Lemons and Lemonade
Our class will read “Lemons and Lemonade.” The selection is written as a story,
but its purpose is to explain how supply and demand work in the marketplace. In
the story, a girl named Karly opens a lemonade stand. At first, she makes a lot of
money. When the weather changes, however, the customers stop coming. The weather
eventually improves, but competitors set up their own stands, taking business away
from her.
After your child has finished reading “Lemons and Lemonade,” you can help him
or her understand this story by discussing how competition works. Ask your child
to choose a product that he or she likes, such as a favorite food or toy. What factors
are likely to increase or decrease demand for this product? If competitors offer a
similar product, how will the price and quality of the different products be affected by
increased competition?

Selection Vocabulary
Your child will be studying the following vocabulary words in the upcoming week.
Please review the meanings of these words with your child: stack—a pile; profit—
the amount of money left after all the costs of running a business have been paid;
expenses—plural form of expense: money spent to buy or do something, cost;
demand—the desire for a product or service; balance—to make equal in weight,
amount, or force; supply—a quantity of something ready to be used; product—
anything that is made or created; competition—the act of trying to win or gain
something from someone else.
Spelling
Your child will be studying the following spelling words in the upcoming week. Please
review the spellings of these words with your child: fall, caught, faster, August, talk,
small, fought, yawn, bought, thinnest, hawk, taught, chalk, taller, auto.

Nuestra clase va a leer “Lemons and Lemonade”. Esta selección está escrita como
un cuento, pero su propósito es explicar cómo funciona la oferta y la demanda en el
mercado laboral. En la selección, una niña llamada Karly abre un puesto de limonada.
Al principio, hace mucho dinero. Cuando el clima cambia, los clientes dejan de asistir.
Eventualmente, el tiempo mejora, pero la competencia instala sus propios puestos,
ganando sus clientes.
Después de que su hijo(a) haya terminado de leer “Lemons and Lemonade”,
puede ayudarle a entender la selección comentando cómo funciona la competencia.
Pídale que escoja un producto que le guste, como por ejemplo su comida o su juguete
favorito. ¿Qué factores cree que probablemente provocarán un aumento o una
