“Let Your
Light Shine”
WEEK BY WEEK THROUGH THE YEAR OF MERCY
First Sunday of Lent
(Readings: Deuteronomy 26:4-10 — Romans 10:8-13 — Luke 4:1-13)
On Ash Wednesday Pope Francis commissioned “Missionaries of Mercy,”
priest-confessors sent forth worldwide as “living signs of the Father’s
readiness to welcome those in search of [God’s] pardon.” In a way,
though, Pope Francis challenges all of us to become “missionaries of
mercy” (Misericordiae Vultus, 18) by living Lent in this Jubilee Year of Mercy “more
intensely as a privileged moment to celebrate and experience God’s mercy” (MV, 17).
Francis bids us make the prophet Micah’s words our own: “God . . . who does not persist in
anger forever, but delights rather in clemency. You will cast into the depths of the sea all our
sins” (Micah 7:18, 19). Having experienced God’s mercy ourselves in the unconditional
forgiveness of our sins, how eager we should be to invite others to know the peace of God’s
boundless mercy; perhaps even to experience, through our reaching out in gentle kindness
and compassionate care, something of God’s unconditional love for them.

The second reading from Saint Paul to the Romans is a
favorite of those involved in the ministry of evangeliza on. There are no “secret” disciples of the Lord.
Those who exercise good stewardship of their faith
realize that publicly iden fying themselves as
followers of Christ has a cleansing effect on their lives.
Openly confessing Christ makes them more conscious
of how they live their daily lives. Are we content to
priva ze our faith or are we good stewards of a faith
that we share, make public, and regularly iden fy as a
life in Christ?

RCIA 101
Information for the Parish Community and those looking to become Catholic
Book of the Elect: a book that serves as both a record of those elected each year and a symbol of God’s chosen
people.
Elect: name given to catechumens chosen by God and affirmed by the Church as ready to celebrate baptism,
confirmation, and Eucharist at the next Easter Vigil; catechumens who have gone through the Rite of
Election or Enrollment Rite on the first Sunday of Lent; the elect are those who are involved in immediate
preparation for initiation at the upcoming Easter Vigil.
Election: the formal liturgical act of choosing those who have been called by God to celebrate the initiation
sacraments; the election is proclaimed by the Bishop of a diocese.
Rite of Election: a liturgical rite that takes place at the beginning of Lent which formally names those who will be
baptized at the next Easter Vigil.
Sponsor: a companion that walks with a catechumen or candidate through the catechumenate process; ideally a
ssigned to a catechumen by the parish, in discussion with the catechumen or candidate.
Godparent: a person chosen by a catechumen to be a lifelong companion and mentor in the Christian faith;
Someone who makes a life-long commitment to be a spiritual mentor to a catechumen who decides to be
baptized; can be the same person as the sponsor.
The steps the catechumens take on their initiation journey are always public rituals. The first step was the Rite of
Acceptance. The second step is the Rite of Election. It is also called the Rite of Enrollment because the
catechumens write their names in the book that lists those who will be initiated.
The Rite of Sending and The Rite of Election normally takes place on the First Sunday of Lent, and Lent serves as a
time of spiritual preparation for the elect. In our diocese, the parish Rite of Sending is celebrated at one of the
regular Sunday Masses and the Rite of Election is celebrated that afternoon at the cathedral.
As the focal point of the Church’s concern for the catechumens, admission to election belongs to the bishop who is
usually its presiding celebrant. It is within the parish community, however, that the preliminary judgment is made
concerning the catechumens’ state of formation and progress. This rite offers that local community the opportunity
to express its approval of the catechumens and to send them forth to the celebration of election assured of the
parish’s care and support.
All are welcome to
come Adore HIM!

Online Resources — Check out Blessed Trinity’s website
blessedtrinityorlando.org for Lenten resources. Resources include
FORMED Catholic media on demand. This is a free subscription to
Blessed Trinity parishioners which gives you
access to movies, e-books, and audio that range in topics of
faith, Catholicism, and prayer. It can be accessed on your smartphone, tablet, or computer. Also, check out Bishop Robert Barron’s, host of Word on Fire, daily Lenten reflections. Many other resources are available to help you on your Lenten journey this year.
Stations of the Cross — Friday’s in Lent at 9:15am
The Stations of the Cross began as the practice of pious pilgrims to
Jerusalem who would retrace the final journey of Jesus Christ to
Calvary. Later, for the many who wanted to pass along the same
route, but could not make the trip to Jerusalem, a practice
developed that eventually took the form of the fourteen stations
currently found in almost every church.
Observing Lent — Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are
obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In
addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.
For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting
are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person
is permitted to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may also be taken, but not to equal a full
meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin
Catholic Church from age 14 onwards. Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional
disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in
a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter.
More information on Lent can be found at United States Council of Catholic Bishops
website at www.usccb.org

Reflexion….
Año Jubilar de la Misericordia
Primer Domingo de Cuaresma
Dt 26:4-10/Rom 10:8-13/Lc 4:1-13
*Galletas
*tarjetas de juego
*Palomitas de maíz
*Libros de cómicas
*Queso curls/Beef Jerky
