«Zaccheus, come down quickly for I must stay at your house today»
Today, it looks as if the Evangelic narrative was the accomplishment of the parable of the Pharisee and the tax
collector (cf. Lk 18:9-14). Humbly and sincerely, the tax collector was praying from the bottom of his heart: «O God,
be merciful to me a sinner» (Lk 18:13); and, today, we contemplate how Jesus Christ honors Zaccheus’ repentance by
forgiving him, the Jericho chief tax collector, a wealthy and influential man, though hated and underrated by his neighbors, who felt bled by him: «Zaccheus, come down quickly for I must stay at your house today» (Lk 19:5). The divine
forgiveness provokes the conversion of Zaccheus; this is one of the originalities of the Gospel: God’s forgiveness is
free; it is not that God forgives us because of our conversion, but the other way around: God’s mercy sort of impels us
to feel grateful and to reciprocate accordingly.
As Jesus, on his way to Jerusalem, passes through Jericho, Jesus passes through our life, today and every day,
and calls us by name. Zaccheus had never seen Jesus before, but he had heard of him and was curious to know more
about such a famous master. Jesus, instead, did know Zaccheus and the miseries of his life. Jesus was aware of the fact
that Zaccheus had enriched himself to the injury of others and was, therefore, hated and rejected by his fellow citizens;
this is why He passed through Jericho, to rescue him from that well: «The Son of Man has come to seek and to save the
lost» (Lk 19:10).
The encounter between the Master and the tax collector totally changed the latter’s life. After having listened
to this Gospel, ponder over the opportunity God is offering you, which you cannot neglect: Jesus Christ passes through
your life and calls you by name because He loves you and He wants to save you. Which well did you fall in? As Zaccheus
climbed up to that tree to better see Jesus, you can now climb up to the Cross along with Jesus and you will know who
is He, you will know the immensity of his love, inasmuch as if «The chief among the Publicans is here fitly introduced:
For who will hereafter despair of himself, now that he attains to grace who gained his living by fraud?» (St. Ambrose).

“JUNTOS CONSTRUYENDO EL REINO DE DIOS”
«Zaqueo, baja en seguida, porque hoy tengo que alojarme en tu casa»
Hoy, la narración evangélica parece como el cumplimiento de la parábola del fariseo y el publicano (cf. Lc
18,9-14). Humilde y sincero de corazón, el publicano oraba en su interior: «Oh Dios, ten compasión de mí, que soy un
pecador» (Lc 18,13); y hoy contemplamos cómo Jesucristo perdona y rehabilita a Zaqueo, el jefe de publicanos de Jericó,
un hombre rico e influyente, pero odiado y despreciado por sus vecinos, que se sentían extorsionados por él: «Zaqueo, baja
en seguida, porque hoy tengo que alojarme en tu casa» (Lc 19,5). El perdón divino lleva a Zaqueo a convertirse; he aquí
una de las originalidades del Evangelio: el perdón de Dios es gratuito; no es tanto por causa de nuestra conversión que
Dios nos perdona, sino que sucede al revés: la misericordia de Dios nos mueve al agradecimiento y a dar una respuesta.
Como en aquella ocasión Jesús, en su camino a Jerusalén, pasaba por Jericó. Hoy y cada día, Jesús pasa por
nuestra vida y nos llama por nuestro nombre. Zaqueo no había visto nunca a Jesús, había oído hablar de Él y sentía curiosidad por saber quién era aquel maestro tan célebre. Jesús, en cambio, sí conocía a Zaqueo y las miserias de su vida.
Jesús sabía cómo se había enriquecido y cómo era odiado y marginado por sus convecinos; por eso, pasó por Jericó para
sacarle de ese pozo: «El Hijo del Hombre ha venido a buscar y a salvar lo que estaba perdido» (Lc 19,10).
El encuentro del Maestro con el publicano cambió radicalmente la vida de este último. Después de haber oído
el Evangelio, piensa en la oportunidad que Dios te brinda hoy y que tú no debes desaprovechar: Jesucristo pasa por tu
vida y te llama por tu nombre, porque te ama y quiere salvarte, ¿en qué pozo estás atrapado? Así como Zaqueo subió a
un árbol para ver a Jesús, sube tú ahora con Jesús al árbol de la cruz y sabrás quien es Él, conocerás la inmensidad de
su amor, ya que «elige a un jefe de publicanos: ¿quién desesperará de sí mismo cuando éste alcanza la gracia?» (San
Ambrosio).
