We rejoice this weekend at the graduation of Notre Dame School’s eighth-grade class, congratulating them and their families for the work and sacrifice that has brought them to this glad celebration. We especially thank our principal, Mr. Marlin Marcum, his teaching and administrative staff, and our school president, Mr. Mark Hoffman, for all their attention and care. May God bless them richly! On this Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ, Corpus Christi, we recall that at one time Christians perceived the Eucharist with such reverential awe that they would travel from altar to altar and simply gaze at the consecrated host, praying and asking favors of God but neglecting to receive or become the Body of Christ. Yet merely meditating on the Eucharist is not enough. As we see in today’s Gospel, Jesus intends that His disciples nourish the people, not just stand in awe of His miracles. The crowds gathered throughout the day, and Jesus healed “all those who were in need of healing.” The needy always gather in the Lord’s presence, longing to encounter God’s healing. That healing is found in the Word proclaimed and heard, but there is yet more nourishment to give and receive. The disciples are in awe of Jesus’ miracles, but that’s not enough for the Lord. As the hour grows late the disciples, feeling inadequate to feed so many, ask Jesus to dismiss the crowd so they can care for themselves. But Jesus, knowing the need, intends to meet that need – and so must the disciples – and pastors, and deacons, and each of the baptized! Jesus challenges, “Why do you not give them something to eat yourselves?” The disciples are not ready for this – they know the greatness of the people’s need and the scarcity of their resources to fulfill them. Every pastor, every deacon, every parent feels this scarcity – our own talents and gifts are insufficient to satisfy such great need! Yet Jesus’ question moves the disciples to count their blessings: five loaves and two fish. The Christian assembly always must take stock of both the need and the available gifts, recognizing that in remembrance of Jesus we must first listen to His Word and feel its healing power, then bring our gifts (bread, wine, time, talent, treasure) and place them at Jesus’ disposal so He can do what He did with the five loaves and two fish: bless them, break them, and give them to the disciples to distribute to the assembly and the world. Amazingly, there is abundance, enough to feed all with basketfuls left over. We cannot simply gaze on the Eucharistic Presence nor just possess Jesus; we must receive Him, then become His presence. May this great gift of the Eucharist, of Jesus Himself, be for us at Notre Dame Catholic Church and School the very source and summit of our spiritual life! In Jesus, Fr. Mike TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Melchizedek, the king of Salem and a priest of God Most High, brought out bread and wine and blessed Abram (Genesis 14:18-20). Psalm — You are a priest forever, in the line of Melchizedek (Psalm 110). Second Reading — Paul gives his description of the institution of the Eucharist (1 Corinthians 11:23-26). Gospel — Jesus speaks to the crowd about the kingdom of God and then feeds them with five loaves and two fish (Luke 9:11b-17). Come enjoy each other’s company and meet our newcomers and visitors. All are welcome! St. Therese of Lisieux is the patroness of missionaries although she never left her convent. She died at the early age of 24, yet accomplished great things through the power of prayer before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. The church made her the patroness of missionaries to emphasize this most important truth: One soul coming before the Blessed Sacrament can change the world! St. Therese said, “My mission is to make God loved.” May she intercede for us in spreading Eucharistic Adoration throughout the world! An adorer is needed for: Tuesday 4:00 p.m.—5:00 p.m. VINNIE ON BROADWAY’S NOTES FROM THE HEART The volunteers at St. Vincent de Paul on Broadway would like to share with you our work that your donations and thrift shop support make possible while keeping confidential the identities of our brothers and sisters in need. We are having a lot of travelers passing through. Though we like to show hospitality, we are cautious to not fund someone's Folk Festival experience. A woman of mature years was camping in the woods. She asked for a baby stroller to carry her stuff. We had one. The next day she came back with her son who had WALKED from Dallas to be with her. His employer had not paid him that month. They had a tent and a tarp. We gave them 4 nights in a campground. You know that week it rained and hailed? Yep! A couple of us went the next day to offer dry blankets. We couldn't find them. Not finding work in the area, a young man came to us for a store voucher for 2 suitcases in which to put his worldly possessions. We had two huge ones that airlines will no longer take. He went to wherever he was staying and packed up. He then came back loaded down asking for a bus ticket to Austin where hopefully work awaited. A store customer, overhearing this, offered to drive him to the bus station. We pray he is able to support himself. Reception received a good disinfecting recently. We helped a traveler pay his towing. He had been in a wreck and figured he could fix the car for less than his insurance deductible. He also mentioned he had HEPC. Fortunately, he did not appear to have open wounds. WISH LIST: We received 2000 lbs. of canned goods curtesy of the Postal Carrier's Food Drive. Want to help put it away? Remember the Mobile Food Pantry event June 14th at Schreiner. Need help boxing 10-11 and with loading into cars 11-1. Remember the sunscreen, hat, water, insect repellant, and a smile! BooksToBorrow from the Notre Dame Parish Library are available in the narthex of the church, near the bell tower door, currently featuring books newly added to our library. After a long delay, we are finally accessioning books from Rob Leahy’s library. A new parishioner, Richard Cort, tells us about Raids on the Unspeakable, by Thomas Merton. I had difficulty with this book, very possibly because I haven’t read enough Merton, and I’m not familiar enough with the rambling nature of his writing. But I found parts of the book almost incoherent, at least for me personally. But having said that, this book contains one of the most interesting – and thought-inspiring – chapters that I’ve come across in a long while. Maybe it even starts earlier on page 31, when Merton reveals the purpose of this book by saying: “The question of this book, the deeper question, is the very nature of reality itself.” And then on pages 45-49 – in the chapter entitled “A Devout Meditation in Memory of Adolf Eichmann” – he gets into a fascinating discussion about what exactly is reality, and what does the word “sanity” really mean. What happens when people, who function seemingly coherently within the strictures of their society, suddenly start committing barbaric acts such as those committed during World War II. Are these people sane? Or are they insane? Is there even a label for them that makes sense, or are we seeing something really evil manifesting itself before our eyes? And how can we apply what we learn from this discussion to our modern world, where some things that occur seem so extraordinarily removed from what we would call “correct behavior”, that we become speechless when trying to describe what we are seeing. Maybe Merton sums it up in this chapter when he says: “The whole concept of sanity in a society where spiritual values have lost their meaning, is itself meaningless.” And in doing that, Merton also gives the answer to the question of how we fix situations lik this. The answer is simply to worry less about labeling things sane or insane, and to ensure that our society reflects the timehonored spiritual values that have been characteristics of successful cultures over the millennia. And because of that one short chapter – and the fact that I’m still thinking about it months after I first read it – I’m very glad that you gave me this book to read.
