NIOSA volunteers are the heart and soul (and
backbone!) of A Night In Old San Antonio
By NIOSA Chair Patti Zaiontz
As a child, I remember my parents
preparing to “go to Fiesta.”
My mother would outfit herself in
a lovely ruffled blouse and a heavily
beaded and sequined circle skirt.
She would put her long hair up in a
chignon and insert a lovely Spanish
comb over which she draped a long
lace mantilla. My dad would don a
classic Western suit over a Western
shirt with bolo tie. He’d wear his
Lucchese boots and top it off with
his smart Stetson hat.
They looked stunning and off they
would go to “Fiesta.” I later learned
that “Fiesta” meant “A Night In Old
San Antonio.” As a teenager, I was
finally allowed to attend NIOSA.
My friends and I roamed the NIOSA
grounds enjoying the sights, sounds
and aromas of all the areas as a
“patron,” until a friend invited me
to volunteer in the Churros booth
in Mexican Market area.
I quickly learned that volunteer-
ing in the Churro booth was fun,
even if messy! The booth chairman
shared the purpose of the Conservation Society and how the proceeds
of NIOSA are used in the Society’s
mission to preserve historic landmarks, parks and traditions. I paid
my dues and never looked back—
and have never stopped volunteering for NIOSA and the Society!
I subsequently met my husband
Milton, who was also a member of
the Society and an active volunteer
at NIOSA along with his family. After we married, the Zaiontz
family quickly taught me there are
many Society functions beyond
NIOSA. As a family, we have always participated in many of those
programs, and now our children and
grandchildren join in, too—resulting in four generations of Society
members.
I learned the “behind the scenes”
logistics of NIOSA when my mother-in-law became NIOSA Chairman
in 1991. I then added more and
more responsibilities at NIOSA
and the Conservation Society—
culminating in my election as
2016 NIOSA Chairman/Society
Fourth VP.
Working to make NIOSA happen
has instilled a profound appreciation of how committed our volunteers are. They are the backbone of
NIOSA and are vital to the success
of our organization. My journey
began with an invitation to volunteer, which led to membership,
which has led to where I am today.
So, I invite you to learn what the
Conservation Society does, as well
as consider volunteering at NIOSA
and/or joining the Society.
We especially need folks that
have the time to help with the staging that occurs the week before and
days after the event. Visit the San
Antonio Conservation Society or
the NIOSA website to learn more—
and ¡Viva NIOSA!
Patti Zaiontz is the fourth vice
president of the San Antonio Conservation Society and 2016 NIOSA
chairman.

Fiesta Fiesta kicks off 125th anniversary
of San Antonio’s biggest celebration
By Christina Acosta
[email protected]
This year, Fiesta San Antonio will
begin with a bang of food, fun and
culture as festivities start to come
together for the opening ceremony
of the event.
Fiesta Fiesta will jump start Fiesta
San Antonio’s 125th anniversary with
an unforgettable extravaganza on
Alamo Plaza on Thursday, April 14
from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Highlighting the ceremony will
be a reenactment of the event where
Fiesta began in 1891, showcasing the
110 participating nonprofit organiza-
tions that are under the umbrella of
the San Antonio Fiesta Commission.
“We believe that cultivating history
into the opening ceremony is important for our guests. We want to prepare
them for a week full of fun, so we will
start off things right by bringing in
many musical guests, as well as pay
an ode to the woman who started this
week of festivities,” Publicity Ranch
Representative John G. Bloodsworth
told La Prensa. “If it weren’t for everybody who came together after her
and kept the tradition going for all of
these years, there would be no Fiesta
and no exposure of what San Antonio
can offer.”
At hand to celebrate the festivities
include San Antonio’s United States
Air Force Band, Top Flight, who will
reverberate from the main stage as Fiesta salutes the Armed Forces’ impact
on Fiesta celebrations dating back to
1891 when the 23rd Infantry Band
led the first Battle of Flowers Parade.
A special musical performance by
Grammy award-winning Tejano
performer Little Joe and a few of his
“friends” will include the release of
his new song, “San Antonio.”
Fiesta San Antonio is a party with a
purpose, with funds raised by participating nonprofit organizations providing services to San Antonio citizens
throughout the year. In fact, the tradiSee Fiesta Fiesta on page 9

Inspiration for the first Fiesta San
Antonio celebration came from Ellen
Maury Slayden, the wife of a U.S.
Congressman. She suggested that
San Antonio have a “Flower Battle”
modeled after a parade that she had
seen one summer in Valencia, Spain.
A group of volunteers planned a
flower celebration that would keep
Texas history fresh in the minds of
future generations, paying tribute to
the fallen heroes of the Alamo and
those that fought at the Battle of San
Jacinto, gaining Texas independence
from Mexico.
San Antonio had a population of

CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION AWARENESS MONTH
Center for Miracles: Because they
cannot speak for themselves
Courtesy of Center
for Miracles
“Because they cannot speak
for themselves, we must speak
for them.” That is why The
Children’s Hospital of San Antonio – Center for Miracles was
created, said Medical Director,
Dr. James Lukefahr, one of only
200 child abuse pediatricians in
the United States.
The Center for Miracles provides timely, accurate and comprehensive assessments of children who are possible victims of
abuse or neglect. The Center’s
goal is to identify victims early
so injuries and deaths can be
avoided and to rule out the possibility of abuse in other situations. In 2015, there were nearly
5,000 confirmed cases of abuse
or neglect in Bexar County. Even
more tragically, four of those
children died as a result.
The Center for Miracles offers
a complete medical assessment
of the child and their siblings:
photos and radiology images
are taken to document signs of
abuse, short-term counseling
is offered to the child and staff
members provide expert court
testimony if called upon by the
Bexar County District Attorney’s office.
Most cases are referred to the
Center by Child Protective Services (CPS), however, referrals
may also come from a physician, law enforcement officers
and forensic nurse examiners
providing examinations in the
Emergency Department at The
Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, which has the only dedicated pediatric forensic nurse
examiner program in the region.
The Center for Miracles is part
of the Forensic Assessment Center Network with six locations
in Texas, all working together
to provide forensic medical
consultations, case consultations
with CPS, as well as training to
CPS caseworkers and health care
providers.
In 2009, the Texas Legislature
established the Texas Medical
Child Abuse Resources and Education System (MEDCARES)
program to help improve how
communities and hospitals work
together to identify, diagnose
and treat children who have
been abused or neglected. Nine
of these centers exist throughout
Texas today, and The Children’s
Hospital of San Antonio is
among those sites.
“The forensic nurses are all
extensively trained in identifying injuries that may be the result
of abuse, that may not be acci-
dental, and they’re also trained
how to respond to these cases
that come to our emergency
department,” Lukefahr added.
“Our hope at the Center for
Miracles is to gain a better understanding of the child abuse
epidemic in our community so
we can protect the lives of innocent children,” Lukefahr said.
Anyone who suspects a child
is being abused or neglected
is required by law to contact
the authorities. You can call
the Texas Child Abuse Hotline
at 1 (800) 252-5400 or in an
emergency, call 911. For more

St. Jude’s Ranch for
Children opens its doors
in support of Child Abuse
Prevention Month
Special to La Prensa
St. Jude’s Ranch for Children
(SJRC) recently hosted an open
house showcasing their facility and
special programs on April 7 at their
Bulverde campus.
During the open house, visitors
were able to tour the facility at their
convenience and learn more about
the programs St. Jude’s Ranch for
Children offers to help children
and families heal from trauma and
abuse. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and visitors were
encouraged to wear shades of blue
for support.
St. Jude’s Ranch for Children,
a nonprofit foster care and adoption agency that primarily serves
Bexar County, aims to find loving
homes for neglected children. The
mission of St. Jude’s Ranch for
Children is to transform the lives of
abused and at-risk children, young
adults and families by empowering
them to create new chances, new
choices and new hope in a caring
community.
The programs offered at St.
Jude’s Ranch are all inclusive and
by offering a continuum of care
for children and families, SJRC
is able to break the cycle of abuse
and neglect by mending spirits and
renewing hope.
“It takes a village to raise a child
and it takes a supportive community for us to be able to do what
we do and do it well. We consider
ourselves experts on children’s
issues, raising children and the
overall mental health of children,”
said Erika Boyd, director of development.
According to the Texas Depart-
ment of Family and Protective
Services, 8,012 total abuse cases
occurred in the greater San Antonio
area in 2014. Annually, St. Jude’s
Ranch for Children cares for 200
of these neglected children. Their
village is raising the next generation of thought leaders, political
figures, societal contributors and
well-rounded human beings and
desires more community support
to effectively do so.
“While we have been providing
excellent service for almost 30
years, the last year has been transformational for SJRC. We opened
a third location in San Antonio,
began providing adoption services
and worked to raise our profile
in the local communities that we
serve. We can’t wait to share with
you all more about who we are and
what we do to end the cycle of child
abuse in the lives of those that call
SJRC home,” said Tara Roussett,
executive director.
St. Jude’s Ranch for Children is
a 501(c)(3) organization that helps
transform the lives of abused, neglected and homeless children and
young adults, ages newborn to 25
years old. It does this by providing a family living environment,
preserving the sibling bond and
supplying the tools to break the
cycle of abuse.
The ultimate goal is to help these
individuals find a forever family or
achieve self-sufficiency. Approximately 60 percent of the children
have been physically abused, 40
percent sexually abused, many
have suffered both physical and
sexual abuse, and 100 percent have
been neglected.

for neglected children. (Courtesy photo)
All that’s required is
room in your home.
And room in your heart.
Last year in Bexar County, over 2,700 children
were unable to be placed in foster care because
of lack of licensed homes.
The solution begins with you.
The Children’s Shelter can provide you with
specialized training and around the clock
professional support. For more details,
call 210.212.2590 or visit us online at

the need is a parent.

Manu Ginóbili: “Spurs optimistas para los playoffs”
Por José I. Franco
[email protected]
“Creo que somos quienes somos. Esperamos jugar mejor que
esta noche en los dos partidos que
restan de la temporada regular
para así comenzar los playoffs
en buen estado de ánimo y con
optimismo, porque hemos venido
jugando un buen baloncesto. Sé
que en dos partidos no vamos a
mejorar más nuestro estilo y plan
de juego. Estoy seguro que en
este partido (contra Warriors) se
cumplió con nuestro propósito de
mejorar de hacer mejor las cosas
sobre la duela. Ahora solo resta
Green, Andre Iguodala y Brandon Rush. (Foto, Franco)
(Foto, Franco)
En este encuentro los Spurs
dejaron el récord de 39 victorias
por 1 derrota en partidos locales
de temporada (ATT&T Center).
Ginóbili y el entrenador en jefe
Gregg Popovich dieron crédito a
alcanzar a imponer nueva marca
espectadores (AT&T Center) que
esperaban verlos sumar su triunfo
número 40.
Warriors jugaron gran defensiva
y ofensiva encabezada por el guar-
dia estelar Stephen Curry, quien
momentos. Solo esperamos que
todo finalice con bien para arrancar
jugando de la misma forma en los
playoffs”, dijo Curry, quien en la
última posesión del balón, faltando
décimas de segundos, decidió
no realizar disparo a la canasta,
quedándose con el esférico como
“premio” al equipo por haber
alcanzado la marca de 72-9, y de
paso ganarle a Spurs en casa para
acabar con mala racha, ya que Wa
rriors no ganaban en San Antonio
desde el 14 de febrero de 1997.
