The Silver Lake Neighborhood Council recognizes the legitimacy of the autonomous zone in Chiapas, Mexico held by the indigenous Mayan group the Zapatistas. We stand in solidarity with the Zapatista’s intentions of a creating a world that adheres to principals of horizontal government. We recognize and celebrate their leadership in working toward a living model of dignity, democracy, and justice. In response to the May 2, 2014 paramilitary attack on the Zapatista community of La Realidad and the killing of community member and educational promoter (teacher) Compañero Galeano, we the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council, publicly condemn this attack and killing, in the strongest terms possible. We also call on all other Los Angeles Neighborhood Councils and others LA City representatives to condemn this attack and killing and express solidarity.
