St. Brendan the Navigator
The Navigator El Navegante We welcome all to join us in being like Jesus Christ to our world. The Epiphany of the Lord January 6, 2013 Important Announcement A Call to Action from the American Bishops In this Year of Faith, the Catholic Bishops of the United States have called for a nationwide effort to advance a Movement for Life, Marriage, and Religious Liberty through prayer, penance, and sacrifice. Catholics across the nation are being encouraged to pray for rebuilding a culture favorable to life and marriage and for increased protections of religious liberty. (Go online to http://usccb.org/beliefs-and-teachings/how-we-teach/newevangelization/year-of-faith/life-marriage-liberty.cfm.) The well being of society requires that life, marriage, and religious liberty are promoted and protected. Serious threats to each of these goods, however, have raised unprecedented challenges to the Church and to the nation. Two immediate flashpoints demand our attention: First, the new U.S. Health and Human Services mandate requires almost all employers, including Catholic employers, to pay for employees’ contraception, sterilization, and abortifacient drugs regardless of conscientious objections. This is a clear affront to America's first freedom, religious liberty, and to the inherent dignity of every human person. "And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel." - Mt 2:6 Second, current trends in both government and culture are moving toward redefining marriage as the union of any two persons. Such trends ignore marriage’s fundamental meaning and purpose as the universal institution that unites a man and a woman with each other and with the children born from their union. The goal of this call to prayer is twofold: to increase awareness of these challenges and to build spiritual stamina and fortitude among the faithful so that we can be effective and joyful witnesses of faith, hope, and charity as agents of the New Evangelization. Please continue reading inside for the five important components that the Bishops are asking of us all in their Call to Prayer for Life, Marriage and Religious Liberty. A daily Rosary prayed by families and individuals. Special Prayers of the Faithful at all Masses. Fasting and abstinence from meat on all Fridays until the end of the Year of Faith on November 24, 2013. Offer the fasting and abstinence for the intention of the protection of life, marriage, and religious liberty. (The general practice of fasting allows a person to eat one full meal for the day. Two smaller meals may also be taken, which together should be less than the equivalent of one full meal. Abstinence means refraining from meat and meat products.) Another Fortnight for Freedom observance in June/July 2013. This observance will serve as a visible, vibrant reminder of the God-given nature of religious liberty, the right to bring our faith into the public square, and the rights of individuals and institutions to conduct their professional lives according to their religious convictions.
