VIDA MISMA

celebración de ese día sin
la presencia física de mis
padres, los licenciados
Luis González Valle y
Lydia Ríos
Ocasio
quienes fallecieron a
pocas horas, entre uno y
otro, el pasado 14 de mayo de este año.
Casados por 69 años, compartieron más que eso sin separarse
ni un día, salvo en sus hospitalizaciones. Un matrimonio a
emular y unos ciudadanos ejemplares, parte de una
generación de la que aprendimos eso que muchos adolecen:
valores, principios, sensibilidad, compromiso, palabra, seres
productivos, reconocedores de los talentos y aportaciones de
sus semejantes y motores de la economía isabelina, pero con
sencillez y dedicación .Familiares, amigos y un pueblo que
les conoció, nos acompañaron en sus actos fúnebres. Solo los
que le conocieron estaban y solo esos hacían falta; ni más,
ni menos.
Nuestro agradecimiento a quienes les cuidaron con esmero,
María, Merce, Yeya, Helen, Jeiza, Fabiola, Myriam, Tata, a
la amiga y Dra. Marta Hau, al Hospicio San Francisco y la
Administración de Veteranos.

Otro fuerte de este ‘peón’ de hoy, lo fue el Voleibol Femenino
y Masculino que se celebraba en la Plaza de Recreo y voluntario.
En el Básquet Isabelino dejó el pellejo en las categorías
menores, junto a Radai Mendoza, Che Ponce y Chanin García.
No solo desarrolló atletas [masculino y femenino], sino que
decenas de profesionales ilustres en sus diferentes ramas
agradecen la disciplina, fervor, educación, que los hacen hoy
ciudadanos destacados y donde Paquín fue instrumento.
-Mi sentir sobre el Beisbol Local-
Ya he hecho un recuento
deportivo del ayer bastante
amplio. Continúo con mis conocimientos
deportivos de épocas más recientes.
Comenzaré con las épocas de 1960 al 2014.
Ya ustedes amigos lectores sabrán de los
héroes y los villanos de ayer. En ese 1960
renació el auge por el Baloncesto Local y
Pepe
el Voleibol. Aquí surgió la enorme y
gigantesca figura de Paquín Abreu. Un héroe deportivo olvidado
por muchos. Paquín sustituyó al
maestro de maestros, Orlando
Irizarry. Lo hizo con orgullo,
dedicación,
valentía,
perseverancia, conocimiento de
sobra, sin guisos y chanchullos,
lealtad a su pueblo, colores,
historia e identidad deportiva.
Todo, todo, lo hizo como
voluntario. Sin palas ni
beneficios de nadie. Ese es el
perfil de mi héroe deportivo y
compañero de muchas luchas.
Aun tiene la capacidad física,
mental y entusiasmo de cuando
era joven. No se le ha hecho
justicia en el pueblo de Isabela,
que le vio nacer. Actualmente lo encuentro laborando y celando
el vetusto, obsoleto y chatarra Félix Mantilla. Tiene la capacidad
para aportar en grande al deporte que tanto ama y que tanto dio
voluntariamente. Con todo y su gran resume pro deportes, hoy
lo han postergado con un trabajito de ‘peón’ en el DRD local.
Los méritos le sobran y aplico la frase “Prohibido
El mejor equipo de Beisbol clase A fue el de 1958. Por error se
omitió los nombres de: Rafaelito ‘Pocholo’ González 1B,
Ramón Villanueva 2B y Michí Amador 3B. Todos eran de
Isabela. El equipo más poderoso e inigualable y con mejor
record fueron Los Gallitos de Isabela de 1990-1991. Su
apoderado fue Juan Samalot Jr. Consiguieron dos Campeonatos
seguidos en la Doble A Juvenil de PR y establecieron un record
imposible de romper con 46 cuadrangulares en una temporada.
Uno de sus miembros conectó 19 y lo fue Benji Candelaria de
Hatillo. Se dirigían solitos. Samalot en 4 años logró dos
campeonatos de PR y dos campeonatos Regionales. Bueno
¿verdad?

Gratos recuerdos en los años 1974 -1977
Yo tengo gratos recuerdos de Don Luis cuando tenía su farmacia.
Estudiando en el Colegio S. A. en High School nos permitian
salir al área de la Plaza a almorzar. Yo tenía de costumbre
almorzar en “Doritas” y luego no falla mi visita a la farmacia a
comprar un dulce. El siempre fue super amable conmigo y luego
me enteré que mi Abuela Doña Rafaela Chaves Gonzáles (Fela)
había ido a hablar con el Licenciado para que estuviera pendiente
de mi. En aquellos tiempos nos tenían “vigilados”. Luego casada
con mis hijos me encontraba a Don Luis en el Club del USCG
cenando con Doña Lydia. Por su apreciación Don Luis le habló
a Aura y Betsy y les dijo que si en algún momento cogieran
clases de arte que fuera conmigo, Alicia Sotomayor. Así conocí
a Aura y Betsy las cuales fueron mis estudiantes de Acuarela y
ahora muy buenas amigas, las cuales aprecio mucho y lamento
mucho su pérdida de parte mía y de toda mi familia.

mujer estudió en la UPR y terminó farmacia pero antes de todo
esto, ya la vida le tenía reservada al compañero con el que
compartiría todas sus vivencias y le haría sus sueños realidad,
Luis González Valle.
Lydia, fuiste una reina en tu Castillo y disfrutaste tu vida a
plenitud junto a Luis y toda la familia y amistades. ¡Descansa
en paz junto al amor de tu vida, Luis!

Isabela, the western -most town on the north coast, has a bundle of places and beaches to visit, surfing, a forest reserve, caves,
lakes, rivers and historical sites, are a few to mention.
There’s a small bathing resort known as Guajataca. On Route 113, you will find also El Pastillo, Villa Pesquera and Sardinera
beach.
El Pastillo is the first beach to your right side of the road, small bath and is part of a new golf resort, called Royal Isabela which
is the best and biggest of the Caribbean. You won’t find many signs that show you which route to take; so feel free to ask neighbors.
Worth to try the food at the Restaurant at Royal Isabela.
Once in downtown, near the Plaza, take a right to Rd. 466, and go straight to Bajuras Ward. Almost at the end of the Road is a
big complex called Isabela Beach Court. Take the road to your right where you will find a small fishing village, Villa Pesquera
and the Sardinera Beach. Villa Pesquera is a small bunch of nice-looking kiosks, where you can get some good, reasonably-priced
local food, drinks and just enjoy the area. During the week you can find some action but when it turns quite interesting is during
Friday and Saturdays nights and Sunday afternoons. There is live music, cheap food and drinks, motorcycles and locals. There
are also food kiosks and a small fish market where you’ll find the catch of the day and lobsters. Sardinera beach is a small beach
suitable for swimming, especially for children, because it is protected from most of the rough waves. The sand sometimes has
trash.
Going thru Rd. 466, along the Paseo Lineal, with a sign that shows the unpaved entrance, the next beach is Poza de Teodoro.
This is a relative small swimming hole, protected from the pounding ocean waves and visited for local’s family gatherings. Avoid
it during long weekend, lots of four tracks, people, noise and trash. It is beautiful and you may have a great time if you visit it
during the week or normal weekends.
On your way to Montones beach, you can find Middles beach, famous for the worldwide surfing competitions sponsored by the
Tourism Company and other private entities.
Montones [the rock] is great for swimming as well as snorkeling, but you should be careful for its underwater currents. In Montones
you will find Villas del Mar Hau Guest House with its beautiful beach cottages. This guest house is part of the Paradores de
Puerto Rico and it is affordable, clean and a great family resort. Great sunset views from the rock.
Continuing the same road, next is Jobos Beach, great for surfing but as Montones you will have to very careful because of the
dangerous underwater currents. There are some private parking lots [recommended] for an affordable fee during long weekends
and summer. Otherwise you have to park in the street. If that’s the case, don’t leave valuables in your vehicle. Next to Jobos
beach is the Pozo de Jacinto, a dangerous but beautiful blow hole worth seeing.
Out of Jobos and into Rd 466, continue straight ahead until a curve with a sign of Villa Montaña resort; make a right and continue
thru the Road. Park in the street and walk to your right where you will find Shacks beach [el Baño de los Bravo]. There is no
parking, no signals except for some sign of Villa Montaña’s Resort and of Ola Lola, a local bar. Be careful where you park and
again, no valuables in your vehicle. If you are planning to snorkel try it safely; if scuba, go to one of the local experts. This is the
most spectacular beach to snorkel. You can find lots of colored fish, manatees, squids, etc.

There is a great variety of restaurants in and around Isabela: Puerto Rican, seafood, Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Mexican and
international cuisine. Remember: eating and drinking water in Puerto Rico is safe.
Fast foods: Mc D, BKg, KFC, Taco Maker, Wendy’s, Subway. Most of them in Rd. No. 2 near Isabela Mall
Puerto Rican cuisine: Las 3 F’s of Piro and Patria; Lechonera of Onix; El Timbiriche of Daly; and Pastelillos [turnovers] joints
in Jobos and Estación Avenue in town.
Tapas and drinks: Villa Pesquera is the cheapest
Asian Restaurants: Pedro’s Sushi in Rd.4466. Take out and open gazebo, Fridays and Saturdays

Italian/Pizza: Some of them along Rd. 110 in Aguadilla; brick oven in the Cheesecake Shop in Rd. No. 2 and also check Pellot
Pizzas in 3 different locations in Aguadilla, my favorite near gate 1 at Ramey; Wilnelly’s, Pizza 2 Go in downtown Isabela and
Brendy’s Pizza in Jobos. Almost all of them make deliveries.

Do You Remember?
DYR-Luis González Valle, a man of peace and
gentleness.

Today we are going to dedicate this column to extend a tribute
to a friend, and their fellow family members, as well who are
mentors to our community and one of the most adorable
families in the history of our beloved town of Isabela, Puerto
Rico. Their profession has always being hiding behind an
international emblem enhanced by a pestle and mortar, the
profession of being a pharmacist.
For a moment, let’s first talk about their profession, which
according to Merriam Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, a
pharmacist is a person licensed to engage in pharmacy. A little
bit of more description is that, they are health professional who
are experts in the use of medicines; they also participate in
disease-state management, where they optimize and monitor
the drug therapy or interpret results, in collaboration with
physicians, medical scientists, and pharmaceutical institutions.
Lydia, Betsy and sister-in-law, Elba have had mingled feelings
of humility because we don’t know when our Heavenly Father
is going to overtake any of us. An when and where such of an
episode would be occurred in our lives, we would leave behind
those whom we love deeply, and surely sadness would brings
tears to our eyes, but the Lord expect that when he said, “Though
shalt live together in love, insomuch that thou shalt weep for the
loss of them that would return to me.” (D&C 42:45).
If I will leave this column today a better man because of what I
am conveying here to you, my beloved readers, it will be a
blessing. What a journey it has been to have had reviewed before
us the lives and labors of good people. It has strengthened our
faith and our testimonies. Our soul has been subdued, and our
heart made tender through deep spiritual insight and the Christlike attributes of these people. We hope that they also would be
emulated by future generations by their examples of noble and
sincere character.
NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: Luis passed away this past 14 of
May 2014, along with his wife of 69 yrs, Lydia Rios Ocasio. May
they rest in peace.
Their main responsibilities are to advance into prescribing
medication and in providing members of our communities,
with health advice and services. These essential professionals
have many areas of expertise and are a critical source of
medical knowledge in clinics, hospitals, medical laboratories
and community pharmacies throughout the world.
Without variation and for many years, the people of Isabela
have had the privilege of being assisted in this matter by these
people of peace and gentleness, Luis González Valle, his
beloved wife Lydia Ríos Ocasio, and sister-in law, Elba Ríos
Ocasio. It must be a joy and a blessing to all who have any of
the blood in this good people flowing in their veins, once stated
by my late father, Rafael Rodríguez Estronza.
For over fifty years of being considered myself by them, as an
adopted son, hence through my wife, Milagritos, whose
maternal grandmother, Cecilia Ríos Vargas, was the single
sibling of Lydia and Elba’s father, Salome Ríos Vargas, we
would like to pay some deserved tribute without being bias,
and by your indulgence, through our column. As we kindly
pause for a moment, I would like to express thanks to all of
them for allowing me enjoying such of a privilege.
The journey of memories meaningfully conveyed through the
years together, has also being a significant component in the
lives of our children. Luis González Valle is the son of latest,
Francísco “Páncho” González Román and Francisca “Páncha”
Valle Ruiz, and his siblings are: Ramón, Esther, Sárah Hilda,
Jáime, Arsenia, Efraín “Rachi,” David, Maria Nylka, and José
Antonio “Pichón.” Lydia and Elba Ríos Ocasio siblings were
Nellie and Hugo, and their parents were late Salome Ríos
Vargas and Providencia “Provi” Ocasio Martínez.
On particular occasions, Luis, Lydia, their daughters, Aura
