El último match del dia 31 de Mayo, acercó al VG en una
de las mesas a Auken-Welland por el equipo Milner jugando contra la pareja de Barcelona del equipo del mismo
nombre: Llopart y Gomez. Amadeo Llopart es el marido
de una española que ya es Campeona Sudamericana,
Maria del Carmen Babot, habrá venido Amadeo a empatarle a su esposa? Veremos… por lo que se vio en el VG
tiene con que…

Ya la primera tablilla generó un swing de 11 IMPs para
Barcelona: Welland eligió salir de chica contra los 3NT de
Gomez y tuvo la mala suerte de encontrar el J ♠ segundo
en el muerto, lo que le dio al declarante dos stoppers en
espada y el contrato. En la otra mesa Markovic salio con el
K ♠, y el declarante ya no pudo cumplir su contrato.
En la tablilla 17 del match, Barcelona volvió a sumar, esta
vez 6 IMPs, cuando cumplió un parcial de espadas, donde
se habían estirado a game con multa en la otra sala, rápido vino la replica…

En la otra mesa Welland también carteaba 3NT, con salida
10♠. Cuando Este jugó chico, el declarante ganó la primera
baza con la Q♠, y siguió con el 7♦, al K♦ que ganó la baza.
Volvió a la mano con corazon para jugar el 4♦. Oeste ganó
la baza con el J♦ y volvió el K♠.
Welland ganó con el A♠, y jugó su ultimo diamante. Gomez
ganó con el as y volvió un corazón. El declarante ganó con
el as y jugó un trebol al 10…Gomez ganó con el A, y volvió
el valet de corazon, Llopart ganó la baza con la dama pero
cualquier vuelta le daba a Welland sus 9 bazas. El equipo
Milner recuperaba 12 IMPs. Desde ahí en adelante el equipo
Milner siguió sumando, acumulando una diferencia a su favor de 29 IMPs, cuando en la ante-ultima tablilla Barcelona
encontró un slam y descontó 11 IMPs.

and continued with a heart. Hemant Lall won with his queen
and played a club for one down.
At the other table Welland also played 3NT, with a 10♠ lead.
When East played low, declarer won the trick with the Q♠, and
played the 7♦, to the K♦ winning the trick. He returned to his
hand with a heart to play the 4♦. West won with the J♦ and
returned the K♠.
Welland won with the A♠, and played his last diamond.
Gomez won with the ace and returned a heart. Declarer won
the ace and played a club to the 10… Gomez won with the
ace, and returned the valet of heart, Llopart won the trick
with the queen, but any return gave Welland his 9th trick.
Milner team recovered 12 IMPs. From then on the Milner
team continued adding, till accumulate a difference in his favor of 29 IMPs, when Barcelona found a slam in board 27 and
pulled 11 IMPs.

Después de tres pasos Gomez abrió de 1♠, y cuando escuchó la respuesta de 2♦ de su compañero, empujó a su
partner hasta el slam.

Declarer won the trick with the A♥, continued with the K♦,
where Welland played the Q♦. The third trick was won with
the J♦. Gomez continued with a club to the queen, Auken played her king, to return the 3♠…
El declarante gano la baza con el A♥, siguió con el K♦, donde Welland jugó su Q♦. El J♦ fue la tercera baza. Gomez
continuo con un trebol a la dama, Auken ganó con su rey
para volver el 3♠…
Gomez puso el as, cobró el as de trebol, saco el ultimo
triunfo, y corrió sus tres triunfos restantes, descartando
todas las espadas del muerto, finalizo la faena con un corazon al diez y se tendió.
En la otra mesa también hicieron 12 bazas…pero solo habían contratado 5 diamantes…

Entre los jugadores de bridge que
han hecho grande a este deporte, se
podria decir que hoy el numero 1 es
Benito Garozzo, un pionero en todo lo
que ha hecho a la evolucion y el crecimiento del bridge y que aun hoy, despues de mas de 60 años ininterrumpidos de ser una estrella mundial de
bridge, no solo participa de muchos
de los eventos mas importantes que
se realizan alrededor del mundo,
tambien es comun encontrarlo jugando en BBO, donde los que recien
comienzan a jugar pueden tener la
oportunidad de verlo y aprender de
las maravillas que hace con las cartas.
La CSBnews.org, se siente orgullosa
de haber podido tener la oportunidad de que el Gran Maestro Italiano
nos contara algo mas de su vida y de
su pasion por el bridge y queremos
agradecerle de corazon que gracias a
su amabilidad de siempre podamos

ɐɐ Segun Wikipedia naciste en
Alexandria (Egipto); cosa que
muy pocas personas saben. ¿Es
esto así?
Los datos de Wikipedia estan equivocados. Mi familia solia vivir en el
Cairo, y mi padre enviaba a pasar el
verano a Napoles a mi madre, a mis
cuatro hermanas y a mi otro hermano. Yo nací el 5 de Septiembre de 1927
en nuestra casa de Napoles.
ɐɐ ¿Cuando y Cómo empezaste a
jugar al bridge?
Mi hermano que era 16 años mayor
que yo me enseño a jugar “Tresette”
cuando tenia solo 6 años. Tresette es
un juego de cartas que tiene cierta similitud con el juego de la defensa en
sin triunfo y el juego con el muerto en
el bridge. Mi hermano tambien me enseñó a jugar ajedrez, un juego donde
antes de hacer un movimiento se necesita tener un plan ya ideado.
La misma prioridad que en el Bridge,
siendo declarante no se debe jugar
la primera carta sin tener un plan

de como se va a cumplir el contrato
prometido, de otra manera quizas
se le deba entregar el contrato a la
defensa.
La practica de estos dos juegos me
ayudaron a convertirme en un buen
jugador de bridge.
En 1943 durante la segunda Guerra
Mundial nos reuniamos en mi casa de
Napoles a jugar a las cartas con mis
hermanas, uno de mis cuñados y algunos otros amigos.
Jugabamos algunos juegos italianos
como “Tresette” o “Scopone”, un dia
uno del grupo propuso que aprendieramos a jugar al bridge y trajo un libro de Culbertson y asi aprendimos a
jugar siguiendo las reglas del libro.
En 1946 en El Cairo comence a conocer con mas profundidad el bridge,
mejoré mi juego leyendo libros sobre
el bridge mas recientes y jugando en
el “Auto-Bridge”.
En 1950 volví a Napoles a visitar a mi
familia y por primera vez tome parte,
con cuatro amigos; del Campeonato
Italiano de Bridge, mi compañero fue
Mario Montuori y en la otra mesa estaba Massimo D’Alelio.
En la clasificacion para las semifinales nosotros derrotamos a un equipo
que incluía a: Pietro Forquet, Eugenio
Chiaradia, Gugliemo Siniscalco, todos jugadores ya consagrados en ese
momento.
Mario Montuori, un muy buen jugador, fue mi primer compañero hasta
que fui invitado a formar parte del
“Blue Team” en 1961 remplazando a
Guglielmo Siniscalco que era el compañero de Forquet.
ɐɐ ¿Como fue eso?
Era 1961 y recibi la invitacion 10 dias
antes que empezara el torneo (la Bermuda Bowl en Argentina), fui invitado
por Pietro Forquet, él ya era considerado uno de los mejores jugadores del
mundo.
Como te puedes imaginar para mi fue
un gran honor, el tema fue que tuve
que aprender el sistema del “Trébol
Napolitano” y eso para mi fue un
gran problema. Yo sabia algo sobre
ese sistema, pero nunca antes habia
jugado un sistema artificial!.
Pietro y Eugenio Chiaradia me ayudaron con el sistema, todos los dias
subastabamos manos con el mazo
corto (sin el 2,3,4, y 5 de cada palo) y
Eugenio se sentaba detras mio, cuando yo tenia problemas con la declaracion Eugenio me ayudaba a resolverlos, sus consejos fueron de una gran
ayuda para mi. El resultado fue muy
bueno, al finalizar el entrenameinto
yo estuve listo para enfrentar el reto y
convertirme en Campeon del Mundo.
Considero que tanto Pietro como Eugenio fueron mis mentores no solo en
lo referente al sistema, sino tambien
a como jugar un evento de equipos de
alta competencia.
ɐɐ ¿Quienes fueron tus distintos
compañeros en el Blue Team?
Mis compañeros en la nacional italiana fueron:
1. Pietro Forquet
2. Giorgio Belladonna
3. Arturo Franco
4. Lorenzo Lauria
5. Dano De Falco.
Tambien jugué algunos matches con;
Eugenio Chiaradia y Vito Pittala. Todos ellos fueron grandes compañeros,
cualquiera puede leer sus logros en la
Enciclopedia del Bridge.
ɐɐ Seguramente todos ustedes tenian un caracter fuerte, ¿Cómo
manejaban sus temperamentos
en funcion del equipo?
Con Forquet y Belladonna no recuerdo haber tenido problemas. Con los
otros tres fue distinto y tuvimos nuestras diferencias, debo destacar que
ellos son 20 años menores que Yo.
ɐɐ ¿Cual piensa usted que fue la
razón por la cual Italia mantuvo
la supremacia por tantos años?
Nosotros teniamos un mejor sistema
de subasta y teniamos parejas muy
estables conformadas por grandes
jugadores.
No habia muchos buenos equipos, la
mayoría de ellos provenían de un torneo de seleccion y algunas veces algunas parejas que clasificaban no eran

las mejores.
ɐɐ Italia tuvo al famoso Carlos
Alberto Perroux como capitan
no jugador, ¿Qué nos puede
decir acerca de esta leyenda?
El era el Presidente y el Capitán y
siempre hizo lo mejor para ganar.
El nunca permitió que se jugara un
torneo de selección para nominar el
equipo.
ɐɐ Integraste el Lancia Circus
Team, ¿Que recuerdos de esa
epoca quieres compartir con
nosotros?
Recuerdo que Lancia nos ofrecia comprar un auto distinto por año a un
precio muy ventajoso, yo compre una
coupé que me encanto tener.
ɐɐ ¿Cuáles son las virtudes que
deberia tener un compañero
ideal? ¿Tu te consideras un
buen compañero? ¿Quien es tu
compañero ideal?
Nunca discutir en la mesa, creer
que tu compañero es mejor que tu y
siempre tener confianza en lo que el
hace tanto en la subasta como en la
defensa.
Belladonna y Forquet tenian las condiciones de las que hago mencion. Yo
soy un buen compañero aunque a veces discuto en la mesa.
ɐɐ ¿Hay alguna mano que cuando
la recuerdas te quita el sueño?
Muchas manos que perdí por jugar
mal, algunas de cuando era muy
joven.
ɐɐ ¿Cuales fueron tus momentos
mas felices y los mas infeciles
en tu carrera bridgistica?
Todas las veces que gane y perdí el
campeonato mundial. Tambien haber
ganado el “Par Contest” es un lindo
recuerdo.
ɐɐ ¿Cuál fue el campeonato mas
divertido en el que participaste?
Naturalmente ese fue mi primer torneo, fue extremadamente excitante
para mi.
ɐɐ ¿Qué te motiva a seguir jugan-

do despues de tantos años y de
haber ganado todo?
El Bridge es el gran juego, lo ame
cuando lo conoci y lo amaré hasta el
ultimo dia de mi vida.
ɐɐ ¿Que piensa del bridge online,
es el mismo bridge?
Creo que el bridge online y particularmente BBO (Bridge Base Online)
ha ayudado a mejorar a muchas parejas, ellas puedes jugar y entrenar
ahi, incluso si los jugadores viven en
diferentes ciudades o paises.
El legendario jugador estrella
Italiano/Americano Benito Garozzo
en un torneo de bridge junto a la ya
desaparecida Lea Dupont en el año
1980. En el video tambien esta Sam
Stayman (el jugador que popularizó
la pregunta de un mayor: 1NT-2 ).
ɐɐ ¿Cómo ve el desarrollo de los
sistemas de bridge en el siglo
XXI?
Los sistemas de bridge son muy importantes. He creado muchos sistemas y muchas convenciónes, ahora es
más importante tener un sistema más
preciso en la subasta de competencia ya que los oponentes entran en la
licitación con mucha más frecuencia
que en el pasado.
ɐɐ ¿Qué consejo le darias a un
joven que pretende convertirse
en profesional de bridge?
No creer que lo sabe todo, siempre se
pueden encontrar algunas cosas de

BENITO GAROZZO

Among the bridge players that have
made BIG this sport, you could say
that today the number one is Benito
Garozzo, a pioneer in the evolution
and growth of bridge and that even
today, after more than 60 years of being a bridge star, he continues playing
in many of the most important events
around the world, and it is also easy
to find him playing on BBO, where
those who have just started to play
may have the opportunity to see and
learn about the wonders he makes
with the cards.

interview this Grand Italian Master,
and hear more about his life and his
passion for bridge. Benito…we will be

ɐɐ You were born in Alexandria,
Egypt (source Wikipedia) something which very few know.
What are your memories of
your early life there?
Wikipedia made a mistake my family
use to live in Cairo Egypt and every
summer my father use to send my mother, my 4 sisters and my brother to
Naples Italy, the 5 September of 1927,
I was born in our home in Naples,
and from my brother 16 years older
than me, when I was 6 years old, I
learn to play tresette (an italian card
play with some similarity in the dummy play and defense to the No trump
in Bridge).
My brother taught me also to play
chess, a game in which before to make
a move you must have plan at least
your next 4 moves. This is a priority
also in bridge, not to play the first
card without planning how to win
your contract or going the less down.
Those 2 games helped me to become a
good bridge player.
ɐɐ When, why and how did you
start playing bridge and who
were your first partners?
I start to play in 1943 in Naples were
I was during WW 2 at my sister’s
home. With my brother in law and
some friends and relatives we were

playing italian games like “Tresette”
or “Scopone”, two partnership games.
One day one of the group propose to
learn and play bridge and he brought
a book from Culbertson and we learn
to play following his rules.
In 1946 I went back to The Cairo and
met better bridge payers and I improved my game reading more recent
books and playing the dummy on
Auto Bridge.

In 1950 I went to Naples to visit my
family and for the first time I played
with 4 friends in the italian team bridge championship, my partner was
Mario Montuori and in the team was
Massimo D’Alelio.
In the qualification for the semifinal
we beat the team including Pietro
Forquet, Eugenio Chiaradia, Gugliemo Siniscalco. Mario Montuori a very
good Bridge Player was my first partner until I was invited to join the Blue
Team in 1961 to replace Guglielmo
Siniscalco, partnering Pietro Forquet.
ɐɐ You were invited to join the
Blue Team for the first time in
1961. 10 days before the event!
What can you tell us about
this?
In 1961 10 days before the championship started, I was invited to play with
Pietro Forquet, considered one of the
best players of the world, for me was
a big honor, but there was a problem,
I had to learn the Neapolitan Club
System, for me that was a big problem
because I never have played an artificial system before.
Forquet and Chiaradia every day
made me bid hands, we were using a
short deck of cards taking out 2,3,4,5
and dealing the cards to me and Pietro, when I was in trouble, Chiaradia
was helping me.
The results were good, I was ready to
go, and we became World Champions.
I consider Pietro Forquet and Eugenio
Chiaradia as my teachers, not only for
the bridge system but for how to play
in high level team games.
ɐɐ Can you tell us who were your
partners and a brief definition
of each member?
My partner in the Blue Team were:
1. Pietro Forquet
2. Giorgio Belladonna
3. Arturo Franco
4. Lorenzo Lauria
5. Dano De Falco.
I also played some hands with Eugenio Chiaradia and Vito Pittala. All my
partners were very good and they are
listed in the Bridge Encyclopedia
e) Surely both you and the Blue Team
players had strong characters, how
did you manage your temperaments?
With Forquet and Belladonna I do not
remember having problems. With the
other 3 we had some discussions, they
were over 20+ years younger than me.
ɐɐ What do you think were the
reasons for the Italy supremacy
for so many years?
We were playing a better bidding system and we were steady partners and
all good players, there were not many
good teams and almost all of them
doing trials by pairs, and sometimes
not qualifying the best partnerships.
ɐɐ Italy had the famous Carlos
Alberto Perroux as NPC. What
can you tell us about this bridge legend?
He was the President and the captain
and he always did the best for winning. He did not allowed the trials.
ɐɐ You were part of the “Circus
Lancia Team” Do you have any
memories of this period that
you want to share with us?
I remember Lancia gave us a different
car each year and we could buy it at
a very good price, I bought a Lancia
coupe and I loved it.
ɐɐ What are the virtues that
should have the ideal partner?
Do you consider yourself a good
partner or not? Why? Who was
your favorite partner? Why?
Not argue at the table, you must think
that he is better than you, trust in the
bidding and in defense. Belladonna
and Forquet had every quality I mention. I am a good partner but sometimes I argue at the table.
ɐɐ Is there a hand that makes you
stay awake when you remember it?
All the hands I misplayed, some of
them when I was younger.
ɐɐ What were your bridge career
happiest and saddest moments?
Each time I lost and win World
Championship. And winning the PAR

CONTEST.
ɐɐ What was the most fun of all
Championship you played?
Why?
Naturally the first, It was very exciting for me.
ɐɐ What motivates you to keep
playing even after winning it
all?
Bridge is the Greatest game, I loved
when I started and I will love it until
my last day.
ɐɐ What about the bridge online?
Is the same Bridge?
I believe that Bridge Online particularly BBO has helped the improvement of many pairs, since you can
play and train even if you leave in two
different towns.

ɐɐ How do you envision the development of bridge systems in
the XXI century?
The Bridge systems are very important, I have created many systems
and many conventions, now it is more
important to create a system more
precise in competition since the opponents come in the bidding more often.
ɐɐ What advice would you give to
a young player who wants to
become professional?
Do not think you know everything
you will always find something you
can learn.
ɐɐ Finally, do you want to add
something more?
There is no bridge player capable to
play without mistakes, wins more the
one doing less.
