Pathetic and at the same time tragic the destiny of the real philosopher. Do not ask me what the connection is between this story and the artistic contortions of Angeles Agrela, specially when she appears to have escaped both the eschatological fate and the knot that interpretation itself creates. ‘I have not used muscles and flesh as metaphor for anything. They look like muscles; that’s what they are.’ We hear this in the interview but nothing dampens the spirit of the patient of that other disease he transforms into writing. I search, ludicrous I know, for that delinquent (enjoying the impunity of everything to do with art) mixing truth with lies. I have the machine ready to start compiling his other biography.
