Almost all nouns that end in o are masculine, and almost all nouns that end in a are feminine. There are two types of articles. The English word “the” is called a definite article because it is used to refer to a definite or specific person or thing—the girl, the school. The word “a” (an) is called an indefinite article because it refers to any person or thing, not a specific one—a girl, a school. The definite articles in Spanish are el and la. El is used with a masculine noun and la is used with a feminine noun. The indefinite articles are un and una.
