~ Pastor’s Column ~
The readings of the Thirteenth Sunday are
about God’s call and man’s commitment in
answer to that call. They ask for total
commitment in total freedom with the spirit of
patient love, saying an unconditional “Yes” to
Jesus and to the Christian life as a true
disciples of Christ.
The first reading describes how Elisha
committed himself whole-heartedly to answer
God’s call to be a prophet, in spite of his initial
hesitation when God called him through the
prophet Elijah.
The Responsorial Psalm, (Psalm 16),
offers us the refrain, “You are my inheritance,
O Lord". This Psalm has traditionally been
used to exemplify commitment to the ordained
ministry or to religious profession. But it
more accurately reflects the commitment
made by all Christians in their Baptism.
The second reading, taken from Paul's
letter to the Galatians, reinforces the
commitment message of the first reading and
the Responsorial Psalm; Paul warns that true
freedom is not meant to be a license for
self-indulgence, but as a way to show God and
human beings our commitment to God and to
His service.
The first part of the Gospel is Jesus’
teaching on Christian tolerance, given after
he had observed the angry response of two
of his apostles. James and John were angry
and asked Jesus to destroy the Samaritans
by bringing down fire from Heaven when they
refused to receive Jesus as a prophet and
give him hospitality as he travelled through
Samaria to Jerusalem.
In the second part of the Gospel, Luke
introduces three potential disciples who
offered lame reasons that made Jesus’ call to
ministry “impossible” for them to accept, after
Jesus had told them plainly what the
commitment required and the cost involved.
They were found unfit and unprepared to
follow Jesus as his disciples. We too, are
asked to follow Jesus, totally and immediately,
without any reservation both by giving priority
to him and to his cause and by surrendering
our lives to God in humble and dedicated
service to others.
As Christians, we should have the courage
of our convictions to honor our commitments:
marriage commitment and the priestly and
religious commitment and the Christian
commitment.

We appreciate your support on this annual fundraiser.
Thank-you.
The people of Africa are joyous and faith-filled,
but they also often face challenges due to
poverty, the high incidence of disease, food
shortages, and migration. The Church in Africa
journeys with people gifted with a vibrant
spirituality and is a source of hope and faith. The
Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa supports
pastoral projects that foster lasting peace and
reconciliation in a continent often marked by
division and tension. Pope Francis challenges
us: “Touched by Christ’s infinite mercy, may all
the faithful be signs of the reconciliation, justice
and peace that God wills for . . . all of Africa”
(April 16, 2015). Despite the vast number of
valuable natural resources, the Democratic
Republic of the Congo (DRC) is one of the
world’s poorest countries. Many do not have
access to clean drinking water and proper
sanitation, or to basic social services, such
as education or health care. The illiteracy rate
in the country is high and especially affects
women. In addition, many migrants and war
refugees immigrate to the DRC, straining
already sparse resources. Through a grant
from the Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa
(SFCA), the Naomi Center in Kisantu can
provide more vocational training and faith
formation for young migrants and illiterate
mothers. Kisantu has a high population of
migrants and war refugees from bordering
countries, and so the center works to create
opportunities for young mothers as well as
vulnerable migrants to increase literacy and
develop human values that offer hope for a
dignified life. With the additional funding from
SFCA, the Naomi Center will offer courses in
literacy, sewing, and life skills to bolster
self-esteem and job expertise for 140 women.
With your help, the Church in Africa can
continue to play an active role in the pastoral
care of migrants and refugees. Organizations
like the Naomi Center care for the needs of the
African people. Please give generously to the
Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa.
13er. Domingo del Tiempo
Ordinario
“Elías partió luego y encontró a Eliseo”
siguió a Elías.
samaritanos, quienes no quisieron recibirlo.
Antonio Astudillo.
La Parroquia San
Juan Evangelista/
Nuestra Señora del
Monte Carmelo
invitan a toda la
comunidad parroquial
a la venta de comida
Peruana que se
llevara a cabo el
Domingo 10 de Julio
de 11 a 3 de la tarde
en el auditorio.
