Francis Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 13, 2009 FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK Dear Friends in Christ, As we begin a new Pastoral Year in the life of our parish I want to begin by reminding everyone of the importance of the religious formation of our children. This year we have 240 students registered in St. Mary Star of the Sea School. Scholarship money is still available for Catholic families, particularly for children in grades 2 and 8. If you would like to obtain more information about our Catholic School please contact Ms. Brucia at (718) 327-2242 as soon as possible. Our parish Religious Education Program will begin on the last Saturday of this month. Please register your children if you have not already done so! It is also so important for each one of us to spread the message about our school and religious education program to our friends, neighbors, classmates, etc. There are thousands of Catholics who live in our neighborhood who do not attend Mass at either church week after week. The only way they can know about what is happening here is if we spread the word! Any parent who would like to hand out information outside of any of the public schools can let me know. We are very happy to provide the information that will help us spread the Good News. Volunteers are always needed and always welcome! Our parish Rosary Convocation began last Tuesday with the Mass on the Beach. Deacon Mike will continue the Convocation each Tuesday during the month of September at 7:00 P.M. in the church. All are welcome to join us as we pray the rosary in English, Spanish and French. I am grateful to Deacon Mike and the members of the English speaking Prayer Group for their help in planning this special Rosary Convocation during the month of September. Over the last few months Deacon Tony has been working with a group of dedicated parishioners who now make up what is called the St. Paul the Apostle Evangelization Committee. The goal of the committee is to reach out to those who do not come to church and to make them feel part of this parish family. Who do you know that needs to be welcomed? What friends, neighbors or family members do you have who do not come to church or practice their faith? As we begin a new parish year it is my goal that this year be about true evangelization! All those who would like to help in reaching out to others should leave their name and phone number for me at (718) 327-1133 Ext. 22. The Lord is calling us to seek the lost and welcome the stranger. When we work together great things can happen. I would love your help on this special mission. Please consider joining me! There were cheers and applause last Sunday when I announced that our old friend Father Tony Hernandez was named as a Chaplain to His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI with the title of Reverend Monsignor. Msgr. Tony spent his first five years of priesthood here in our parish and continues to keep in 3 touch with many friends and parishioners. Our parish celebrates this great honor. I have written to Msgr. Tony to invite him to come home to Far Rockaway and celebrate with us. I will let you know of a date for the celebration once it is set. In the meantime I have his address listed below for all those who would like to extend their congratulations to him: Reverend Monsignor Anthony M. Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Adopt-a-Priest corner Our celebration of the “Year of the Priest” is ongoing. If you have not yet adopted a priest, please find it in your heart to do so as soon as possible. Over 700 letters were sent out to the priests and seminarians of the Diocese of Brooklyn to let them know that our parishioners are adopting priests for the year. Several priests have responded with their appreciation by email, letter and telephone calls. They are overwhelmed by our kindness and they greatly appreciate what we are doing for them. Here are excerpts from some of the letters that have been received thus far: “With sincere thanks for a spiritually generous program of support in the Year of the Priest.” Msgr Thomas Caserta “I cannot tell you how much it means to me that you are praying for me in a special way.” Father Arthur Minichello “Thank you for your prayers.” Msgr. Edward Wetterer “What a wonderful idea! I am most greatful to have received notice of my “adoption” by one of the members of your parish & especially of the promise of prayers that goes with it. What better gift could I have been given! I appreciate your support and encouragement. God bless! Msgr. Tosi “Thank you very much for your prayers. Msgr. Basler VOCATIONS Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time “Who do you say that I am?” The One who calls is the Messiah, the Son of the living God. Will you follow Him as a priest, deacon, brother or sister? Talk to your pastor or contact the Vocation Office at 718-827-2454 or [email protected]. COME AND JOIN US... People with and without disabilities are invited to attend the Third Annual Father Brendan Downing Dissability Awareness Mass on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 5:00 P.M. at St. Gertrude Church, Beach 38 Street and Beach Channel Drive, Far Rockaway. *St. Gertrude Church is fully accessible* September 13, 2009 4 My Spiritually Adopted Priest I’ve contacted my adopted priest. I will be sharing a family photo with him and will be calling him as well. Beverly Johnson Godette. I’ve been writing to my spiritually adopted priest. The first time I wrote him, I sent him a holy card together with my letter. This month, I intend to send a NY Times clipping about a study done by the CARA on priests. I shared with him what our parish is doing on this Year of the Priest. I also explained how I end up picking his name. I thanked him for being a priest. I also let him know that I’ve been praying for him and lifting up his intentions during my daily recitations of the rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet . I also remember him at Mass and during Eucharistic Adorations at St Rose Parish where I usually visit. I also include in my prayers all priests and seminarians of the Diocese with each one mentioned by name. This way, not one priest in our Diocese is not prayed for. I’ll encourage a friend of mine to also do the same. “My priest” has not responded yet. But that is all right. The intention is to pray for priests whether they respond or not. I’ll continue to pray for him. Besides, no prayer is wasted. E. P. Note: Those who would like to share their experience with their adopted priest with the parish through the Bulletin , we’d like to hear from you. Please contact anyone from the vocations committee.
