This text narrates the third “manifestation” of the Gospels:
the Nativity, the Epiphany, and today the revelation of
Jesus’ identity in his baptism. John proclaimed a baptism of
conversion for the forgiveness of sins. Before John, no Jew
had ever been baptized with a baptism of repentance.
Such penitential rite was not necessary for the Jews, sons of
Abraham, who had already been chosen. The baptism was
for the sinners, tax collectors, publicans, prostitutes or
anyone from Gentile background who wished to come into
the Jewish faith. Mark tells us in a simple way that Jesus
came from Nazareth and was also baptized by John. It is at
this moment that Jesus hears the statement “You are my
beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” In the Gospel of
Mark, these words are addressed only to Jesus. In contrast
to Matthew and Luke, this is a personal experience, and the
words of God are not heard by others. Jesus acts as the
Beloved Son, and begins his public ministry, not as a
triumphant, powerful Messiah, but as the Suffering Servant;
his throne will be sacrificial love, not temporal power. The
baptism of Jesus marks the beginning of a new era guided
by the loving action of the Spirit.
Today’s reading offers three significant messages:
· Through the life-giving baptism with the Holy Spirit, Jesus
will create a new people of God.
· The descent of the Spirit on Jesus means anointing him for
his ministry.
· God’s approval of Jesus is the assurance that Jesus will
fulfill his messianic mission of salvation.

For the children that are doing their first communion this year, we are going

Q. Grace at meals?
I have been wondering: what are the origins of
the prayer? And, do you have to say just that
prayer, or can you use different ones?
A. There is no prayer for grace at meals that Catholics
precisely say. One is free to speak in other words of
blessings and gratitude. However, there is a value in using memorized and
widely known prayer so that others can join in the recitation. For this
reason, Catholic rituals often set forth forms of prayers to facilitate communal prayer and to serve as models. Interestingly, what most Catholics
call “saying grace” is actually a prayer of blessing: “Bless us or Lord and
these, thy gifts…..” but the word “grace” comes from the Latin gratia,
meaning thanks or gratitude for a grace received. Thus “saying grace”
more properly refers to the prayer at the end of the meal which usually
begins, “ we give thanks almighty God for these and all your benefit, who
live and reign…” the tradition of saying a true “grace” at the end of the
meal is less common among Catholics today. The expression “say grace”
refers generally to any prayer said before as for the origin of the prayer, it
is not clear. It is listed in the Roman Ritual but without attribution. In the
Roman Ritual, the familiar portion, “bless us O Lord” is a part of a longer
rite that most surely emerged in a monastic setting.
The Baptism of the Lord
Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the
Baptism of Our Lord. This brings to an end the season of Christmas. The Church recalls Our Lord's
second manifestation or epiphany which occurred on
the occasion of His baptism in the Jordan. Jesus descended into the River to sanctify its waters and to
give them the power to beget sons of God. The event
takes on the importance of a second creation in
which the entire Trinity intervenes.
In the Eastern Church this feast is called Theophany
because at the baptism of Christ in the River Jordan
God appeared in three persons. The baptism of John
was a sort of sacramental preparatory for the Baptism of Christ. It moved men to sentiments of repentance and induced
them to confess their sins. Christ did not need the baptism of John. Although He appeared in the "substance of our flesh" and was recognized
"outwardly like unto ourselves", He was absolutely sinless and impeccable.
He conferred upon the water the power of the true Baptism which would
remove all the sins of the world: "Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him
Who takes away the sin of the world."
Many of the incidents which accompanied Christ's baptism are symbolical
of what happened at our Baptism. At Christ's baptism the Holy Spirit descended upon Him; at our Baptism the Trinity took its abode in our soul. At
His baptism Christ was proclaimed the "Beloved Son" of the Father; at our
Baptism we become the adopted sons of God. At Christ's baptism the heavens were opened; at our Baptism heaven was opened to us. At His baptism
Jesus prayed; after our Baptism we must pray to avoid actual sin.

En este texto se narra la tercera "manifestación" de los
Evangelios: la Natividad, la Epifanía, y hoy la revelación
de la identidad de Jesús en su bautismo. Juan predicó un
bautismo de conversión para el perdón de los pecados.
Antes de Juan, nunca habían bautizado con un bautismo
de arrepentimiento.
Tal acto penitencial no era necesario para los judíos, los
hijos de Abraham que ya habían sido elegidos. El bautismo era para los pecadores, recaudadores de impuestos,
los publicanos, prostitutas o cualquier persona de la gentilidad que deseaban entrar en la fe judía. Marcos nos
dice de una manera sencilla que Jesús vino de Nazaret y
también fue bautizado por Juan. Es en este momento
que Jesús escucha la frase "Tú eres mi Hijo amado; en ti
me complazco". En el Evangelio de Marcos, estas palabras se dirigen solamente a Jesús. A diferencia de Mateo
y Lucas, esta es una experiencia personal, y las palabras
de Dios no son escuchadas por los demás. Jesús actúa
como el Hijo Amado, y comienza su ministerio público, no
como un triunfante, poderoso Mesías sino como el Siervo
Sufriente; su trono será el amor sacrificial, no poder temporal. El bautismo de Jesús marca el comienzo de una
nueva era guiada por la acción amorosa del Espíritu.
La lectura de hoy nos presenta tres ideas importantes:
· A través del bautismo se nos da la vida con el Espíritu
Santo y Jesús crea un nuevo pueblo de Dios.
· El descenso del Espíritu sobre Jesús que significa unción para su ministerio.
· La aprobación de Jesús de parte de Dios como garantía
de que Jesús cumplirá su misión mesiánica de salvación.

P. Oración antes de las comidas?
Me he estado preguntando: ¿cuáles son los orígenes de la oración? Y, ¿tiene usted que decir simplemente que una oración, o se pueden utilizar diferentes?
R. No hay oracion de gracia en las comidas que los catolicos dicen precisamente. Uno es libre de hablar en otras palabras de bendiciones y gratitud. Sin embargo, hay un valor en el uso de la oracion memorizada y ampliamente conocida para que otros puedan unirse en la recitacion. Por
esta razon, los rituales catolicos a menudo establecen formas de oraciones
para facilitar la oracion comunitaria y para servir como modelos. Curiosamente, lo que la mayoría de los catolicos llaman "gracia diciendo" es en
realidad una oracion de bendicion: pero la palabra "gracia" viene del latín
gratia, es decir gracias o gratitud por una gracia "nosotros o Senor y estos,
tus regalos ... .. bendiga" recibida. Así, "la gracia" se refiere mas bien a la
oracion al final de la comida, que comienza generalmente, "damos gracias
Dios Todopoderoso por estos y todos sus beneficios, que vives y reinas ..."
la tradicion de decir una verdad "gracia" en el final de la comida es menos
comun entre los catolicos de hoy. La expresion "decir gracias" se refiere
en general a cualquier oracion. Esta inscrita en el Ritual Romano, pero sin
atribucion. En el Ritual Romano, la parte familiar, "nos bendiga oh Senor"
es una parte de un rito ya que la mayoría seguramente surgio en un ambiente monastico.
El Bautismo del Señor
Hoy la Iglesia celebra la solemnidad del Bautismo de Nuestro
Senor. Esto pone fin a la temporada de Navidad. La Iglesia
recuerda la segunda manifestacion o epifanía de Nuestro
Senor que se produjo con ocasion de su bautismo en el Jordan. Jesus descendio al río para santificar las aguas y darles el
poder de engendrar hijos de Dios. El evento se lleva en la
importancia de una segunda creacion en el que toda la Trinidad interviene. En la Iglesia de Oriente esta fiesta se llama Teofanía porque
en el bautismo de Cristo en el río Jordan Dios aparecido en tres personas.
El bautismo de Juan era una especie de sacramental preparatorio para el
Bautismo de Cristo. Se movio a los hombres a sentimientos de arrepentimiento y los indujo a confesar sus pecados. Cristo no necesitaba el bautismo de Juan. Aunque El aparecio en la "sustancia de nuestra carne" y fue
reconocido "exteriormente semejante a nosotros mismos", El era absolutamente sin pecado e impecable. El confirio el agua el poder del verdadero
bautismo que eliminaría todos los pecados del mundo: "He aquí el Cordero
de Dios, lo he aquí, que quita el pecado del mundo."
Muchos de los incidentes que acompanaron el bautismo de Cristo son
símbolo de lo que ocurrio en nuestro Bautismo. En el bautismo de Cristo, el
Espíritu Santo descendio sobre El; en nuestro Bautismo la Trinidad tomo
su morada en nuestra alma. En el bautismo Cristo fue proclamado el "Hijo
amado" del Padre; en nuestro bautismo nos convertimos en los hijos adoptivos de Dios. En el bautismo de Cristo se abrieron los cielos; en nuestro
Bautismo el cielo se abrio para nosotros. En su bautismo Jesus oro; despues de nuestro bautismo, debemos orar para evitar el pecado actual.
