Phil & Diane Applegate 281.361.2913 Over/(short): $ (18,829) Alejandra Gutierrez 832.860.4860 From the Pastor To the parish family of St. Martha, To understand the message of the Gospel account for the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, it may be helpful to recall a passage from the New Testament where Jesus is answering questions from a crowd that had gathered to listen to his teaching. One of the people asked the question that most of us have had at one time or another: “Master, what must I do to gain eternal life?” Behind this question is the need for us to be reassured about the “correct formula” or the “right way” to live in order to get to heaven. As we search the teachings of Jesus in the Gospels, we discover that he did not provide a list of detailed laws and strict regulations to observe. Instead Jesus gave a new kind of answer to this age-old question. He spoke of himself as being one with his Father and he frequently used the phrase “I am.” While this response may seem somewhat enigmatic, what Jesus was emphasizing was that authentic religion flowed from the heart, from one’s relationship with God. Thus, for Christians there was to be a new standard to use in judging “righteousness,” a biblical term which means a right relationship with God, with others, and with oneself. This standard was not something that could easily be codified in a set of laws and prescriptions. It was a standard that could only be lodged in the heart of the person. It originated from an action of God’s grace that flowed from the Word of God. Once welcomed into the heart, it would purify, transform, and renew people from within. Certainly there exist pride, anger, hate, lust, and any number of sinful attitudes in the interior of human beings and these are the source of evil in the world. However, no external law, religious ritual, or time-honored regulation can eliminate these from our lives. Only the transformation of the heart that comes from God’s grace can do that! Certainly Jesus did not come to do away with the Law and the Ten Commandments that were so cherished by the people of Israel. Jesus was a practicing Jew and he faithfully followed these rituals and regulations. He spoke of fulfilling the Law and the Prophets by living from within. The Commandments tell us to worship God alone, to honor parents and the goods of others, not to kill or steal or bear false witness, etc. Such Commandments are necessary for the good order of society and most of the time it is not too difficult to observe them. But Jesus went further and called for authentic “habits of the heart” that would lead us to love God above all things and our neighbor as ourselves. In a summary of this “New Law” Jesus gave us the Beatitudes and invited us to “be poor in spirit, to be meek and humble of heart, to be just and merciful, to be gentle and forgiving.” Keeping the Commandments is a necessary preparation for learning to live from the heart. While there will always exist some tension between law and grace, this is a healthy tension that should lead us to reflect on how we can internalize the values espoused by our sacred laws and rituals. It’s crucial that we heed the admonition of St. James in our second reading: let us become “doers of the word and not hearers only” and let us pray that our religion is indeed “pure and undefiled before God.” Fr. Chester Borski Out of Work, or Just Wishing for a Change? We can help! All the sorrows of Our Blessed Mother are joined together with the passion and death of her son, Jesus Christ. And so we pray: Oh my Jesus, In your passion came true the prophecy of Simeon, that your mother would be pierced by a sword of immeasurable anguish and sorrow. Grant that as we who commemorate the memory of her grief, imitate her stewardship example and participate in a profound way in your redemptive work. Help us to embrace the journey of your passion, so that like Our Blessed Mother, your first and greatest disciple, we too may be brought from death to life by your cross and resurrection. Enriquecimiento y fortalecimiento a parejas constituidas. Planificación familiar natural para parejas católicas. Disciplina positiva para padres e hijos. Formación en nuestra fe católica. Crecimiento y desarrollo espiritual. Marta.
