In the Tropical area of the planes (eastern part of Bolivia) the average temperature is 30 degrees Celcius. The rain season starts in December and stops in March. HEALTH The sickness which affects more often to travellers is the highness sickness. For the first 24 hours avoid long walks and do not carry heavy things. Another frequent sickness is diarrhoea. Drink only boiled or bottled water. Avoid the consumption of water directly from the tap. Eating out in markets is not a problem for the visitor. SATETYNESS All Bolivian cities are extremely welcoming and quite, but you can always find pick pockets like in any other place of the world. It shall be very useful to carry a photocopy of the passport and be careful with personal belongings. That’s all. 10_11 DESTINOS | DESTINATIONS | www.boliviaway.com I feel lucky to live within the Pyrenees that is the mountain range i have travelled many times and it has made me to look forward to visiting other mountains. I did not know much about Bolivia, mainly what I was going to find out there, even though my initial intention was to trek the mountains, but not summits over 6.000 meter above sea level. I had no clue what I could reach once there although I have references from a friend who was there before me. Physically and physiologically, I felt very well. One of the main obstacles when trekking or climbing mountains is how many people you might find. The routes are now like attraction parks and it is complicated to be on your own or alone with only your group of friends. In Bolivia, due to lack of infrastructure that´s just possible, even though you may take extra security measures. It is not compulsory to travel with a guide but advisable. The quantity of travel agencies in La Paz and the possibilities are countless. You have to know in advance where you want to climb and with who, you must trust the person you will be knotted to and you may also need time to get used to highness, those factors may interfere your desire to get to the summit. I got a guide to who I could organize the trip personally, each expedition though it was a bit more expensive. Apart from logistics and organization, the Bolivian Andean Mountain captivated me. I only went to the Royal Mountain Range, but other trails are possible. If you yearn to climb to 6.000 meters above sea level you must be well adapted to 4.500 meters above sea level. Sorata, at the planes of Illampu, is located at approximately 2.600 meters above sea level, so I decided to trek for four days to get adapted, climbing to the base camp of the Jankho Uma at 5.000 meters above sea level. foto: liZet One week later, with my friend Baraka and our guide Jose, we tried to climb to Jankho Uma – 6.429 meters above sea level-. We were exhausted already at 6.000, but at dawn in the glacier of the Jankho Uma, the redness of the ice and the Titikaka lake as the landscape was priceless. The Illimani is certainly special. It is a mountain, which seems to be calling you at all times due to its visual situation from La Paz. It seems to be just there like if you could touch it. But the journey to get there is long and the roads are not asphalted. From Pinaya at a two hours journey, you can reach the base camp – Puente Roto. Now with some more experience, I knew I needed much more adaptation to highness. After some resting, I decided to trail from the mountain range that goes from Sorata to the Huayna Potosi for 10 to 12 days. The trails are very hard too, from 6 to 8 hours, trekking to 4.000 meters above sea level and over passing the 5.000 like in Negruni. You may find on your way to Palca town the Chearoko snowed summits as the landscape, glacial valleys with green planes and streams of pure water crystal clear. The next day, we climbed to the plane of the glacier at a 5.500 meters above sea level. The difficulties increase but the views are much better. At night, La Paz shines in the horizon. In the morning the cold hurts you, we went trekking at four in the morning and in four hours we were at the summit. We got it. I found on the way small town inhabited by shepherds and children who make you realize how hard are these lands. Very few tourists. Further through the Wila Lluxita trail, the pathway crosses the slopes of the High Plateau. Almost deserted, freezing cold and constant winds. Few miners, some shepherds. From the Juri Kkota Or Chiar Khota, the views of the Condorini summit are outstanding (Condorini means hawk head in Aymara). Bolivia has got many chances unspoiled for trekking. My adventure through the Bolivia Royal Mountain Range tells me that adaptation to highness and the company are main aspects to enjoy the trip in better conditions, but do not forget your state of mind and the physical aspect, keys to high summits. Como llegar al P.N.Sajama desde La Paz: 12_13 DESTINOS | DESTINATIONS | www.boliviaway.com The entry fee to the National Park is 30 Bolivians. Besides the snowed summit of Sajama, we can enjoy within the National Park a small and charming town, fauna (vicuñas, Andean Suri, Pumas, Llamas, Hawks, Seagulls and Flamingos among others), flora particularly the strange Queñua and rest in its thermal hot spring waters. From the Bus Terminal, you take any vehicle bound to Patacamaya (same as the one that goes to Oruro). It´s necessary to get before 10 in the morning to be able to take a sit on the bus which gets to National Park of Sajama. It gets full easily. The return trip to Patacamaya is at 6 in the morning. His literary passion was huge and genuine at the same time. Besides the above, he made himself which allowed him to have contact with the spirit of his people. Searching on his own for knowledge, he travelled all along his country, observing accurately the different cultural subjects about which he wrote later in his literary works. At the same time, it seems peculiar that in contrast to any other famous writers who are part of crowded banquet and party rooms, this extraordinary writer vision the world totally neglecting the literary marketing weapons, up to the point he himself sold his own books and other authors´ at his own shop. “The writer is a worker who should be a regular member of society and not a privileged who has been granted to be on a mud altar.” He came from a family in which the art and literary was a daily task. Paredes Candia launched different book local fairs that when young was a puppeteer and later on managed the association of book sellers and founded the editorial company Isla and the association of Bolivian society. “The writer should be before any other the one who transmits his thoughts and leads the society in some way. It´s not then strange that he was a huge defender of the folk music and everything concerned to those matters.” He has more than 112 works published which deal with tradition, folk music and the oral literary works of Bolivia. We can highlight between his main works: “Cuentos Populares Bolivianos” (Bolivian Popular Tales), “El Apodo en Bolivia” (Nicknames in Bolivia), “Brujerías” (Witchcrafts), “Tradiciones y Leyendas” (Traditions and Legends), “Las Mejores Tradiciones y Leyendas de Bolivia” (Bolivia´s best Traditions and Legends), “Folklore the Potosí” (Potosi´s Folk music) and “Diccionario Mitológico Boliviano” (Bolivian Mythology Dictionary). Last but not least, it´s the famous “De rameras, burdeles y proxenetas” (About prostitutes, brothels and pimps) which far from any innocent idea and the attitude of society to those matters due to its two sided moral. This work is significantly the most relevant of all of them since disseminate society with a surgeon hand. This stunning work provides us too a list of popular names with which he calls the pimps and the prostitutes in different regions of Bolivia as curiosity for the reader which it seems to be useful as well. “There is no reason to be scared or to put a silly face whilst reading this petit book which presumably, could be read by people in 2050. Before, it could not be published due to the Bolivian way of thinking since it was far too popular, prejudiced and with all the limitations which are remarked to a province human soul.” His spirit was notoriously embraced by old moral vicious which shows his remarkable revelry and together with some sense of inconformism and intellect mood. This way, Paredes Candia, through heavy subtle words, opens our eyes to human faces too human to be true within his works, all of them granted by some innocent aspect and plenty of deep life strength. Let´s examine the case of Mrs. Ana Ramirez who was administrator of one of the most visited brothels in Bolivia at the beginning of the XX century and where Mr. Antonio let us see the universe of his flesh and bone characters totally uncovered: “She was a gorgeous Chilean whose body was well formed even when she was in her fifties. She had the habit after having some drinks, getting completely naked and walk along the room sitting on every men´s lap who she thought was nice and asking for getting tickled her clitoris. She was the most high class pimp of her time and her brothel was the best in town. She died in an aircraft crash accident when she was coming back from Chile taking with her new young employees for her household”. They return Sundays and Wednesdays. You will pass across several towns, going around the North of Titikaka Lake, arid landscapes of the High Plateau full of outstanding mountains – the Illimani, the Huayna Potosí, the Illampu, the Mururata, the Condorini amid many others. From Aucapata, well provided with goods and loads of water, the trekking is smooth, a sleathering road up to the signaled desviation. You have to downhill more than 1.000 meters up to 1.672 meters above sea level (4 to 5 hours). You can realize from far away the importance of this place. Iskanwaya is divided into different very deteriorated towns, but the extention is stunning. The geographical situation is priviledged, it is located near a river which apparently seems to be less large than it is in reality and the imagination makes the rest. You will arrive to Achacachi, the biggest small town in the area, which is the best place to get goods before the trail. Then, your trip will continue through the banks of the Suches River, the biggest tributary of the Sacred Lagoon, passing Ancoraimes, Carabuco and Escoma 154 Kms. away where the road is divided into two, one goes to the North of the country and the other goes to Charazani-Apolo. This urban compound of Iskanwaya was built on a vertical plain, it´s a construction of buildings conected by small streets and fend by a web of water canals made with rock and slate. The control of water allowed them to own the best terraces for plantation. Even today you can see small banana and avocado plantations. This route crosses different towns and high mountain ranges like Koanzani and Kellinzani at approximately 5.000 meters above sea level up to Huanco. The bus will also cross Yanawaya, from where the bus will downhill a vertical pathway, where you will border an abysm and the clouds will be at your feet. After 12 hours trip, you are in Aucapata 325 kms away from La Paz. Impressive. The slate that together with the mud and the rocks – used as a mixer – form a huge city. It is very limited preserved, but you can sightsee its squared structure which has been copied repeatedly throughout the hills. The linked buildings were shared by families which demonstrates the communal relationship between them. There is always a big patio in the middle, small houses linked, with housing structures at a higher level to the ground (it can be due to the existence of the cascabel snake in this region), with an open vestibule and an indoor room. At the left side of the Llica River, Aucapata is the living proof that the Mollo Culture existed, its very few inhabitants show the reality of this race so far away from the big cities. The kind and fun to be with children search the eye contact with foreigners. The adults keep the reminiscences of the facial race of their heritage. Small and strong. Amid its deserted streets, colonial style houses, built with slate stones, with doors and balconies carved. You can see niches where in principle they kept the food and the most apreciated objects besides the stones they grind the corn with. Whilst you walk the towns, you can discover lefts of tyles. The climate is a bit warmer and at night it is chilled. It is important to bring mosquito repellent and be aware where you sit, the alacrans hide under the slate stones. Once in the little village, there is as well an ethnographic and folklore museum which is right at the main square, you could also walk to the terrace and the ruins of an old Spanish compound, Maukallaita. Much higher at the top, the ruins of Pukara from where you can sightsee a unique view of the currents of the Locomayu River and the Llica River. You can see the small towns which are distributed throughout the plains. pu Oro Illam O a aP jet Co a mp Gr Rio Challana co Llo o a n lla a Ch aw Am i lan ni Is co Llo J S ME llu Ke CA HA AC I CH i an a Ch ma co a ch a c llu u Ch ni Jahuira i an uz Ch Rio Kaka AR I NA J. Después de casi 12 horas de viaje estamos en Aucapata 325 km. Impresionante. We discover an experience of flavours and fantasies when we travel throughout the gastronomy of the Quinoa. It has been nourishment of Gods, of its benefits and contributions has been witness by the wisdom of the farmer. 24_25 COCINA | COOKING | www.boliviaway.com Q uinoa was called Chisaya Mama in the days of the Inca Empire which meant the mother of all grains and it was part of their daily dishes. Their Gods chose it for sacred rituals where on top of that it was offered to the harvest of the first seeds as golden weapons. This devotion leaded them to deposit at the tombs grains in order to venerate their ancestors, although there are no proof people ate them. The receipt for cooking quinoa is simple: First wash it, boil it in two sizes of water for 15 minutes, the time in which the soup has been absorbed by the seed will increase three times its size. After resting the dish it will be ready for its consumption. The Spanish conquerors did not trust the strange product used for divine ceremonies and substituted it by harvest of wheat, barley, potatoes or tomatoes, which made the consumption and knowledge of the Quinoa was kept for the Indian environment only. Whilst boiling the soup, it takes a very nice visual aspect. The germ which covers the grain unrolls and forms some sort of tail in spiral. Then, the grain gets soft and the tail becomes crusty creating a very interesting combination of textures when in the mouth. Its flavour possesses slight tastes as walnuts, it has smooth and light consistency making necessary to accompany it with any other products providing balance and harmony. The harvest of Quinoa is more than 3000 years old. The Andean Mountain Range to the South and the proximities of Titikaka Lake are places in which the production is bigger and better. It grows where few vegetables species can survive. The “panojas”, name which receives the flowers of Quinoa, change colours according to the maturing times, which seems spectacular (yellows, golden, reds, violet, greens…) how the Andean Mountain Range gets coloured like waves blew by the wind. The possibilities in which it can be cooked are immense. Our friend, the Bolivian Cook Edwin Soria discover us the book “Thousand delicacies made with Quinoa by Bethzabe Iñiguez de Barrios”, where she tells the rich variety in which it can be used: from breads to refreshments, in soups, salads, pies, tortillas or tamales in a thousand of possibilities that continues in sweets like cakes, cookies, marmalades, etc. what indicates the wide versatility of this product. The Quinoa plant is not really a cereal it belongs to the spinach & beet family. There are around 120 varieties, but three of them are the most commonly harvested which can be easily recognised by its seed: one is of a pallid colour known as white or sweet variety, the dark red fruity flavoured called red quinoa and the black quinoa which is bitterer. It allows same use and it is cooked as rice or couscous. To increase its flavour, it is recommended to bake it slightly in a pan or in an oven before. Once we cooked with it and we were very successful preparing a fish and vegetable risotto. We have use it to stuff aubergines which could have also been zucchini, peppers or tomatoes, grilled in the oven mixed with béchamel sauce or Provencal like with breadcrumbs, garlic and parsley. It looked outstanding, added to a vegetable cream in which we dissolved a smoked cheese caress. We travel worldwide and created a fabulous quinoa sushi. The seed is oval & small. It is covered by a bitter layer called “saponinas” which although is taken away at the time of selling the product on top of that it needs to be accurately cleaned for its consumption and erase the bitter flavour. The quinoa attributes comply totally with our nutrition needs. It has fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and a good balance of essential amino acids which make its protein the most appropriate bearing in mind it’s a vegetable. Several assessments state the quinoa as one of the most complete food for humanity, as an example, NASA uses it for the diet in the astronauts’ flights. A golden grain which gathers tradition and modernity. Through history, it has attached Gods to humans and has been a link for farmers with mother Earth, La Pachamama. In cooking, it spreads a set of flavours with incredible textures providing three valuable rules in our daily routine: easy, fast and very nutritive. Ricardo Callejo. Cocinero - Periodista Madrid /London. Although the wild animal life is difficult to find here, we recommend getting a tour guide, it is not an ordinary park, you are here in the middle of big nature, impressive!! Tour to the Pampas: If we are seeking for wildlife within their own environment, there is nothing better than the Pampas. Throughout its small Yacuma River, we can find all types of animals. Among others, caimans, turtles, anacondas, monkeys, ant bears, capibaras, toucans, piranhas, parrots, the astonishing dolphins and luckily you will be able to see jaguars. Be aware, this is not a zoo. You have to be very careful. You can ride a horse and trail, always to enjoy live wildlife. It is the capital of the department of Pando, North of Bolivia. It is a department which geographical structure is mostly by waved planes, wide forests and huge streamed rivers due to heavy rain all year around. The climate is warm tropical. Its economy is based in the harvest of chestnuts and latex. You cannot miss whilst in Cobija the chance to visit one of the factories in which they produce the gum. In its unexplored territory, you can find different ethnic groups that live apart from the city. The populations of Pacaguras, Chamas or Toronomas are expert hunters and fishermen. The yucca, the corn and the plantain are part of their daily foods. They are very good too in handicrafts made of wood and bark. Cobija is different to other populations located within the rain forest. The streets are very steep and they are naturally used as gutters. When the sun falls down, the late afternoons are stunning, different each day. Its original architecture is found in emblematic buildings as “Prefectura”, Town Hall, Post Office or the Justice Palace. Inherited from the old continent, we may find marble houses, Venetian mirrors or English furniture. In the surroundings of Cobija, we can find the Inca remains in Las Piedras, in San Vicente and within the waters of the Acre River, we may find as well an animal fossil cemetery, we can also fish within the lakes of the Tahunanu River or go hunting to Monte Alto. Two hours away downstream the Abuna River is the gorgeous place of Cachuelas. All can be contemplated in an exotic environment full of flora and fauna. It is sometimes complicated to reach these lands, but the reward is worthwhile. The direct contact with the Amazonian Rain Forest of Pando combines the tourism of adventure within a real experience of how the former citizens of these lands live, which is now one of the less populated areas of Bolivia. R ight after the Chaco War, part of the Social mixed – Indians felt the need to reaffirm themselves whilst the Oligarchy period. In La Paz, Raul Salmon de la Barra invites to a change within the Theatre sector. Salmon forms a Social Theatre Group which presents a natural type of theatre in order to expose social claims that came from an isolated population which started to boom. The high class completely disliked these Theatre works which introduced characters as drunkards, homosexuals and prostitutes. From Salmon days up to date, the Bolivian Theatre was characterized by its lack of continuity as an artistic project since there was an absence of the payment to actors and directors as well due to dictatorships. History shows a gap between two ways to produce art, two ways which are included within two systems of content: worship and popular. Having said that there is a third system: brain storming messages. Worship derives from a high class concept of culture which refers to modern world and hegemonic, as well as fine arts practiced by trained elites to be decoded. Popular comes from knowledge recovery and traditional practices which then becomes associated to folklore, peoples. Brain Storming Messages refers to publicity, messages in mass media as radio and press, mainly to marketing consumed through TV and on Internet. Those three systems make us understand the Bolivia Theatre: a worship theatre, alternative, with no continuity and popular which defines itself as National Theatre. The National Theatre has taken the steps to become salmonischian since it favoured its sustenance and growth to be efficient since the audience is massive and faithful. Moreover, it is attached to the system of mass media messages since it is found to be part of TV channels and street advertisements, reaching a strong place at the urban cultural offer. The audience of this type of Theatre feels identified with the characters, the problem in which is based. They are characterized by a “Province innocence” adequate to people who are angels. This audience mirror itself on the scene: they laugh when the characters laugh and cry when the characters do show their discouragement and defeat, but feel encouraged when the characters who represents the hero beats the pain and malice from the daredevils. When the play ends, this audience feels the triumph which enhances them to continue living in the real world. Therefore, theatre becomes the mirror of the audience, but it does not dare to change situations which derive negative: discrimination, racism, delinquency, familiar breakdowns, addictions … The worship theatre criticise heavily the way in which the popular theatre touches the heart instead the mind since they are more reflexive but incapable of getting any mass ticketing except during Festivals. That’s how La Paz and Bolivian Theatre are divided in two aesthetic options totally in contradiction and excluding one each other which at the same time offer to their audience alternatives to feel and think.
